    DKC3 is one game that did "completionism" really well. DKC2 had its bonus levels you unlock with Kremkoins and an extra ending if you got them all, but the DK coins were just kind of there.
    In DKC3, every bonus item has a function and they are all linked together. You need all the bonus coins in the regular levels to unlock all the secret levels (and you get the last bonus coin from the final boss). You need all the DK coins (including those in the secret levels, and you get the last one from the final boss rematch in the secret world) to unlock the Gyrocopter. And you need the Gyrocopter (as well as every sidequest) to get all the banana birds, which is the path to the true ending.
    The only thing it was missing is a TRUE final boss. As it is, the ending kind of fell flat, since the last things you actually DO are just a bunch of searching around and Simon Says minigames.

      Agreed. It is honestly sad to see what DK 64 has become as a collectathon in comparison to DKC 3.
      Also, I don't care what anyone says, the DK coin being guarded by a Koin enemy in every level was a brilliant design choice. Maybe collecting a giant, suculent spinning DK coin in DKC 2 that made a neat little sound effect was more satisfying to some in DKC 2, but every time I found a Koin in DKC 3 I got excited, cause it was a quick and (usually) easy little puzzle that (usually) required you to use your knowledge of the stage's mechanics to figure out how to get it. That's game design done right in my book.

    DKC3 really is underrated. It’s just as strong as the other games, with its own unique strengths. For one, it’s the best utilization of the whole two-character gimmick, featuring all the character-specific barrels and team-up mechanics of the second game, but with the weight/movement differences of the first game. The game is also very inventive, often unfairly knocked for being “gimmicky”. The boss fights are also _easily_ the best and most inspired of the three games. And while the soundtrack by Evelin Fischer had the unfair task of following up DKC2’s absolutely god-tier score from David Wise (people who tout DKC2 as the best game in the series may not realize how much that soundtrack elevates the whole game), it’s really solid and features some wonderful tracks. Anyway, DKC3 is great. It deserves more roses.

    The think the myth about mice came from the the face elephants hate getting small things stuck to the bottom of their feet: They can actually detect elephants from miles way through vibrations in the ground and elephant low rumbles. So their feet can be sensitive to little things stuck between them. So if elephants see small things like mice go by they might visibly freeze up and back away from it or be mindful. They'd be just as likely to back up if you threw a bunch of marbles on the group near them.

    When Choc realizes there's one last ending for DKC 2 and DKC 3 when you get all the bonus coins and DKC 3 requires the DK coins as well. It's why the flags are how they are. They show a yellow flag if you got the DK coin and the regular flag isn't limpy if you have all that level's bonus coins.

      I can talk at length about why DKC3 is the weakest of the trilogy if it’s aim was to be a frenetic platformer. It works fine as a more slow paced and more deliberate platformer, but it’s not nearly as good at being a speed game. I also find that most of the levels rely on extraneous hazards instead of intrinsically difficult platforming. For example, a level where a giant saw blade is chasing you, or a level where a sniper is trying to kill you. Take them away, and you’re left with incredibly easy and boring levels. I personally enjoy when the difficulty comes from the platforming itself, such as the marsh levels in DKC2. No gimmicks, just difficult jumps.

    • @danielbueno8474
      @danielbueno8474 Před rokem +1

      @@kaidos123 I can't say I disagree with you. DKC 3 doesn't get nearly as much love as it deserves. I still like DKC 3 more than I do DKC 1, but that's just my personal preference. DKC 1 will always be more recognized because what it did was unprecedented, no other videogame has ever had graphics like that before, and the platforming was fun and fluid. But the levels get progressively worse in DKC 1. Few people even remember the final world, Chimps Caverns, because of how forgettable it was. In DKC 3 I find that to be the opposite. The levels get more and more fun as we approach the final worlds.
      But I still gotta say, DKC3 felt like a downgrade in a lot of aspects in comparison to DKC 1 and 2.
      First of all, and starting with my minor gripe with the game, the music. I know that was the first game that was composed by someone other than David Wyse, and I think that's one of the main problems. Not to say the soundtrack is inherently bad, because it has good tracks. The waterfall and snow themes are great, and I especially enjoy the water stage theme (much better than DKC 2's imo). But DKC 2's soundtrack was entirely made up of bangers. It's natural that DKC 3 felt kinda lacking in that department.
      Second, the aesthetic changes. I don't know whose idea it was to pick a baby theme to make one of the pillars of the game's aesthetic, but it definitely felt out of place with Dixie. She was already shown to have a very "90's rebel girl" personality in DKC 2, with her guitar playing and bubble gum bubble blowing, so it felt weird having her associated with an infant theme here. Maybe they did it mostly because of Kiddy, but it felt out of place with her.
      Speaking of him, I actually don't dislike Kiddy, I think he's a great character that gets way more hate than he deserves. It's actually nice seeing a baby being a useful powerhouse in a game for once. Plus, his weight being used by Dixie to break parts of the ground, being able to roll him like a barrel, as well as his water-skipping roll ability were all neat mechanics he had. My only problem with Kiddy is that him being paired with Dixie didn't exactly work as good as the first two games pairing did.
      In DKC 1, DK is stronger, and Diddy is more agile and faster. In DKC 2, Diddy was still the more agile and faster, while Dixie was just a bit slower, although faster than DK was, and she had her helicopter hair to make up for her "slowness". And even if she wasn't even that slow, she was still the "slow one" of the two. Now in DKC 3, suddenly she's the "fast and agile" of the group, even though she had no increase on her speed or agility in regards to DKC 2, but because her partner is even slower than her.
      And last, but not least, the elephant. Holy shit, I almost 30 years later and I'm still NOT over the fact they ditched Rambi for that stupid elephant. Yes, Ellie's mechanics are good... but Rambi's were better. This is one of those things that I highly disagree with you in that "they can't do that for 3 games in a row." Nah, screw that, I wanted to have Rambi again in DKC 3, dammit.
      Overall, I think DKC 3 was a great game, it's almost objectively wrong to say it is bad. But it is DEFINITELY the weaker of the 3 games, mainly because it had some flaws that the previous ones didn't have, and it has almost no good qualities that the previous games didn't also have. So to me, it _did_ end up being more of the same from the previous games... except some of the good parts from the previous games were missing.

    DKC 3 was always my second favorite after DKC 2. It has lots of interesting new game mechanics, the enemies are really quirky and fun looking, the bosses are WAY better than the 1st and 2nd, while the boat thing isn't really necessary, its sill fun rather than just pressing left and right on the D pad. The soundtrack is arguably the worst, but still really good. Would have liked to see Diddy back, he was my favorite, Kiddy is... meh basically a smaller Donkey. On second thought could have had Donkey and Dixie rescue Diddy this time or something. Nostalgia overload, I still have my old SNES with the cartriges, it still works I boot it up every now and again just to see. At one time i did own Clay Fighters but dont know where it is anymore, sad times

    Donkey Kong County 3 is an amazing platformer, that I suspect gets too much bad rap because of aesthetic distaste for Kiddy Kong and for the summer camp feel of the game (in contrast to the previous' games "darker" setting). Also, Dixie Kong wasn't in the original game, so it may have progressed too far from what people knew, which could also create a negative impression.

    • @paulgilbert5278
      @paulgilbert5278 Před 2 lety +5

      Uh.. DKC3 retains the dark feel from the first two, And it outshines DKC1 in that regard. The soundtrack is proof. Especially the over world theme

      @gregm4813 Před 2 lety

      @@paulgilbert5278 With DKC1, that's fair, and a total blunder on my part. DKC1 isn't very dark. DKC2, though, is definitely "darker" in aesthetic. Two monkeys, without the brute strength of Donkey Kong (can't beat big, tough dudes without team attacks), trying to find the kidnapped DK on the enemy's island, complete with the DKC2 soundtrack playing.

    For me at least, the big problem with this game was the overemphasis on gimmicks. Levels like Murky Mill, Fish Food Frenzy and especially Poisonous Pipeline try to make up for mediocre level design by forcing a bad gimmick into them. It makes these levels a huge chore to play through.
    The first two games had levels like this such as Tanked Up Trouble, but they weren't as numerous as in DKC3.

    • @gregm4813
      @gregm4813 Před 2 lety +2

      Eh, playing devil's advocate, I'd argue that's a strength of DKC3, and DKC1's more "general platforming" is a weakness. Said gimmicks give character and unique diversity to DKC3 levels, while DKC1 levels are more generic same-ish.
      (Note: Not intending to judge your position here, as "generally good platformer" ain't bad at all. Simply putting forth some basic reasons that "lots of gimmicks" ain't necessarily bad either)

    Honestly DKC3 has always been my favorite of the trilogy. I don't think anyone could say with a straight face that DKC2 isn't the best designed at this point and DKC3 does have some issues...but something about DKC3 is just really fun and charming to me. I like Eveline Fischer/Novakovic's weird soundtrack for this game, it feels distinct from David Wise's output while still feeling like it fits the series. The level design can be over-reliant on gimmicks, sure, but I think the bonuses in this game are probably the best in the series. The aesthetics are also awesome in my opinion, although that's something you could say about all the games. I do understand where a lot of the criticisms come from, but I still personally really love it and I'm glad you grew to like it too Choctopus. I agree that its underrated.
    Just to go into full on rant mode here...as much as I love David's music, it really annoys me how people constantly put down Eveline's music (of course its fine to just not like it but I've seen so much bashing on DKC3's OST). Not to mention, those people don't even acknowledge her for the great music in DKC1 she helped with...Voices of the Temple, Forest Frenzy, Treetop Rock, and Simian Segue are all really good tracks that she either composed herself or helped make.
