Get on the bus with NFL players Will Compton & Taylor Lewan! The Boys are letting you in on their hilarious, high-energy (and often heartfelt) conversations. Topics range from exclusive stories to active player perspectives to out-of-left-field hot takes on things you and your friends only discuss behind closed doors. Sometimes they chat with a guest, sometimes it's just the two of them, but it's always a good time when you're Bussin' With The Boys.
And yes, this is the podcast where Mike Vrabel said he'd cut his piece off for a Super Bowl.

I mean for JJ the money wasn’t acc an issue bc he’s made way more playing ball, so him genuinely wanting ownership ahead of everything else isn’t crazy whatsoever
He’s gonna make way more with the pod. Who’s got a better basketball show than JJ RN he’s like basketball rogan
@@nicholaspu Draymond
@@nicholaspu yh he will make more but i don't think the money was the main driver of his decision for wanting IP, still a major contributor to his decision but him wanting creative control was the main thing
Rogan is a conspiracy nut
Yeah JJ’s podcast is one of the best out there.
I've been moving from yahoo to old man just to keep up with jj and his work. His interviews are great
Yahoo too old man?
What JJ describes at the end is exactly what happened to me when I watched his Marcus Smart and PJ Tucker interviews. It wasn't as if I disliked these guys before, just had never seen them in a long-form interview. Came away really liking both.
Reading the comments:
I don't get the Bill Simmons hate. He still speaks highly of JJ and says that its a really good Podcast.
JJ will be successful, as will Bill.
Eventually look for them to do a Home and Home like Simmons does with Zach Lowe.
Bill seems to be a great collaborator and he is very good at recognizing talent and giving it space to grow. I get wanting to own your own gig but I don't see how BS did anything wrong.
Bill is in it for Bill. As you would expect him to be and as he probably should.
Smart move. He’s the best out there and only getting better.
JJ already has his audience: czcams.com/video/6tPe3rf4Pvg/video.html
Owning your work is so important for any creator in an media facet because not only do you benefit from your products directly but you can also leverage your audience later on
Hey what’s up Ruben
The problem isn't JJ or Bill Simmons, the problem is it sets a precedent that all talent can own their socials and their names. If you give up the IP, you basically only exist to grow giant self-owned brands that can then go independent without you after they reach a certain point.
The Ringer and Barstool have a lot of top podcasts in different fields, if they say they own the IP, we just split profits, you do everything you can to make these people as successful as possible. Free promotion on all your other shows, pay them a salary, give them a producer, the best equipment, and a talent booker, you're setting them up for success, you're planting the seeds. And as they grow and make their own voice and fan base off your foundation you built for them, it turns into this weird give and take of well what can you do for me now?
Should media companies just be talent incubators where they invest all this money into you just so you can leave and become independent off the foundation they gave you? Or should they be able to profit off the platform and foundation they gave the talent. That's the weird world we're in now where talent can thrive on their own, be their own talent bookers, have their own ad sales teams, and do it all on their own. But most people (unlike JJ) can't start that way. They need the time to build their voice and do so in an environment that let's them build safely.
That seems like the unique thing with podcasts....uncensored unique views on pretty much any topic or industry.....of course the content and ownership is a big deal, but quality control allows for unfiltered conversation. It will evolve to have big players but it's an open field of indies vying for market space.
@@jman1562001 Totally, but think of the head start you get as a podcast when you have all the best gear and marketing on episode 1 versus starting something completely new on your own in your spare time.
You can be one of the best, but you don't start out that way. You have to earn it and it's a lot easier to do that when you have the full force of a media company behind you.
@@djrt8179 well yes bigger platforms equal more exposure but at what cost. I think given the plethora amount of podcasts out there, most would rather own their IP out right and negotiate deals when they reach a critical mass or audience. It's not hard to get tons of subscribers if you have compelling content and engaged subscribers
bro went in like it’s my class discussion post lmaooo good ish
Haven't I seen you in the comments of some Celtic's highlights?
Bill?
The🧃at the end…I’ve had that convo with a lot of people. JJ brings new light to player perspectives.
JJ is a real student of the game and knows the history of the game. A lot of ex players like Stephen Jack just be talking out they ass
Everyone says they want to own their own IP, but unless THEY can generate the following themselves then the company they are associated with from a brand perspective usually drives the metrics. Not everyone is a call her daddy or a Bill Simmons podcast. It took Bill 15 yrs before he owned his podcast. It took, Cowherd over 20 yrs to own his.
Podcasts weren't big 15 to 20 years ago. The Ricky Gervais one was the first big one but that was in the UK late 2000s and it was comedy. Sports podcasts started being relevant and financially lucrative recently which is why the top guys are making that pivot.
welp, JJ has now proven his audience will follow him. And like he said, he gave the Ringer its best performing podcasts.
I’ve always been interested in this glad the boys asked. 1:48 they gave his pod to the mismatch 😂
Let's go!
Owning your IP is a long term play. When you've made $115Mill in your career (on court), you can afford to delay up front money and hold on to your IP for control/licensing rights etc.
I always think players should do this--but I understand why a company like The Ringer wouldn't let you own your IP.
What's in it for them?
These companies should Identify talent and partner with them long term (i.e. First 2 years WE own the IP. Then we give up the IP but you cut us in on earnings for the next 2 years, then we renegotiate to where you own everything and we get a % of some aspect we add value in).
Don't make the relationship adversarial--Find ways to be better partners if possible, and get money together.
I read somewhere that Barstool interestingly enough allowed Call Her Daddy to walk to Spotify, and they still get a piece of some of the future earnings (Merch I believe). It's a way to create Win/Win scenarios for everyone.
“I had to restart 3X” that’s inspiring
Technically he started once and restarted twice.
JJ Redick is Killin it right now. His basketball knowledge/IQ is an art in the way he can break the game down.
JJ is the best in the bizz. I am really happy he started loading to youtube so I can catch his podcast.
I was wondering why his sub count was not as high as I thought it should be. Makes sense
Funny what he said at the end about people hating Pat Beverly until they heard him on the podcast. I thought the same way about JJ until I heard his first podcast. never judge a book by its cover
The Pat Beverly thing is so true.
Whats that
@@tfizzle56 You have to watch the end of this clip
@@Marz2727 The clip is almost 4 minutes! I have to watch four minutes?!
@@MrOctober44 exactly timestamp it my guy
@@yomoseo y’all can’t watch the whole clip you clicked on? Hell nah lmao
Draymond boutta go through the same situation
I need a raw and uncut Pat Bev podcast
Jeeez can they let JJ talk..damn man
Bill was being business man and JJ was being a business man. I don’t get the hate. It’s business not personal.
Like Draymond Green on The Volume Network
need more than BBALL.
As a follower, I don’t think he had to regain many subscribers. Because most already just re-followed due to the quality of content.
JJ is making the right moves. The podcast business took a new turn after the Joe Rogan deal and I mean it is never good for the authentic content if some people come in and start affecting what is talked about. OK Joe got 100mill "fuck you money" and that is where you make the deal anyway but when You have options then do it like JJ and for us listeners it is the best.
It’s like renting vs owning a home. All the equity you would realize as an owner your giving to your “Sponsor.” If you want to sell your Business in the future you gotta control the IP hate Duke Love JJ Sixer fan here for past 73 years.
Losing subscribers sounds scary but they literally just subscribe to the new one
jj doesn't need them to have a podcast lmfao
I like pat bev because of the old man and the 3
JJ knows he has a chance to build an IP with a lot of worth when more podcasts get offers. It would be silly to let himself not own his own show
JJ Redick and Bill Simmons gotta fight. No choice
Anyone who “hates” a basketball player, and then completely changes their perspective based on an interview, built their foundation on a house of cards to begin with. I’m not blowing on the wind with them while they figure out what I already know.
If you told me in 2004 that JJ f@#$in Redick would be one of my favorite dudes one day, I'd assume I must've had a head injury.
Shocks me Draymond joined the volume and not his own thing
I like Pat Bev now
between JJ & nba desktop, Bill has fudged himself out of the best online nba content.. the dewd is not shrewd
Bill used to be the best NBA voice online in the 2000's. There was nothing better than reading his weekly columns and running diaries. Now I can't even find his podcast. It's baffling that he stopped doing what he did best -- writing.
@@thsu8 he does an editorial type thing every once in a while on his podcast & they are fantastic, but far & few between. i agree he is a fantastic writer. he seems like a bit of a hot head though when it comes to business decisions & the fact that he missed on nba desktop & JJ's podcast is pretty bad & if i were him, would have me losing sleep
@@becameabird Business is exactly that. Business. I am sure Bill realized JJ was going to be successful but it is a contract negotiation. My guess is that no one on The Ringer platform owns their show.
Bill Simmons has always had an eye for talent. It's talent retention that seems to give him trouble.
FBS
Well DUHHH.. he’s gonna continue to grow the 342 brand an he will as big as The Ringer eventually.. so why would he not want ownership? This is literally common sense in this generation; if you start a brand, build a subscriber base, an ppl like you.. KEEP IT THAT WAY.. look at Snapchat lol. This was an easy decision imo.
Nah I still hate Pat Bev
Same. It was a good interview but still don't like him.
Everyone does. He's a joke.
I think bill got jealous coz JJ was doing so well so quickly & or tried to make money from him being the podcast host but couldn’t do it since JJ wanted full autonomy
It's not that, is if he allows it for JJ other people at The Ringer will ask for the same thing. The relationship is symbiotic. Bill obviously needs to retain talent and if people have the rights to their IP and can basically leave and take everything with them then that is what everyone would do when they don't need the support system of The Ringer anymore. It really is just business, and JJ seems to understand that well.
@@tchombre1992 it seems like people don't understand how business works. A lot of businesses are like this not just those in podcast. A company provides you a platform, they pay you income, they provide support, if you try to leave then they'll often keep the rights of what you created. That's not to say companies don't occasionally allow you to keep your rights but this is a normal business practice.
Bill simmons think he sneaky
Utah Jazz da best
Owning the IP only matters when your podcast is making real money. JJ would’ve made more money with the Ringer. Anybody who says it’s not a money issue is LYING.
Having creative control and freedom for after a contract is up is a huge deal
Keep talking like you know other people's lives lmao
This is only true if you aren’t hard working, business savvy, and in the know and or don’t have the people to run it. If you are competent you 100% should own it. If not than leave it in better hands.
You think JJ needs more money? Going independent can work like McAfee and JJ’s CZcams only continues to grow
JJ has made millions already from his playing career. Having creative control is far more important which is evident by the Ringer offering more guaranteed money
I used to dislike Pat Beverly.
Now I hate him
Nope---still hate pat bev after that episode lol
First
i still hate beverly
I still don’t like Pat Bev
Bill sucks anyways, glad you are owning your own thing
Meh, still hate Pat. Dude is a clown.
He should be out of the league for intentionally injuring players the way he has.
Should have taken the Ringer job. Wouldn’t have needed to supplement your income by joining ESPN or having “hot take debates” with SAS and Perkins.
Instead you could go on serious basketball shows, have serious debates, AND promote your podcast, none of which ESPN will allow.
That ESPN job is going to steal your soul.
Lmao what a braindead take. The Ringer had been as hot takey as ESPN for a while now
LMAO. JJ has PLENTY of money.
JJ appearing on ESPN is promotion enough. He shows us, a clip goes viral, people then search him on CZcams, and the algorithm leads you to his podcast.
The Internet does half the promotion for you.
I'm pretty sure JJ doesn't need to supplement his income. He just enjoys being on ESPN and he is good at it
This a Bill Simmons burner account?
