John Myung is an amazing player.
I’ve heard this song a hundred times or more on the disc and this is truly the FIRST time I’ve clearly heard the bass line. And seeing the tabs to this is just mind blowing. Outstanding playing and thank you for this!
Its sad. I just got into playing Bass and only now i notice parts in metal songs and recognize that it is actually the bass playing. Before i didnt even think about bass.
I first came across this song on rockband 2, could barely manage to play it on there. But the fact that you can play it on an actual bass to perfection deserves incredible recognition
Finally someone who nails the tuning of the bass! The best cover I’ve seen. On the main riff, Myung doesn’t play the open C string and using 1 string, but a string lower, using 2 strings, further up the neck for darker tone and dynamics. Only the intro use the open C. Still perfect playing and awesome cover.
Nope. Look up on youtube "Dream Theather Panic Attack Live Wacken 2015 HD" and you can clearly see Myung play the main riff on the open C string only, just after the intro --- and again later on, several times, like after "...overwhelmed by this complex delirium"...

One of the more accurate tabs I’ve seen. Note wise you’re nails. There are a few areas where Myung plays a different octave of what you’re doing but note wise it correct. If you find the isolated bass track you’ll hear some difference but if you don’t have that track it’s really easy to hear it just as this. Really nice work overall. Been working on this myself for a few days now.

I literally just started playing bass. Playing guitar for years but with a pick except on my nylon acoustics. I think I’ll work on this one for some serious finger exercises. When I learn this, it will really be a great first bass song to brag about. Much better than my first guitar song “Breaking the law”. 😂

@@connorgamer96 don’t use a pick because you can’t use fingers, use a pick because you like the technique better. Also learning the 3 fingers technique is easier than either method

In terms of songs, this is one of their best records. It has great songs, awesome melodies and stellar musicianship. But that production is...dismal. I don't know quite what the politburo of Petrucci and Portnoy were thinking, but they shrouded that disc in a HORRIBLE recording and mix; the instruments were stifled. One record that has NOT aged well at all. Regardless, Jonah, your bass playing is spot-on. Hearing this makes me wish Myung was louder in the original mix. Props for nailing it.
thanks for the kind words! I can't say I've ever had as much of a critical ear for production. I love the songwriting and playing on Octavarium, but I've never paid too much attention to the production.

Fantastic cover buddy! What tuning is this though? I think John Myung plays in standard but with his B tuned down to Bb and his D tuned down to C. But it looks like you're in A standard? I could be wrong.
Thanks! Yeah, I'm not 100% sure what tuning Myung plays in, but I did this a whole step down (so ADGCF). Pretty sure that's what you mean by A standard right?
I’ve seen a lot of rig rundowns for Myung and I’ve never heard them talk about a bass tuned with the Bb and C but I’ve always heard about the whole step down A standard bass. I’ve learned this in A standard myself and it lays very well as he’s demonstrating. I’ve seen the printed sheet music show the odd Bb tuning and I think that’s where alot of this question started. But I don’t think it’s accurate. I never see anyone actually play it like that.
@@SHSULeadTrumpet Yeah I see a lot of strange transcriptions for Myung tunings and I've never been sure as to why. For example a lot of Dream Theater's C-Standard stuff often involves Myung just tuning his B up to C and leaving the rest of the bass in standard, or at least that's what I see on a lot of tabs. I wonder if this is just a matter of tab writers wanting to tune as few strings as possible away from standard. That being said, the Bb and C strings on panic attack are a story I hear thrown around quite a bit, so I'm curious to see where it originated from.
I would love to attempt this but I dont want to tune my bass like that, I fear it might affect the calibration

Is there any way to play this on a 4 string or does it have to be a 5 string
I'm sure it's possible to play on a 4 string but you'd have to move some parts up an octave
