That bass looks like a multipurpose, omnidirectional weapon.
Correct
Omnidirectional? But point only in one direction...
@@ktulu2178 that's why you spin it, man. Shut up.
Please tell me what bass this is so I can find it and buy it.
I can't unsee it now
Two bass intros that marked the history of music forever
For Whom The Bell Tolls
Dig
Several are wrong. Especially the tool songs.
BRR DENG
while not disagreeing I do challenge you to a dual (not duel < dual - trying to be punny) Wrathchild and Peace Sells. The first bass line that went through my head was peace sells when reading the name of the video - when watching and it played my brain was satisfied but was wondering where Maiden was. Didn't like the first Maiden choice and wrathchild stared playing in my head and then not much later on my screen. Two of my all time faves - but with Mudvayne being my favorite band of all time hard to go against Dig.
You forgot disgore deranged epidemic

There is something so soothing about melodic highs on a bass with a warm tone. Really enjoyed this video and the variety you selected
I enjoy a warmer tone
Dark Tranquillity is such an underappreciated band. Nice to see Lethe made the list!
Not listened to them for a while actually but definitely one of my favourite bands, along with Arch Enemy and Opeth they got me into melodic death metal. The Gallery was a fantastic album and Lethe one of my favourite songs from it. Theres an old live video of them (can watch on CZcams) where they play it with so much emotion.
A lot of Opeth songs have some awesome basslines too - it may not be a metal album but Damnation sounds great and the bass tone is lovely. Just feels so good when it kicks in on Hope Leaves.
I'm a long-time drummer and been trying to learn guitar for the last year or so but I have absolutely no experience with bass. But watching guys like Dann, Davie504 and Charles Berthoud does inspire me to give it a go sometime. Slap bass looks really hard though!
@@lukebarkermusic Opeth aren't, and never have been, a melodic death metal band. I hate this revisionist history that modern fans keep on applying to Opeth's older music, and it needs to stop.
Having melody in your death metal doesn't automatically make you a melodeath band. They were a progressive death metal band, even on the fringes of prog black metal on their first 2 albums, before just becoming a prog rock band.
The melody in melodic death metal strictly comes from NWOBHM, whereas Opeth's melody came from a whole host of different genres and influences, but largely from prog rock. There's a significant difference between Opeth's music and that of Dark Tranquility, At the Gates, Carcass, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth, or The Black Dahlia Murder, who all have fairly distinct sounds, but their melody all comes from one place.
â@@metalswifty23 Yes looking back at my comment I would agree, Opeth are a prog metal or a prog rock band. Not intentionally trying to be 'revisionist' though, maybe some people are, but it was just easier to say melodeath to group them in with other bands that got me into heavier forms of metal but still had an 'accessible' melody to their music.
I'm guessing the melody you refer to from the NWOBHM is the Aeolian mode/natural minor. Although some bands take it darker with the harmonic minor - Punish my Heaven by Dark Tranquility is one of my favourites.
Opeth have so many different inspirations for melodies and rhythms, many that I would have no reference for. Especially their latest prog rock stuff as I haven't listened to much of the classic prog rock that seems to be one of Mikael's current inspirations. The lead melody at the start of Serenity Painted Death always sounded very exotic and unusual - in a nice way - to me, like it had the uplifting sound of a major scale but the mysteriousness of a minor scale. When I started getting into guitar I looked up the tab and realised its actually a major lick played into a minor lick in the same position - making an interesting group of 3 chromatic notes in the overall lead line. And that's just one little melody in one of their many songs, some of which are very long!
though itâs not metal, but hysteria from muse has one of the best intros ever i guess...
One of the funnest riffs to play imo
It isn't that wonderful at all. Muse is annoying.

Muse sucks
Ok, I got it, TOOL makes best bass intros
Itâs true ..
Too bad everything else they do is shit.
@@therusstren ur opinion
Tool isn't metal.

This needs a part 2.
Anthrax - Got The Time
Black Sabbath - NIB
Infectious Grooves - Punk it Up
Iron Maiden - The Trooper
Iron Maiden - Stranger in a Strange Land
Ozzy - No More Tears
Ozzy & Primus - NIB
Pantera - The Art of Shredding
Primus - My Name is Mud
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Around the World
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Higher Ground
Ronnie James Dio - Welcome to My Nightmare
Ted Nugent - Little Miss Dangerous
Wow thanks for suggesting man đ€
Yeah NIB, specifically the Les Claypool version (Track 7 from the Nativity In Black 2 tribute album) which has been apparently scrubbed from CZcams so hard I feel gaslighted.
Dragonfly - Angeles con una sola ala
Both the Intro and the pre-chorus bridge are bass masterpieces.
I love the Primus version of NIB so much. Any time i play that song, i always end up going in that direction with it. I can't help it.
Dio welcome to my nightmare????
Being an old 80âs metal head I would have been sorely disappointed if Pease Sells wasnât in there. Well done. I never realized how many songs had bass intros. I bet you would slay Metallicaâs Anesthesia Pulling Teeth
Yep Peace Sells was the one I was waiting for.
First bassline I learned was the peace Sells intro
It's not easy but I had been a rythm guitarist for a few years before then(its still my primary instrument)
Tool have so many great bass lines. JC is genius
Well Paul wrote Sober.

I'm a guitarist but I absolutely love how heavy the bass sounds.
Death Lack of Comprehension is one song that definitely could be on this list.
I was looking for that too.
I second that!
Love that Lethe was immediately followed by My Friend of Misery, simply because DT covered that song on the deluxe edition of The Gallery.
I loved that cover.
@@flightofthebumblebee9529 It's a brilliant cover
I thought it was "God that Failed". Definitely knew it was a song from Black Album.
3:21 this actually made me want to get a 6 string. It sounds so fucking nice and has a melody I absolutely adore and love.

Nice! Lots of Tool love, Justin's riffs are some of my faves of all time to play. Great playing as always man, beautiful bass and nice Darkglass shirt!
That is the bass tone I've been searching for.
Thank you for including Wrathchild here!! I've always loved that bass intro ever since I got the album back in the day...

Damn! I was so stoked to see Tool made the list five times! My three favorite songs...Forty Six & 2, Schism and Sober were all there. I will say Judith by Perfect Circle deserves to be on the list too. Thank you for sharing. Awesome skills!đč
Truly inspiring. This is prof that bass does not have to be dull. I love how metal breaks rules and limits of what and how music is supposed to be and sound.
Brutal!
Such a great bass, killer
Excellent choices dude, looking forward to part 2đ€đ»

I know it's a simpler one to play but I was stoked to see you include My Friend of Misery. Love that one deep down.

Hell ya wrath child!!! Under rated for how great of a bass intro đ€đŸ
Anything Steve Harris does really, and They just released new CD hehe "UP The IRONS"
How has Souls of Black been missed on this? That's iconic as heck. Also, No More Tears by Ozzy is another great one
And don't forget about Mr. Jack by SOAD
I came here to say that.. Souls of Black is top 5
Thank you! That was the first song that came to my mind when I saw the title and was disappointed to see it wasn't included.
let's hear it for Greg Christian, THE Soul of Black!
Not just that, but also Trial By Fire!
Enjoyed every seconds of it. Awesome playing man!
While it isnât metal or an opening You gotta admit Roundabout has one of the best baselines
I admit nothing
That's great fun to play, I sometimes use it as an exercise when I haven't played for a while
I can't fking play it with a pick, I'm left handed but play right, so my arm is weak af
@@nanomachines9872 I hope that my following comment comes across in the helpful and supportive way I'm intending it to. All too often, the written word lacks vocal inflections and so on and sometimes the best will in the world can be misread especially if two people aren't speaking their first languages. Please, I mean to be only supportive as a fellow player here.
I suffered pretty severe spinal cord injuries in my upper and lower back, the upper being more of a problem to my playing than the lower. I used to play mainly fingerstyle but when I was injured I wasn't able to use my ring and little fingers in my right hand, my little finger was severely weakened/nearly unusable in the left and I was getting severe neuro pain in both hands.
Once I had corrective surgery I started to slowly practice with a pick on a guitar first. Just alternate picking exercises building up strength and agility again and then I started back on bass.
Fingerstyle with all 4 fingers was unfortunately a bit too far due to the nerve damage but my first 2 fingers work and my ring finger is mostly there after months of practice. Same with the left hand. I still get pain and I set up my basses very low but I can play again. My friend, I'm telling you that if you want something really so much, I mean that burning obsession sort of want where whenever you have a moment free, you grab an instrument and practice, the ability will come and if you have a problem that stops you, you (we) have the mind to develop a way to overcome this hurdle. Music needs us. We all have a part to play in this story my friend and one thing that has always been my drive as a musician and has been my guide is "inspiration".
We all look for inspiration. It's in our blood, our DNA, our souls as musicians as artists. Equally, when we see another musician that we can help, we must inspire them and I hope that by me telling you about what I've done it inspires you.
As I said initially, my intention is to help and what I aim to avoid is what too often happens that these things end up as a pissing contest as to who had the worst/best story. I mean nothing of the sort. I only want good to come of what happened to me, please, go get your bass or guitar right now and just start practicing. Listen closely, break it down and improve. Be inspired, my friend and take care.
@@restojon1 this has got to be the longest reply I have ever had(not that I'm complaining) but still, thank you for the inspiration, although I can't reply to something as long as that

@@yagoovirus2751 bass is a guitar lol. Also hey! Fellow Hololive watcher!
Love that you put some Symphony X on your list... They seem to usually go unnoticed.
Good stuff! Wasn't aware of the Dark Tranquility tune so thank you for that.
Early Dark Tranquillity has some of the best bass work in metal! They treat it more like a melodic instrument along with the guitars than just a rhythm instrument to add low end. A great example would be Alone, which essentially has 3 lead guitars, but one of them is the bass.
DT is my favorite band of all time, glad to see that masterpiece make the cut :)
Great selection and stunningly played, really makes me want to pick up my bass again!
My man! You have some awesome tones coming out of that bass! Well done, all around.
Symphony X absolutely deserves to be up there. Some of the other choices are questionable but mad respect for highlighting one of the most under-rated bands
And there were TWO well-deserved SyX tracks. First band I ever saw live.
I was surprised to see Soen here. Underrated band!
Savia is a marvelous song! â€ïž
I gotta say, your videos stand out compared to others because your sound quality is absolutely fuckin BRUTAL. I love how raw it sounds
Loved to see a few Tool songs here. Loved the bass, the rest of the songs, the playing and the video itself. Great work!
Great video !!! That 6 string, INSANE !!! Part 2 will cover some Claypool, DiGiorgio, Lee & Sheehan....Maybe some Klaus Flouride's DK bass lines just for fun !!!
Nailed it. Surprised you didn't use pick on Peace Sells. Still sounded awesome. Love the Symphony X stuff. I do love Running With The Devil by VH - I know it's beyond simple, but so iconic. đ€đœ
Thanks a lot! Yes I tried also with pick, but I'm more familiar with finger picking đ€đ

Awseome job man, love how Symphony X riffs were like "I'm not repeating that riff" đ Also dig the tone, right up my alley
It may be super underrated as a deep track but the bass intro riff to "I can't hide" by pantera is awesome!

These bass intros are iconic because it was way back in time.
These days anyone can write better, technical intro bass riffs yet they won't hold much value or place because nowadays everyone can do that.

There's so many good bass intros in metal, it's hard to narrow it down to an 8 minute selection. I would like to add to the list: S.O.D. - "Milk" Overkill - "Left Hand Man", "Blown Away", "Solitude" Black Sabbath - "N.I.B" Iron Maiden - "Running Free" Anthrax - "Got The Time" Motorhead - "Overkill", "Ace Of Spades" Ozzy - "No More Tears" ManOwaR - "Mountains"
Helloween - i live for your pain or Born on judgement day
Evergrey - Departure
Diablo Swing Orchestra - Balroog boogie
Breaking benjamin - You fight me or No games
Sonata Arctica - The vice
Gamma Ray - Condemned to Hell
Dream theater - SN2 or Panic attack
