  • Having my last lunch in Cameron Highlands with a very nice gentleman who accommodated me so nicely and proposed the best food for me to try. This is the end of the Malaysia 1.0 series, but there are will be another series - Malaysia 2.0 very soon! My visa allowed me to stay only 30 days in the country.

Davud I'm pretty sure I wrote what I'm about to say in another video but since you said "it's very hard to know who is a Malaysian...... Let me say in case you haven't noticed during your travels, Malaysia is a multicultural country. There is a mix of ethnicities that have been in Malaysia for generations. They look Chinese, Indian (both north and south) etc and they are as Malaysian as the Malays are. Malays are not the ONLY Malaysians. I hope that helps and that you have a bit more clarity. Also remember just because someone looks like they are from a particular ethnicity does not mean they have been to the country of that ethnicity. For example, plenty of Malaysians whose forefathers came from India may have never been to India.

Davud originally wanted to eat the iconic Malay food Nasi Lemak but was not available so he asked what food Malaysians eat from that shop so he was offered banana leaf curry rice. Foreigners always confuse when they talk about Malaysian food. Malaysian is a nationality. What they should say is Malay food, Chinese food or Indian food...going by race to be specific.

Try the Singh Capati - Sikh/Punjab food just behind the planters hotel up the slope. Their masala tea is good and meal is awesome. Nothing is precook and all cook fresh so slightly a little bit of waiting but taste good!! Also along this main street is a restaurant call Kougen, run by only one chef, he cooked Asian fusion stuff and u could uniquely watch him cooking your meal by the side.

The green veggie is spinach. Eating on the banana leaf is an Indian custom. What you had was actually of Indian origin. You need to try malay food mainly dishes like grilled fish, squid, prawns, beef, lamb or chicken eaten with a hot sour sauce, beef rendang, asam pedas, masak lemak cili padi, ulam(fresh herbs eaten with sambal belacan/sauce made with chilli, shrimp paste, lime juice etc. Other dishes are ayam masak merah, kerabu, soups made with short-ribs, or bones from the legs of cows etc.

Davud, you keep asking for Malaysian food. There is no such thing as Malaysian food since food sold or served here are based on their ethnicity. Hence, you should ask for either Malay, Chinese, Indian, Punjabi, Thai, Kadazan etc food. The meal you had on banana leaf here is indian food. I saw you ate chinese and indian food already. Next time please ask for Malay food. They will serve you Ikan bakar, ayam masak lemak, asam pedas, daging rendang, sup ekor, sayur ulam etc. Once you have eaten all three ethnic food, you can claim to have eaten Malaysian food.

Even with food, the lines are blurred. Even though some food here originate from India, Thailand, Indonesia etc, Malaysians have added our own take to it, so it's hard to differentiate between local or "foreign", just like the people. And we may even call the food different names, so some of the terms you use might not apply here. Most Malaysians are able to recognise locals from the foreigners, but as you say, it's always safe to ask.
Note: All races who live here are Malaysians, but not all Malaysians are Malays. Malay is an ethnicity. I don't think you've made that mistake before, but many other CZcamsrs have, so I'm mentioning it here for all 😉

a meal for 17.5 ringgit (about 3.5 USD) for one person maybe a bargain for you. But for most Malaysian family with a working father, this may be over the daily budget.
A meal for a family of say 4 would ideally be around 24 ringgit ie a budget of 6 ringgit per person. Of course this doesn't apply to the more affluent richer family. The rich lead a different life as always.
    Cheers mate.
