1. France Gall
2. Michel Berger
3. Johnny Hallyday (close 2nd!!)
Reacting to a series of interpretations of the same song is a great concept. I quite like it :)
Don’t listen to haters Dereck! I’m French and I enjoy a lot the way you make me rediscover french music hits. It’s almost like I’m listening them for the first time through your ears and reactions.
Keep doing because you’re doing it well.
Exactly! Dereck is not only very technically accurate in his comments, but he's also very sensitive. It's amazing to see him reacting to the our childhood songs. Fuck off, haters!
100% ! Thanks to Dereck I (re)discovered Mylene Farmer hehehe... And I am enjoying so much reviving my High School and College parties with his 80's and 90's french pop/rock reviews !
Exactly, the best of the best.we miss them so much
Yes. Dereck should react to more Goldman song. "Là-bas" : good music, strong lyrics, nice video. And emotion to see Sirima, the female singer, savagely killed by her boyfriend.
hello dereck it will be great if u try to react on new wave french singer like Clara Luciani, Angèle or Julien Doré for exemple. There is a lot of nice stuff to listen !!
Well said, Dereck ! Screw (oops language!) the haters, you're such a lovable guy and I never doubted the genuineness of your reactions 😊 And another great video, thank you for your content and much love from France !
I recommend "la corrida" by Francis Cabrel. a magnificent song or he makes speak the bull which one slaughters in the arena. a real gem if you can find a site that translates the lyrics to you 😉
non Francis Cabrel "encore et encore"
Yes ! Excellent song. With the gipsy kings singer at the end. Celebrities in the US ! And "Octobre" or "La cabane du pêcheur" too.
Excellent choice.
Also “je l’aime à mourrir” (the Shakira version is great as well)
"La corrida" est une superbe chanson
My favorite version is still Michel Berger's one... And it's HIS song anyway.
in the version of Johnny, you can feel first his anger... in the version of France Gall, that's compassion first, her version gave me "goose pumps" at the first seconds. and the version of Michel made me cry...
Oui. 👍🏻
Now I'm waiting for YOUR cover of the song :).
You are so absolutely right, if someone doesn't like what you do, they're not forced to watch the channel. Everybody has the right to have an opinion, and be respected for that even if not agreed.
Thanks a lot! ❤️
Michel Berger '' les princes des villes '' is a very good one 👌🏽🙏
Very good songs!!!
Diego is a so powerful song.... Thanks Michel Berger for it.
Derek, don't listen to the haters. You're the only one and I thank you so much for making me rediscover all these beautiful songs with your unique personality.
I think this is your best video ever.
Thank you very much for this moment.
Hello from Paris ! I'm sure you'll like this french 80's songs:
"Noir et blanc" from Bernard Lavilliers,
and the awesome "Yeke Yeke" from Mory Kante.
And Thanks for your passion and your energy!
Owww yes, i love Noir et Blanc !!
Hello Derek ! :) coucou from Brittany ! :)
Michel Berger and his wife France Gall are singing a story. Johnny is singing his story.
The full title of the song is "Diego libre dans sa tete". Wonderful how you put three versions on one video and made comparisons
Well done on tackling the haters Dereck. Don’t let them get to you though, people who cannot behave online or otherwise do not need our attention beyond reporting them.
I am loving this video, all three versions are worthy of a reaction so let’s not choose 😉.
My favorite is still the Michel Berger one as it is the most emotional!! You feel better the liberty striped from Diego and how he probably ended his life in prison alone and powerless.
❤️❤️❤️🇨🇵🇨🇵🇨🇵❤️❤️❤️
❤❤❤ this song gives me goosebumps ! Love the Michel Berger 's version. Sure those 3 great singers now sing together in heaven.
hi Derek! I never post comments on CZcams, but now I think you need it, and you deserve it, your videos do me so much good, seeing your frank and natural reactions to my favorite titles make me laugh with happiness alone in front of my screen. You have my support, and don't dwell on those few insinuating haters. Thanks I adore you! Sorry for my English…

Totally on your side! you do a great job § are so enjoyable to follow, you deserve all our respect § support! I hope my french fellow citizens agree! ;)
I was hoping for a reaction to this song but I did not expect 3 versions at once, this is great!
I like them all but Johnny Hallyday's is probably my favourite, the strength and raw emotion of his interpretation always gives me chills.
Well done bud. Haters will always be haters. Keep posting great reactions. We love them. One love 💙🇮🇹
Johnny hallyday was awesome. Love his voice.
You bring French songs to a brighter light! I used to find French songs boring but with your reactions, I like them🙂
So sad that they're no more among us Johnny, France, Michel...we will never forget you 😢
I think you mean "forget" (oublier) and not "forgive" (pardonner). 😉

OMG ! Thank you so much for that triple reaction, Dereck. That was so emotional. That song is really beautiful and these 3 artists are so talented.
I had chills throughout this video. Thanks again for that and have a nice day, Dereck.
Love you dereck !! delighted that you like our national musical heritage!!❤️😘
Three marvellous versions of a great song !
A great song, 3 great artists with their own take. Thank you for allowing us to appreciate them in one sequence.
In France, we have a genius of imitation, michael gregorio. His version is a medley of berger and johnny. You should listen this dereck !!!
Hi,
Thank you so much !
This song is magical, it takes all our humanism and put it on the stage !
The all 3 singers are dead, they are iconic !
This video is so emotional, for me it's your best !
Well said Dereck! Sometimes you need to make point!!!! You're doing a good job!
No cambies nada Dereck.
I find the 3 songs complementary as one is the scream from inside, the second is the regret and the last one is the melancholy in the prison cell!
Berger's version is the best I think, so sober, so pure, so deep, he did just what the song needed, nothing more.
I only knew Diego by Johnny Halliday, thanks for giving me the opportunity to listen to other versions
You give us goosebumps Dereck don't listen to the haters. I'm french it's a pleasure to see your reacts to our songs. Keep going we love you !!!
Michel BERGER.. 😭😭💖💖💖..
Beautiful emotionnal song keyboards AND piano. + fretless bass sound and super cool ending.
From Michel, you might wanna listen to "Chanter pour ceux".
And listen the Laam version too.
Yes! "Chanter pour ceux" is amazing
Hello Dereck, thank you for this song choice, these are three very nice versions of this wonderful song that resonates a lot with me at the moment, because in France, it's hard very hard, so thank you, Kiss from France
hi Dereck, I am a French who watches all your videos. three interpretations for a song, Johnny interprets revolt and anger to us, France Gall with her gentleness returns innocence to us in the face of injustice, when to Michel Berger, he delivers us sadness.
The 3 versions are really great. I have a personal preference for France's one though. I just love her voice and sensitivity a lot. More France Gall please!
In France with us Johnny Hallyday is the only one with Claude François to always be up to date Michel Berger wrote a lot of songs for Johnny Hallyday a great man in France Claude François (Cloclo) was in a relationship with France Gall from where Claude François created the original of the song (My way)
Exact
Correct!
Love and Peace to you Dear Dereck
You are so nice and sensitive man, very pleased to watch your videos
Thanks a lot for your interest to discover many many hits from all the world entire (i hope my english correct ☺️) 💚⭐💚
Thank you very much Dereck for all those Diegos :)
Thanks for your videos.
For the little story, Johnny and Lenny Kravitz where very good friends.
Greating from France.
Keep on
I love the Michel Berger version, but the 3 are very good anyway..such a good idea to have the 3 together
Thank’s Dereck . For me,France Gall is the best version ,we can feel the émotion .
Don't pay attention to haters Dereck!
Whatever, you will always have your faithful public! You were still celebrating your 100 000 that you already have in fact more than 106 000 subscribers, waiting and listenning each of your reaction with great pleasure!
Diego is a typical hispanic name, not so common in France!
The song is absolutely fabulous! Diego is free in his head...
I already knew Johnny's version, absolutely delightfull, to my perspective the best one, and very emotive!
I didn't know France Gall's one I discovered thanks to you. It is good one too! And thanks to you, I realised I already knew Michel Berger's version, a very good one too!
Michel Berger died much too early because all his songs are masterpieces!
Both three versions are good but
I personally prefer Johnny's one not only because I'm used to it, but also because it was very good and because I find it very emotive!
I like the powerful version!
France Gall was a real star when her husband was still writing her songs, and stayed a good artist we tend to forget a bit with the time! Her real tubes are Elle jouait du piano debout and Il est libre Max!
Thank-you so much for your reactions because you make me revisit the songs I love with a lot of pleasure!
And to show the different versions is a good idea because we can discover the other versions we didn't know! Thank-you Dereck for your efforts and we'll always support you!
OK Dereck, i like yours videos.
Johnny is so powerful in this version. Lots of "rock" elements (guitar, drums, percussions). In my opinion, the podium is: #1 Johnny H. (for the power), #2 France G. (for the smoothness), and 3rd Michel B. (for..erhm... well for no specific reason, but there must be someone in the third position I guess).
I am not a fan of Johnny, specially for his songs when he was the most popular, at the beginning of the XXIst century. But this one explains why he is a true singer and so popular.
France love you dereck for all your react…… ❤️❤️
Merci Dereck
Great reaction to this great song. I like how you compared these three very different versions. Even if I don't agree with you on the ranking, I agree with you that all three are very good.
Énorme d'entendre Johnny encore et encore😌😌😌🎸🎸🎸🤘🤘🤘
Hi Dereck, thank's for this video. Proud to see you react is as mine on the France gall version. So lovely seen your eyes when you heard her voice for the fist time ;) And me to I sing and humhumhum when I listen it lol You just have to learn french now to planty enjoy french's songs ! Sure lot's of us will be happy to help you for that and wellcom you here in France for a quick learning :) Kiss from France.
You Must try Francis Cabrel "La Corrida" and "Encore et Encore" ... Please Dereck 🌬🌫🌪🌹🌹🌹
I discovered your channel a few weeks ago, and I followed you immediately because I love your positivity. Looking your videos makes me feel good, that's it. So f*** the haters, just be you 😊
Really like what you do, from France you can’t imagine the power of these songs from Johnny and Daniel
You did an amazing job mate !
Thank you Dereck! One of my favorite song! This is a monument with a very deep message...
A plea for freedom of speech and against arbitrary detention.
It's great to hear 3 versions in a row. You should do that more often :)
Hi Dereck,
The original version is Michel Berger's who was also this song's writer and composer. His wife's version is very close (same rythm, same sadness with higher notes). Johnny Halliday's version is very different, more powerfull and I find its similar to Daniel Balavoine's song "Frappe avec ta tête" which deals with a similar subject by the same power and intensity.
I hope you'll read me and my English wasn't so bad. Thank you very much for your videos.
I thought France Gall did the first version in the album 'Résiste' published in 1981 and later her husband did it too.
@@stateless4255 Oui la version de France Gall est de 1981, celle de Michel Berger est de 1983
@@stateless4255 You're right and I was wrong. I wrote too fast. :-) Thank you !
Salut je trouve tes avis pertinents continue, j'adore!!🙂🙂
Yet another French bloke here, passing by at nearly 3 AM.
When a person castigates remakes of a same song by saying it’s lazy and uninspired, I always bring up these three versions of « Diego libre dans sa tête » to demonstrate how many artists can sing the very same text and convey the very same message, but with a often wildly different set of emotions. France Gall’s is lyrical, compassionate, with a sense of urgency from the bass line and hints of gospel-ish from the hums. Michel Berger’s is by contrast, more intimist, very expressive but not excessively so, it’s wavering, as if he’s in mourning. And Johnny Hallyday… well, true to himself and its rock’n’roll ethos, his rendition of « Diego » feels larger than life and way more « in your face », but for a reason: while still conveying the same grief as the other two (and especially Berger), it’s done so with pure rage and anger, like a wounded animal; it feels organic, you can hear him sing its guts out.
As biased as I might be, I can’t really decide on a « best » iteration. I never listened to Véronique Sanson’s rendition, though… I probably should 😅
Anyways, it’s always a pleasure to witness people from other countries sharing their feelings about French music, personally, it allows me to rediscover artists and works that we, Frenchies, think we know by heart. Kudos mate!
Thanks Dereck ! A lot ! I'm french, sorry for my english ;) Michel Berger was my first love in song, I was a little girl and I sang all his songs, because the piano and his voice made me vibrate ... Thank you for doing what you do and for making us rediscover our hits favorites of our wonderful French singers!
TRIO REACTION, what a wonderful idea !!!
And what a iconic, beautiful song in France (Diego, lyrics by Michel Berger)
Thanks Dereck for months now, l dive in to my memories cause of you. So much emotions l forgot all about. Im so grateful.
Johnny the power, France the sweetness and and Michel the accuracy .
So good to see your reaction about our best singers. Thanks so much for your videos. J'attends la prochaine avec impatience 👍💚💛❤️
Diego was a big hit for Johnny. His idol and influence, like many was Elvis.
Man you are awesome, that's really cool that you react to all those old song !
Thanks for that and continu to react as you do !
I loved Johnny pre, during & past his marriage to France Gall. Still love him but mostly at his pic of 1960s & 70s. He was one of our icons in France when I was growing up. We love France Gall but she was never in Johnny’s caliber. They both came back to popularity few decades later. Johnny’s old songs are still loved.

This was beautiful, a beautiful melody, very emotional.
I think I prefer the Michel Berger's version, because of the delicacy of the guitar and of the piano.

Very nice idea Dereck, to get these different versions into one video! 💪😉
Juste magnifique j'adoooooor 🙏♥️
Derek, you made me rediscover some french classics (especially Rita Mitsouko's video clips), and it's obvious you're genuine. Haters don't understand how a man can have feelings.
And in France we're not used to express our emotions like Americans can (we're often mocking you with "Oh My God, Amazing!").
And it's a great idea to react to multiple versions of one song, you often didn't pick the best one, and this way you can compare by yourself.
Keep going it's a pleasure.
great song ...i like to see all your réactions to french song . merci merci merci ! kiss from france . corinne
Hi Dereck! I think I recognized Michel Berger's voice in the humming you love so much in France Gall's version 😉. I love this song, and Michel Berger and France Gall versions especially.
