I already knew Johnny's version, absolutely delightfull, to my perspective the best one, and very emotive!
I didn't know France Gall's one I discovered thanks to you. It is good one too! And thanks to you, I realised I already knew Michel Berger's version, a very good one too!
Michel Berger died much too early because all his songs are masterpieces!
Both three versions are good but
I personally prefer Johnny's one not only because I'm used to it, but also because it was very good and because I find it very emotive!
    I like the powerful version!
France Gall was a real star when her husband was still writing her songs, and stayed a good artist we tend to forget a bit with the time! Her real tubes are Elle jouait du piano debout and Il est libre Max!
Thank-you so much for your reactions because you make me revisit the songs I love with a lot of pleasure!
And to show the different versions is a good idea because we can discover the other versions we didn't know! Thank-you Dereck for your efforts and we'll always support you!

Johnny is so powerful in this version. Lots of "rock" elements (guitar, drums, percussions). In my opinion, the podium is: #1 Johnny H. (for the power), #2 France G. (for the smoothness), and 3rd Michel B. (for..erhm... well for no specific reason, but there must be someone in the third position I guess).

    Hi Dereck,
The original version is Michel Berger's who was also this song's writer and composer. His wife's version is very close (same rythm, same sadness with higher notes). Johnny Halliday's version is very different, more powerfull and I find its similar to Daniel Balavoine's song "Frappe avec ta tête" which deals with a similar subject by the same power and intensity.
I hope you'll read me and my English wasn't so bad. Thank you very much for your videos.

Yet another French bloke here, passing by at nearly 3 AM.
When a person castigates remakes of a same song by saying it’s lazy and uninspired, I always bring up these three versions of « Diego libre dans sa tête » to demonstrate how many artists can sing the very same text and convey the very same message, but with a often wildly different set of emotions. France Gall’s is lyrical, compassionate, with a sense of urgency from the bass line and hints of gospel-ish from the hums. Michel Berger’s is by contrast, more intimist, very expressive but not excessively so, it’s wavering, as if he’s in mourning. And Johnny Hallyday… well, true to himself and its rock’n’roll ethos, his rendition of « Diego » feels larger than life and way more « in your face », but for a reason: while still conveying the same grief as the other two (and especially Berger), it’s done so with pure rage and anger, like a wounded animal; it feels organic, you can hear him sing its guts out.
As biased as I might be, I can’t really decide on a « best » iteration. I never listened to Véronique Sanson’s rendition, though… I probably should 😅
Anyways, it’s always a pleasure to witness people from other countries sharing their feelings about French music, personally, it allows me to rediscover artists and works that we, Frenchies, think we know by heart. Kudos mate!

I loved Johnny pre, during & past his marriage to France Gall. Still love him but mostly at his pic of 1960s & 70s. He was one of our icons in France when I was growing up. We love France Gall but she was never in Johnny’s caliber. They both came back to popularity few decades later. Johnny’s old songs are still loved.

Derek, you made me rediscover some french classics (especially Rita Mitsouko's video clips), and it's obvious you're genuine. Haters don't understand how a man can have feelings.
And in France we're not used to express our emotions like Americans can (we're often mocking you with "Oh My God, Amazing!").
And it's a great idea to react to multiple versions of one song, you often didn't pick the best one, and this way you can compare by yourself.
    Keep going it's a pleasure.
