Edwin van der Sar is a true legend at Manchester United and he will go down as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time! Not once in my life of watching United did I ever have a moment where I felt frustrated with him. The guy never made mistakes. true pro
One time he caught ball and accidentaly it slipped in goal 2010 .thats about it i guess

@@PotatoMan67890 i read somewhere that he was considered to replace Schmeichel Sr in 99, but he chose Juve.
Schmeichel was a very good keeper, but Edwin took it to the next level. He really was, not only an incredible keeper he was also a truly fantastic athlete and you can understand just why Fergie cadjoled him into playing on longer than he initialy wanted to. Salute!

No Schmeichel was an explosive keeper who commanded from the back. Similar to Kahn.
VDS was a different breed though, similar to De Gea.. Silent, quiet and makes every outfield player forget there is a GK coz he makes everyone , defenders , midfielders, attackers feel secure...

Can't forget those memories that he had given us,
-Community shield all penalty saved against Mourinho's Chelsea
-Champions league winning penalty saved
-Always with both hands, even in the top corners
list can be on and on. He was best and supported by one of the best defenders of the time. Neville, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra.
That's why he still hold that record 1311 minutes without conceding a goal. True Legend.
On the other hand De Gea also has that potential to be the great keeper but the defenders in front of him doesn't deserve to be there.
If supported by top class defender De Gea will be creating so many history in coming years.
Hope Jose Mourinho soon finds the stability in the team.

De Gea had Vidic and Ferdinand and had the PL title with them. I hope Ole will win some trophies... At least in the CL league the team started well...

What I love about van der sar is he could save in the top corner and hold on to it. I think I only saw one like that on this video because they don't look so spectacular, but that was his bread and butter.

When Edwin Van Der Sar played for Manchester United he was my favorite footballer. The GOAT of goalkeepers.
I only have the upmost respect for this guy, what an absolute monster in goal.
Lets be honest.......he was the missing link. He literally saved the club and made it complete again.
Definitely that is why MU supporters didn’t noticed this, they great because of their GK. Always save them from losing or draw countless times.

Best goalkeeper ever, had it all. Calmness, communication, positioning, great reflex, never a bad period or weird errors, long reach, athletic, tall, good with his feet and a penaltykiller. Seriously, what do you want more from a goalkeeper? He’s like a prototype of the ideal gk. Best ever for me.

Van der sar would hold onto balls without parrying them whereas the same shot most keepers wouldn't even reach. Absolute legend
van der Sar had such calming authority. He controlled the box without needing to shout at the defenders. Had such a presence between the posts.

This is the pinnacle of what a great goal keeper should be. His form was impeccable. The best in the world at the time. I would rate him on Par with Peter even better.
Fantastic goalkeeper. I remember as a United fan having so much faith and confidence in Edwin when we had him. I felt that if/ when he was beaten it was just because of a fantastic strike. He rarely made any sloppy errors.
Think it was Fergie himself who said that we should've signed him in 1999 after Schmeichel left to take the reigns.
In saying that I think Edwin just pips Schmeichel for me in my dream United XI. Simply because I watched more of him over the years he was playing, and I was very young when Schmeichel left United. .
Hoping and preying Edwin pulls through now while in hospital. He seems like a very kind and genuine man.

And F Barthez before EvS, he too was considered no1 gk back then, shame the injuries ruined him but he was always a bit undisciplined outside the field.

a very tall keeper who was exceptional at staying low in the pocket when making the save required it, could cover the shots to the corners, possibly the best i've ever seen play GK.
You forgot other things: he was one of best defense organizator and always calm under great pressure.

Fantastic keeper, one of the best. Just a pity he wasted years at Fulham before coming to United. That was one of the strangest decisions ever when he left Juventus and picked Fulham over United. Schmeichel had gone and the door was wide open but big Edwin reckoned Fulham were going places lol..
Going to fulham was how he git gud..weaker teams tends to be shot at than bigger stronger team..imo tho as a goalee
I gurantee he didn't pick Fulham over United, we either weren't in for him or we were too late.

@@markob53 The way I remember it United were definitely in for him but Fulham were on a high with plenty of money behind them. Something steered him away from United, maybe he didn't fancy replacing Schmeichel at that time...
He'd had a torrid time at Juve and Fulham was the only team that went all in for him when Juve wanted rid. We missed an opportunity then by not going for him.

🐐 at least in my lifetime. Today Keepers are valued too much for passing and not enough for organizing defence and actually stopping shots imo. But Van der Sar could do all of that and was a great leader.

Edwin use to be my Joint number one United goalie and it was tough out of him and Peter they had to share the number one spot. I always felt confident watching a game with him in goal. The moment Peter Schmeichel joined Man City he became a disappointing memory, Edwin became my all time Goalkeeper, i miss this kind of leadership at the back and we need it again.
