  • When choosing a lock, two important factors stand out: the level of security to meet your needs; and the kind of environment will you be locking your bike in.
Cable locks are the most commonly used and offer basic to moderate security. Their longer length allows you to secure more of your bike and lock it in more places. They're also lighter and less expensive. Cable locks come in a variety of thicknesses and can be opened with a key or combination.
For a higher level of security you want to reach for U-locks and chains. They're more rugged and generally harder to defeat. However, this added security also results in more weight so they can be more difficult to transport and often more expensive as well.
