#annihilator #freethinkers - Zábava
Regarding Annihilator's reputation, they're well known among thrash metal fans, but rather niche in the "big picture" of metal. Their problem is that they were among the late blooming thrash bands; '89 was extremely late in the thrash scene, and being from Canada didn't help them get worldwide promotion. In a few years you'd have Metallica breaking through to the mainstream with The Black Album, and Megadeth achieving similar success with Countdown to Extinction, both albums that saw them simplifying their sounds and moving away from thrash; so Annihilator is just one of the bands that got a bit lost in the late, changing tides of metal.
Absolutely "on spot" comment! Nothing more to add.
Of course the onset of grunge sure as hell didn't help
I do love Annihilator, Jeff Waters writes some of the most interesting riffs... I think one of the main things that held them back is their cheesy lyrics and the delivery of those lyrics. On top of that the constant lineup changes didn't help..
For me there was no consistency within the sound of the band because of the ever changing line up and front men. Annihilator has always had great success over seas though, just not in North America. You might add that Dave Mustaine tried to recruit Jeff Waters for Megadeth, but Jeff refused because Megadeth is Dave's band and Jeff wouldn't have much say, or creative control
Not to mention with Annihilator changing their sound with the third album and the iffy albums through the 90s. There are some good songs within those releases but as a whole they were rather... well bad, heh. IMO they didn't get back to the speed until Criteria for.Black Widow, and it still took a few albums to really get going again (though the rather large misstep with the album Metal I think in 2007 also put a damper on things)
Me in 2017: Wow some dudes reacting to metal, let me see it
Me in 2019: They grew up so fast :’)
There getting close now to being Metal experts
indignomo san lol
@@yugster78 they are not just simple metal heads now. They are in the middle of metal and proghead now. Just look at how they reacted to more technical playing in the past and how they react to too much of simple playing now.
@@yugster78 they started at almost complete zero and they've come a long way, but they are nowhere near being experts.
I love how they still keep going and how they evolved their setup and knowledge throughout time
Jeff Waters is one of the most underrated guitarists in metal. Ever
agree
EXACTLY!!\,,/❤\,,/
This!!!!
Total mente de acuerdo .
He’s THE most underrated
"Alice In Hell" and "Allison Hell" remind me of Slayer's "Raining Blood" in their album "Reign In Blood".
I always thought of it that way too lol
Exactly my thought
I hear it too man! But im also hearing some Megadeth too. Like a Slayer/Megadeth mix. I cant believe this is the first im hearing of it
@@kriseasterwood2664 I don't think he meant the sound, he meant the titles.
@@kriseasterwood2664 jeff has said his biggest influences are megadeth and slayer, so you hit it right on the nose lol
Glad you included Crystal ann before Alison Hell.
It would have been blaspheme not to
Agree. There are some songs out there that have a small musical interlude song/intro that really makes the main track that much better. This is one of them .
Yes! They should always go together.
Yeah it was a good choice. When I clicked on the video I had hoped that they would
@@stevej.1428
Megadeth has lots of those. Into The Lungs of Hell / Set The World Afire and many many others. Kinda like Slayer. You can't play Raining Blood without playing Postmortem first.
Holy shit! My uncle is in this band! This rules!
Is Jeff Waters your uncle
Really Jeff Waters??
Jeff Waters is your uncle?
Fabio?
Pics or it never happened
Savatage- Hall of the mountain king.
gotta listen to Prelude to Madness first!
YES YES YES!!!!! But with Prelude to Madness at the beginning.
Super sic song
Exactly!
Thank you, I will listen now
Metal has always appreciated and incorporated classical music. It's one of the best parts about it.
Metal music doesn't have an expiration date like the crap we're here on the radio.
@@peterross6050This is true as well. We have a sense of history, and the music has integrity, so it doesn't just go out of style in a year.
The most important experience is including crystal ann .very important
Agreed
Totally agree
its good but alison hell stands fine on its own
Agreed, the acoustics on both tracks just rip throughout,
Not necessarily.
Jeff waters is one the best guitarist around the metal scene but not a lot of people know who he is
I’ve always considered him a Canadian Dave Mustaine.
tylerdude1982 however he’s mustaine and Friedman put together since he does the most important and complicated solos too in all his songs
@@tylerdude1982 Mustaine had Waters on his radar when looking to replace Friedman. True fact.
Definitely. I consider him one of THE greatest metal players I've ever heard. He did an amazing song with Alexi Laiho called Downright Dominate, where they takes turns at soloing and it is just unreal how good it is.
Martin Kingston yes he also did one with Jeff loomis on that cd was great also
Death - Voice of the Soul, such emotion from only instruments
Best instrumental song I've ever heard. The feels are real.
RIP Chuck...
YES!
So much this........
Voice of the Soul is the best instrumental of all time.

Jeff Waters is one the greatest thrash metal guitar players. Legit
Totaly fantastic guitarist
Thrash or not..just an amazing unique guitar player ! Love it
It's such a shame more people dont know who he is. Imo one of the greatest ever.
Yeah he's a beast
Hell yes
Great song, Jeff Waters is a highly under appreciated guitarist in my opinion.
Crystal Ann is excellent guitar playing. Many could play that with electric guitar with little bit of distortion, but only few can play it with classical guitar like Jeff.
He is. Technically many are better but he plays to a massively high level and does it with taste and style. His solos just work 😎
One of the most underrated guitarists ever, without a doubt
I agree, very underappreciated guitarist
Who is under-appreciating jeff? they under-appreciate subsequent songs and albums. they didn't live up to this song.
Love Annihilator! One of my favourite bands from my home country. Jeff Waters is pretty much a Canadian Dave Mustaine. The man is a hugely underrated guitarist. Dave even tried to recruit him back in the day.
I heard about that too!!
Jeff is untouchable
definitely proud they are a Canadian band! Waters is amazing !
Waters is amazing and I would never call him "underrated". Every metal fan worth his/her salt knows he's the real deal.
Can I just say that you two are made for metal. Some people will never know because they won't give it a chance and some people hear it and just don't get it, but you guys got over that benchmark and gave it a chance and found something you truly enjoy. Thank you for being open minded, free thinkers!
Before this album was released, Dave Mustaine asked Jeff Waters (the guitar player for Annihilator) to join Megadeth before they had auditioned Marty Friedman. He wanted to use Crystal Ann as the opening to Rust In Peace
Wow, never heard about this, crazy. Thanks!
As far as I know he also asked Dimebag but he refused it because of his brother. (Dave already had a drummer for Megadeth)
there's a video on CZcams somewhere of Jeff playing the solo for Symphony of Destruction
Mustaine has asked Waters to join on several occasions from what I remember. But I'm pretty sure he asked the first time AFTER hearing this album? I do remember Dave saying that the band listened to the record over and over for weeks or something like that.
AFTER this album was released. Otherwise it's a correct story.
As a metalhead, I feel embarrassed and ashamed that I have never heard much annihilator. Im fuckin glad you guys did this one, cause this song is great!
Me too, just heard armed to the teeth today and then this, and now I gotta get into everything else
Since i heard Annihilator i almost stopped listening any other metal bands. I needed years to discover all their songs. I have maybe 50 favorites. And i never get tired to listen them
Yep they've been so underrated, me too I found them late compared to the time the album came out, exodus as well I was late with them but now I've got time to listen their music
Be glad then, you can listen to them for the first time!
Don't feel embarrassed. They sucked bad since the year 2000
Jeff Waters is one of the best riff writers in metal. Sometimes his songs sound like just a collection of riffs, but when he puts them together in one cohesive song, like this one, it's undeniable. Glad you guys dug it.
This vocalist sadly died a couple of months ago
Jeff Waters died???????
@@socialxperiment3162 Jeff Water wasn't the singer at that time, the guy was named Randy Rampage
@@teddoucet7323 oh shit, thanks lol
@@socialxperiment3162 To be fair, Jeff DID sing in that song. Only the high "Alice in hell" part though. The Main part was indeed sang by Randy Rampage, who passed away.
RIP
That's why 'the first' song is so important. People who want you to get into their band suggestions need to stop suggesting their most obscure and/or heavy/fast/whatever songs.
EXACTLY!!!!!!!
To be fair that Didn't work with Sepultura. I think it really depends on the band.
Wasn't expecting Annihilator, deep dive into metal. Loved this album
Since you like these transitions, you might consider "The Fun Palace," or "Never Neverland," on the album that followed this one. The production is cleaner, and the transitions are magical. Prog-leaning.
The riffs, transitions and proggyness on those too, ah!
And the solos there are so tasty one cannot put it to words!
fun palace
I'm an old enough metalhead that I feel like I should have heard of this band, but this is the first I've ever heard it. Like, I'm genuinely surprised I've never heard a band from this era that's this good.
Thanks for introducing a long-time metal fan to a new band, guys!
You guys must listen to Coroner, Swiss technical thrash of the highest quality.
I agree completely. I just hit these guys with the link to Masked Jackal.

Corner is an epic thrash band
Annihilator - Never, Neverland! Another great song (and album) from Annihilator!
Havok - Time is up. One of the best Thrash bands in recent years.
Have you checked out warbringer, vindicator, Terrifier, exmortus, or shrapnel, if you like havok and what to her other great modern thrash bands check these guys out
Check out Crisix too
For example Ultra Thrash
"Artillery - By Inheritance" is number 33 on Loudwires Top 50 Thrash Metal Albums of All Time. You guys should really check out that album. I would recommend the song by the same title as the album "By Inheritance" or "khomaniac". Similar to the intro here, you should also start off with the intro "7:00 From Tashkent". Another reason would to listen to them is that you havn't covered many danish metal bands, only King Diamond I believe?
That album is wicked. Never leaves the CD player in my car
This albun is a masterpiece, dude.
Don't Believe is a great song from that record to do a video about.
One of few perfect albums. Even the Razamanaz cover is pretty good
Khomaniac is one of the greatest thrash songs period
Sacred Reich - The American Way. Suicidal Tendencies - You Can't Bring Me Down.
American Way is a killer riff
U cant bring me down!
If they did Sacred Reich I think One Nation would be a better pick.
Hear hear! These songs a not only the soundtrack of my youth but also absolute rippin’ songs on their own.. they stand the test of time to degree
@@swirvinbirds1971 I would go with Surf Nicaragua myself.
Nice! Finally!
Also, I'm going to keep throwing this out there: Megadeth - The Conjuring. Awesome riffs and transitions, you guys will dig it

I Love Kreator BUT The Big Bands of Germany are ACCEPT, The Scorpions & Helloween. I KNOW they are Not Thrash. But still Germanys Best Bands.
@@MetalHeart8787 I like Kreator more than those other bands. I do like Helloween's keeper of the seven key albums though and Accept's restless and wild album. Sorry I never got into the Scorpions. Didn't really enjoy what I heard from them.
Kreator is awesome
@@Technoidmania Check out their Uli Jon Roth era then. The rest can be overlooked without regret.
In case no one else mentioned it, the singer, Randy Rampage was in a famous Canadian hardcore/punk band called D.O.A., this was a huge departure for him but man he killed it on this album! I saw them on this tour open for Testament and they were killer!!! Amazing musicmanship and Randy was a monster live! He unfortunately passed away last August....R.I.P.
Please react to more Annihilator!!!!!!
“The Fun Palace” is a MUST
My favorite song of Annihilator, they should listen to it.

Us Canucks have had some of the best and underrated metal bands.
No one mention the most underrated thrash metal band ever? Toxik? No one??
Toxik - Think This... Album ( All song's great ) ‼️
I agree, but they will hate the vocals.
Yo, I liked your guys album
Annihilator - Road to Ruin
Great thrash about idiots who know they're drunk, but think they can drive home anyway.
The solo in Road to Ruin is awesome too.
SAVATAGE - When the Crowds are Gone
A classic band with some of the best lyrics in Metal.
cheers!
Savatage has sooo many good songs. I'd choose something more dynamic, though.
Stanislav Katkov Gutter Ballet (song, but whole album’s awesome) would be a great intro to Savatage. Shows off several sides to the band.
Dead winter dead, would kill
Seeing them react to Hall of the Mountain King would be awesome. But it has to be the music video cuz it's too hilarious to pass up lol And Criss Oliva deserves some screen time
Your reaction to this song is pretty much what I experienced when I first heard it back in highschool, it blew my mind back then and it's been in my playlist ever since.
Another great and somewhat unknown thrash band is Artillery. They're danish and in my opinion one of the more unique ones in the scene.
Emmanuel Zamorano Khomaniac from Artillery would be awesome! 🤘
By Inheritance is a great album
Right on man, By Inheritance is a masterpiece of an album.
God bless you. Artillery is GREAT
Yes Khomaniac would be awesome!!!!
holy shit how did i miss this song?? That was awesome! I've never heard that before wow
I love when bands lead into one song from another one like this. I can't listen to Judas Priest's Electric Eye without first letting Hellion do it's thing. What are some other good "intro's" out there?
Hellion is epic.
Capsizing The Sea into In Waves by Trivium is one that comes to mind for me
Listen to Dialectic Chaos and This Day We Fight by Megadeth. Incredible man I tell ya
Postmortem transition into Raining Blood to Black Magic, yes three songs lmao
Edit:By Slayer
Autopsy - Fleshcrawl + Torn From The Womb
Opeth - Coil + Heir Apparent
I can listen to Heir Apparent by itself, but it becomes even better with Coil. Just like Crystal Ann amd Alison Hell
"Overkill" is one to revisit. Horrorscope or Evil Never Dies are great tunes.
Mean green killing machine. That's ones of the best modern thrash songs I've ever heard. The drums I think will get them in that one
The Yrs of Decay & Who Tends the Fire rocks.
The Green and Black? Gasoline Dream. Fear His Name...
sepultura - desperate cry
Yes!
Two years ago I discovered your channel and started watching out of boredom usually before I went to bed. But as time went on you guys got more and more into metal and I began to appreciate many songs in a new way even after listening to them for years.
Your reactions to the likes of Megadeth and Sabbath had me falling in love with songs again as if I were a 15 year old kid again. And now, with this video and the recent Death Angel reaction you're helping me discover new gems that I never knew existed. Thanks Lost in Vegas! Keep up the good work.
Phantasmagoria is another fantastic Annihilator song, my fav ever, amazing guitar work!
When I got this album in 9th grade, my mom didn't like the title. I played her Crystal Ann only and she thought it was beautiful.
😂 Slick move!
that's so ingenious
Some "lesser known" (at least in the overall metal picture) bands and songs you should check out for Thrash Week: "Masked Jackal" by Coroner, "Brainwashed" by Nuclear Assault and especially "Hello From the Gutter" by Overkill.

We need Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King
Such a great song!
Omg yes! Gotta listen to it with Prelude to Madness though!
Hell ya , wish i could oike that comment twice ha
YES we do!!!!
That and Gutter Ballet!
Never heard of "Lost in Vegas" before, I guess they're into a musical genre definitely other than rock or metal. Given that "Alison Hell" is one of my most favourite songs of all time, I really enjoyed watching their reaction to it for two reasons. They had no idea what they had coming so their surprise was genuine, plus it is really pleasant to see people with totally different preferences appreciating something undeniably beautiful and unique. Apparently, they know a thing or two about music, so I'll look into them as well.
Yes. You could say they started the CZcams trend of Hip-Hop fans reacting to Metal, later also listening to other genres. They are also basically Metalheads already. Great, open-minded guys. Definitely look at how their Metal reactions progressed.
They are huge hip hop heads. Got started doing Logic reactions and then branched to rock, metal and country. Even though their primary musical choices are hip hop, rnb, and funk, they appreciate music at every level. Their hip hop breakdowns got me back into hip hop after not caring about it for years and they have a great grasp on the nuances of what make our favorite songs great.
Both the comments telling you what they are about are 100% correct.
I remember hearing this for the first time in my dads Truck on a long drive to see my grandma and grandpa when I was like 12 or 13. The whole album rules tbh best time to jam this album is late night drives, because thats how I first heard it hahaha
I was 9 I'm 13 now I'm still in love with this
Love that you guys look at this with the intro. You guys are doing great
This made my day. In the 90s, I was getting guitar tips through email by Jeff Waters (the guitarist behind Annhilator), and I have always been a huge fan. Jeff is an amazing shredder, but he is truly one of the riff masters.

@@paulknowles6433 I love all the annihilator albums, I embrace sound change and evolution of music. But some don't like drastic changes in bands music I don't mind it at all.... To an extent though
I completely agree. I like a band that evolves but keeps it real. Some just stray too far from the formula that hooked fans in the first place. Success sometimes destroys bands and some bands just get even better with it and don't dilute the music with the taste of success

Flotsam and Jetsom: No Place for Disgrace.

killer albums..
There's something good on each album
So glad you guys did this reaction, I was one of the few people that suggested this song a while ago. I am a fan of Annihilator (mainly the first four albums to be honest) and Jeff Waters is one of my favorite guitarist, he's such an inspiration. To explain further what Annihilator really is, the band IS Jeff Waters. He recorded every guitar tracks and also BASS (his bass skills are insane btw) in all his albums, he hired drummers and singers for studio and touring and he did all (or almost all) of the production himself (and wrote all the songs etc). As a musician, he has a classical and jazz background from when he was young, and it's quite interesting how he blends some more complex classical arrangements and jazzy stuff in his songs. He is obviously a very talented and accomplished musician. His guitar work is crazy, some of the best metal riffs and solos out there. He also struggled with alcohol addiction and became sober, he then helped a lot of musicians that has similar problems and also with legal issues (like musicians that get screwed with unfair contracts). He's a good person and highly respected in the metal community. David Ellefson (bassist of Megadeth) said that he was a huge fan of Alice in Hell album and he used to listen to it with other members of the band while recording Rust in Peace for inspiration. On a side note, while Alice in Hell is a true thrash metal album, most of Annihilator music is more toward the heavy metal / speed metal side (with a strong thrash influence though).
If you guys ever want to revisit Annihilator for future reaction, I would suggest Stonewall (from Never Neverland (1990)) and Set The World on Fire (from the album of the same name, (1993)). The album King of the Kill (1994) also features a few gems like the self-title track and Second to None if you ever go even deeper in his work.
I forgot to also suggest ''The Fun Palace'' from Never Neverland and I also forgot to say that Annihilator is considered as part of the Canadian big four of thrash (along with Voivod, Razor, Exciter, Sacrifice, .. yeah, sources differs as what band makes the ''big 4'' but they always include Annihilator and Voivod). Anyways, keep up the good work guys I really like your videos. Cheers !
