Persistence of Time was the peak of their '80s thrash sound and a lot more accessible if you're into Megadeth, Metallica, and Slayer. They dropped a lot of the tongue-in-cheek lyrics and attitude for PoT. If you're on the fence with Anthrax, PoT is worth a listen. Anthrax's last 2 albums (Worship Music and For All Kings) feature the band at their most polished. Joey's vocals have never been better, and these albums feature some of their catchiest riffs and most melodic songs. I would suggest you check these out before listening to their older stuff as I think it will be more to your taste. In particular the following songs are highlights off the last two records: The Devil You know, Fight'em Till You Can't, I'm Alive, In the End, Monster at the End and Blood Eagle Wings.
The older albums are more iconic, but I have seen some people get turned off of them due to a younger Joey's vocals, the production quality, and some of the goofiness in the songwriting.

This is so entertaining! Being a fan of your channel for the last few years and watching you guys get into metal! Being 54 years old and metal fans since the age of 13, I went through all the genres and growths of all the bands you’re listening to! So it’s cool to hear you say about anthrax How they would stay in this groove at this time and whatever… But they grew as a band with Joey is a singer first and then John midyear and then Joey coming back… They stay true to being the clean and sober, fun, loving, skateboarding, comic book, reading metal fans Who just started the band… So when I was growing up, these guys were my favorite because they weren’t doing drugs and partying all the time they just like to skate and comics… And then in 2010, they put out worship music which restored faith in the band for me so listen to Lone Justice off of Spreading the Disease and then listen to. I am aliveoff of Worship Music.. and never mind. That shit that John sang on.

How you guys have never checked out I'm The Man or Bring The Noise (their collaboration with Public Enemy) is beyond me. To me, one of the reasons Anthrax cemented themselves as one of the larger metal bands in the early days was their willingness to embrace rap in addition to their metal chops. That, and they never seemed to take themselves too seriously. Knowing your background and the fact that you were primarily into the rap scene before your channel, I think you could appreciate and would enjoy their forays into rap long before Limp Bizkit, Korn, et al.

"In the End" from the album Worship Music is one of my favorite Anthrax songs. I feel like when Joey Belladonna came back his vocals improved a lot. And that song specifically is about the passing of Ronnie James Dio and Dimebag Darrell, so I think you'd love the lyrics too.

  • @sumonjamal1653

To put into perspective, 'Madhouse' by Anthrax was also the first music video by a thrash metal band in 1985 (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Exodus... had no music videos at that point)... This was Anthrax's 2nd album 'Spreading the disease'... and Joe Belladonna (lead vocals) had only done an EP ('Armed and dangerous') before he replaced the original lead singer Neil Turbin (who was fired in 1984 after the first Anthrax album 'Fistful of Metal')... Now, Belladonna was not a fan of thrash metal when he joined (He was big fan of Journey... Whitesnake), but he had a great vocal range and Anthrax wanted a real lead singer instead of a typical thrash metal vocalist... But it took a while for Belladonna to get used to the speed & intensity of Anthrax's music.
Rhythm guitarist Scott Ian took time to write a new album of punk rock-influenced thrash metal and recorded it w/ Billy Milano (vocals)... former Anthrax bassist Dan Lilker... and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante... It was released in '85 under the name S.O.D. (Stormtroopers of Death) and the album 'Speak English or die'... That record was essential in bringing a 'crossover' scene between punk rock and thrash metal.
Anthrax were signed to major label Island Record in '85 and they released 'Spreading the disease' which actually charted in the US top 200 and sold close to a half million copies... Anthrax generated a strong fanbase w/ that album and the S.O.D. record, and the next album 'Among the Living' in 1987 would sell gold (over half million copies) in the USA and establish Anthrax as one of the 'Big 4' of thrash metal 🤘🤘

Anthrax- 1985-- brings me back to high school and how hot this band was in NYC. First shows I saw were in 86 at L'amour in Brooklyn. They have had 3 singers--- and their best album is the first thrash masterpiece from 1984- Fistful of Metal....Song suggestions--My favorite by them on the EP- Armed and Dangerous (also a fantastic song) is "Raise Hell" from Fistful- "Howling Furies" or "Subjugator" (the rest of Fistful is pure thrash heaven--but might not be "playlist". From Spreading ( their second best album---lots of goodies- Armed and Dangerous as mentioned, Medusa, Lone Justice... all solid. Following these-- I am the Law... You can kind of skip to Persistence of Time-- the monster heavy song---- mentioned below by someone- "Keep it in the Family" what a great song---heavy as hell and melodic too.
