on the subject of putting animals to sleep: i live by the motto, i'd rather let an animal cross the rainbow bridge 5 minutes too early than just a minute too late.
Just over a week ago I had to put my beloved dog to sleep. she was only one year old. in the middle of the night we drove with her for almost 3 hours to the university clinic. We then got 3 options. leave her there and see if you can save her, take her with you and meds and try it yourself or put her to sleep. I then asked the doctor what he would do if it was his dog and after a while he said: I would put her to sleep because if she stays here there is a 20% chance that we can save her and if we take her with us below 5%. while we were talking (it only lasted about 5 minutes) her condition deteriorated and i said go, we have to redeem her.
it was hard but i think it was right. everyone who thinks they want to decide that if a horse is euthanized here, it is not right. please, would you want to live in pain or something? why should an animal do that if you don't want it for yourselves either. It's never easy to see an animal cross the rainbow bridge, not even for the vet, so you better be happy that these people have their ass in their pants to walk this difficult path. Thank you Horse Plus for your work

I wanted to watch this live thismorning our time - but I had the farrier here myself and went out to my two, sure - someone else held them for me (long time friend and awesome horseman who also him and his wife look after my guys)
Kat is a lovely looking horse - and Kory, I love the way you work with them - theres nothing scary about what you do for even the skittiest of horses.
I do think it is a damn shame that even horses who have lived a nice life in someone's paddock can look pretty, be in good condition, and folk can even worm them in their feeds (even success with various paste ones in feed or the cattle backliners like Ivomec at times if the horses aren't super sensitive) and live without hoof care for the most part if the pasture is 'right' for them with enough limestone close to the surface to wear them down and keep them 'trim' ....
BUT if they get an injury, become ill, need specialist hoof care, dental care, transport etc... You NEED to be able to halter and handle them safely. It is extremely sad to see if you have capable people around who just dont handle them because they dont 'have time' - Im so glad they were surrendered to you guys, they've landed in the right spot, and if between the trainers there and staff, they cant be sorted out and placed, there's definitely something wrong.
    Nawwwwww the doggies are gorgeous!!!

Elijah is wonderful as always and obviously knows his stuff. I'm sorry about Savannah. She spent her time there with people who cared about her and was given a fighting chance. I don't know that much about horse anatomy, but the way the point of the coffin bone was aimed right down at the sole of the hoof made me wince. That had to hurt badly every time she put weight on it. Strawberry isn't the largest donkey, but she meant mayhem with that lightning fast kick. That would easily have broken somebody's leg or wrecked a knee. I hope she settles down, because that's pretty dangerous.

If a horse needs eternal rest, I am ever so grateful that they found themselves in the loving hands of your shelter so they can pass in peace. Not at the hands of a kill floor where after their years of dedication and service, are left to leave in the most horrific manner. I know how hard it is for all of you and how it tears your heart out having to preform the act. Please remind yourself that they pass in peace at the hands of people who give them love until they go. Then picture them running like they did when young in open fields of lush green grass, bucking for fun, then laying down for a good roll. It will help you know you did the right thing for them to get there.

This is something more people need to think through. It's not a pleasant subject, but as all creatures die, how and when is our responsibility and so is making it as easy and pain-fee as possible. I cannot STAND to see animals suffer because people are selfish. I moved recently and had to find a new home for my 20 year old thoroughbred. I got him from a very good rescue, but could not take him with me...he would have hated it here. I ended up doing a free lease. He's expensive to care for and I knew the people who took him, knew the vet, etc. He's in great hands! I get pictures and updates from his new people and he's happy. One of the conversations we had was about end of life decisions and we were in agreement about the no suffering thing. So important!

    • @geminidream4347
      @geminidream4347 Před rokem

@@leec5170 Finally someone agrees with me on the selfish matter! Because it is! It's you not wanting the hurt of letting them go. Not their need to go because they hurt so much they don't want to be awake anymore!
I always spend more money than the cost of putting my pets to sleep when that comes. I get drugs to give them before we even leave the house. I get drugs while we are there if I don't think they are enough. I will buy even more drugs after that if again I feel they are not under the influence enough. In most cases they are sleeping when the lethal needle in injected!
I got fooled once by not following my heart's procedure and this is something I shall carry to my end! My dog fought and looked at me as if to say why, I love you, I would never hurt you like this before he dropped!
Always pay extra no matter what the vet says about the lethal, cause just like us they have different metabolism. A knock out drug for you may have no effect on me. So if they are not willing to do this procedure as you want it done, go elsewhere!!!

Be careful what you watch, things are never how they make them out to be. And people do not respect boundaries or personal space. Some people will disrespect others just to self promote and they don't care about the actual facts or situation of what is really happening. Just don't believe everything you watch and hear. Not even if it seems like a good thing.

I cannot believe that every time I watch this, the decision is made to put a horse down, calling it "the last act of kindness" I haven't watched this in 3 weeks because you put a mare down because nobody could get near her and nobody wanted to work with her!!she was gorgeous, what a waste because she would have made someone a beautiful horse, if you would have advertised her and someone would have spent the time needed with her to turn things around but you guys decided to kill her instead and now I put it on today give it another chance and you're putting another horse down because of his hooves and you say he's in chronic pain and there's nothing you or anybody could do, except another last act of kindness! I hear that term more than I hear any other when I watch your videos. It's really disheartening and sad because you're supposed to be rescuers and when I was watching and the vet made the decision to put her down I thought, wow, how cruel is that, nobody wanted to work with her and get close to her, so she could trust people again or maybe for the first time but instead it was easier for you to do that "last act of kindness"! I guess she just wasn't worth it to you people and neither was this gelding with the cannon bone issue! I will not watch any videos from your place again. I'm done watching the most beautiful Majestic animals that God created, Receive the last act of kindness! people are not supposed to feel such sadness, after watching videos that are supposed to rescue horses! you put four horses down one day a couple weeks ago one of them was that beautiful Mare that I fell in love with, I would give anything to own a horse like her and spend time getting her to trust humans and show her they are not all abusive and cruel, whatever it takes, she had nothing wrong with her physically, you guys just didn't have the time and you never advertised her and what her issues were but I am sure like I said before that someone would have taken her and worked with her because all horses are worth it and you people rescuing her, she never had a chance. That day there was a younger female vet and she made the decision to euthanize the Mare! I got to tell you I really don't understand how people like you that rescue horses just gave up on her due to her personality and fear and confusion. Nobody even tried to get to know her or work with her at all to show her that all people are not bad and that she was safe, none of that was done according to the story that you guys told, the decision was made by the vet or the manager of your supposed Rescue or second chance Farm. That was one of the saddest and backwards decisions, that I have ever witnessed and watching you make the decision again today with that gelding, just brought it all back for me about the Mare! Like I said that is the final straw today, I will never watch your show/videos again, I think you're making bad decisions, especially when you decide that a perfectly healthy beautiful horse should be put down because evidently nobody had the time to spend with her and show her the love she never knew. Like I said you never advertised her for adoption,or training. I know in my heart that someone would have taken her and made a very beautiful, loving productive horse, had she been given the chance for someone to show her kindness and love and worked with her to gain her trust and show her love because that is what horses are, when you get down to it,in the end but not for her, evidently, or the Gelding 😔🐴🐎😢

Beverly, unfortunately these auction rescues and owner surrenders are usually carrying some baggage from bad training ,bad handling ,age , soundness issues etc. Low end horse auctions are dumping grounds for horses with problems. Some issues can be addressed with time and money and training but some cannot. It is better to put the horse down than allow it to endure pain that will never abate or bad handling that has mentally scarred or scared a horse for life till it is a danger to itself and everything around them. I have witnessed the destruction a scared horse can create and the damage it can cause itself and everything around it.My very gentle, very loving gelding that would never hurt anything became colicky overnight and threw himself on the ground so hard he punctured both his eyeballs, tore the paddock board fencing and killed a companion animal .No choice but to euthanize because we could not get to a large animal surgery destination with a horse that was screaming in pain and throwing himself on the ground and could not be safely trailered. So a gentle death is much preferred over terrible pain and suffering or continual pain and suffering till they are driven mad. Mentally healthy cannot be assessed over a video of a few moments with a horse. It takes people with much experience such as a vet and trainer to make the decision and I am sure not lightly. When your purpose is to save horses no one wishes to end a horse’s life with little thought or debate but a horse that is a real danger to himself and others must be humanely euthanized.

Corey, at this moment (as soon as she looked at you) you should have started backing away from her. You want her to know that she has the power to make you stop putting pressure on her by simply giving you both her eyes. The moment she looks away, even with one eye, step towards her. If she gives both eyes again, stop in your tracks. If she moves even slightly towards you, step back........you have just achieved the goal of "hooking on".
I have been training horses on my own since I was 11 years old.....I'm 33 now. I can have a wild mustang haltered, saddled and riding within a week, maybe 2. I highly reccomend Steve Young Horsemanship's yt channel for EVERYONE at HPHS to watch ALL his videos. The man is a genius and has learned from and trained with some of the greatest horsemen and women this planet has or will ever see. His videos have something for everyone involved with horses, at any level, to learn.

Steve Young is awesome! His videos make you feel like you're family too. His son-in-law is a farrier too. Steve Young will go out about an hour before Dan has to be there to do some ground work so it's actually the horse's idea to want to stand still. Horselyx are great too - there's gotta be something in it for them. Steve Young is supposed to be in the Carolinas in May 2024. Kory is very calm and never seen him loose his temper or want to hurry the horse up either. Hope that helps.
