Kawasaki VN1700 Vulcan Vaquero - Performance Intro and Ivan's ECU Reflash

  • This is essentially an ad for Ivan's ECU Reflash for the VN1700 Series bikes. Without it I don't think these bikes are worth owning because of a laundry list of engine issues that I cover somewhat in the video.
    I've done this video to hopefully get people to no repeat my failed work in trying to tune this bike with a Power Commander. It needs the ECU reflashed because Ivan fixes everything, including things that CAN'T be fixed using an external tuner. Please don't waste your time, just get the flash to start with.
    www.ivansperformanceproducts.c...
    I get nothing out of this other than the hope that others won't waste as much time as I did trying to get the VN1700 bikes to run right on their own.

    If you are still wondering if you should do the Ivans tune just STOP!!!!!!!! I just bought a brand new Vulcan voyager. I added the freedom slip ons a K&N filter and Ivans tune. This bike is now a beast!!! You can tell the difference immediatly. Power is better fuel mileage better and throttle response better. And it stays cool!!! It keeps up with any Harley you want to throw at it minus the crazy hopped up ones. All of this for still 10,000 bucks less than a comperable road glide. And that is with all the add ons. Just do it!!!!!!

    Well folks I just received my upgraded *** Ivan ECU Reflash*** for my 2017-Kawasaki-1700-Vulcan-voyager-abs. First and foremost let me tell you that I purchased the bike on the 15th of August, so only a few days ago. The dealership would not let me test drive the motorcycle (which in most cases I would not buy, however they sale was awesome) before I purchased. If I had test drove the motorcycle, I would not have purchased it. Well after I picked up the bike after the purchase, I was man this bike sucks from the heat it created, to what I felt was a turtle going as fast as it could but not getting anywhere coupled with the fact I live in Colorado at most of Colorado is above 6,000 feet in elevation which I'm sure reduces power and limits the air the machine can get. Long story long, I was like I'm sure most folks reading great things about Ivan's ECU reflash and all the problems it would fix, I was not 100% sure if I wanted to spend the $350 plus shipping both ways but this man knows his business. All my heat, power, backfire, etc., are gone. Example: I took it out right after installing Ivan's reflash and he was right on with same amount of power in every gear. I was in 6th gear going 35 miles per hour and it had no issues with throttle response or acceleration, a tad over 1,000 rpm which translates into more MPG. My after MPG on computer showed 49.7 MPG mostly highway and some city when I got back into town. I wrote down the miles before I left and then calculated when I filled up. I used 4 gallons of gas and got 200 miles... 50 MPG for this size of bike that is AWESOME coupled with the power, reduction of heat (my temperature gauge) before the Ivan reflash was always close to the red (far right), it now sits just right of the middle to include stop and go traffic in the city. I was very lucky that I came across Ivan's Reflash when researching how to resolve the bike issues I experienced after my Brand New Purchase a few days ago. I called Ivan's shop a few minutes ago to tell them how happy I am now love my bike. I really love the look, accessories, etc., but hated the performance, heat , etc. issues and was not sure if I would keep the bike..... I'm in Colorado and Ivan's shop is somewhere in NY so those reading this may think I'm getting something from Ivan to promote his ECU flash unit. They would be right on half of that I'm getting performance and love my bike and that's it. Oh and by the way, my bike is completely stock everything. The only thing added was Ivan's ECU reflash. Those folks still looking to resolve performance, heat or any other issues, don't spend a lot of time, money and frustration, call Ivan and get back to enjoying your ride......

      Duce Webber awesome, glad you're digging it. I would assume they don't allow people to test ride them because they blow so bad in stock form.

      @mrquicky Před 7 lety +2

      Duce Webber I live in Texas close to sea level and currently ride a stock 2015 Kawasaki Vaquero. My previous bike was a 2009 Kawasaki Vulcan classic 1600 with custom exhaust, intake and a power commander. The 1600 was more powerful and more fun to drive in almost every way. Your post however, coupled with the video review convinced me to send my ECU to Ivan. My Vaquero had several issues.
      1) It ran extremely hot
      2) Throttle response due to the rev limiting was so sad that second gear made me want to cry.
      3) Deceleration popping made the bike so unsettling to drive that I seriously considered reselling it.
      Ivan's ECU flash solved all of these issues. I cannot recommend this upgrade enough.
      Thanks Duce!

      @vulcantunes4776 Před 6 lety +5

      Yep, same here. Ivan's flash upgrade resulted in night and day performance improvements. Best part is he really takes all the time you need when talking to him over the phone. The only bummer is going without the bike for a week...but I'd totally spend that money all over again...every time. Engine heat was probably my biggest reason, but for sure being able to put on aftermarket pipes without decel pops was a close second. All of the other performance improvments are just gravy in my book.Oh yeah, throttle response and flat throttle control curve, VERY good. Seriously, Ivan knows these ECU's inside and out.If you're reading this comment and you have a Vaquero or Voyager and haven't had Ivan wave his magic wand over your ECU, do it ASAP.

    Me and you worked together on a lot of this stuff over the years in the V Bagger forums. Ivan's flash was by far the best money I spent on my Vaquero. I also have version 2.0 and man my bike runs better than ever.

      @FriedChickenBlowout  Před 6 lety +2

      Hey... Heads up if you didn't see it already, version 3.0 is out from Ivan. My ECU is coming back on Tuesday from the update. I'm unsure if it's really a version 3.0 or if it's a version 2.1... Not sure how much difference it will make. Ivan says he made a lot of small throttle input changes to the tune and also sounded like he perfected the startup.

    Got my 2015 flashed. AMAZING!! Totally different bike. Much more enjoyable, safer ride. No more toying around with throttle & clutch control to try and avoid "popping".
    I found that IVAN's shop was less than an hour from me. Made a 10:00AM appointment and was on my way back home by 11:30AM. And that was with a lot of great conversation and removing my Dobeck tuner from the bike. This is a no brainer. FYI, I have the Cobra slip-on's and a K&N filter. Not a complete intake. My bike runs FANTASTIC!

    I have a 2014 Kawasaki Nomad 1700 with 164,000km on it so far. It has run great from the factory. No problems in the heat (New Mexico 44degrees Celsius) or in the cold (been riding in -5degrees Celsius) and no problems at altitude (Bear tooth pass). Not one problem with the bike so far. I’m considering trading it for a 2019 Vaquero and I’m supprised to hear of people’s issues with the motor. My buddy has a 2014 Road king with the 103ci and he can’t keep up with me. My bike pulls great from idle right up to 190KPH. Most reliable bike I’ve ever had. Ride safe 😄

  • @jag1963
    @jag1963 Před 2 lety

    Add my 2 cents here. Just had my new 2021 Vaquero flashed by Ivan. What a difference it makes to the bike. It's cooler, Smoother no poping on decel. However here's a tip and I think it's really noteworthy because I had to ring Ivan to find this out and it's fixed my issue. After putting your flashed ECU back into the bike start it up and do not blip the throttle. Let it come up to temperature fully without ever revving it and cycle the cooling fan a couple of times then shut it off and walk away from it for three hours allowing it to fully cool down. When you come back to it again start it again without touching the throttle and let it come up to temps again. before shutting it down again.Thats it you are done. It allows the ECU to learn the correct idle postion. These are Ivans words not mine. When I first got it back I fitted it, Started the bike up and within a few minutes I was riding it. It was better but when I closed the throttle it was taking 5 or 6 seconds to come back to idle. I rang Ivans who was super helpful and he told me what I've just told you. Did that and the bike is now performing as it should. I've got fewer than 40 miles on this bike since the Ivans flash and already I can tell you that it's night and day over Kawasaki factory mapping. It's so worth the money it's the single biggest improvment you can do to this bike. Also i am a complete noob when it comes to anything mechanical yet it was a breeze. Oh and unplug your O2 sensor. Remove the right side panel and find the sensor plugged into exhaust. trace the lead up to the plug unplug it and zip tie it or remove it from the exhaust and stick a bolt with thread matching into the hole from where it came. Simples.

    It's simultaneously amazing and disappointing that Kaw would release this bike/engine into production with such a bad air/fuel/timing curve and that they have continued to produce it with this issue for 10+ years without fixing it. I'm guessing that Ivan's wizardry has helped Kaw to sell a whole bunch more of these bikes than they would otherwise, based on all of the reports of terribly lean and high engine temp conditions on brand new bikes. Kaw must have heard about this from owners long ago, so the fact that they've done nothing to alleviate it (to my knowledge) is beyond pathetic. I have to imagine that there are thousands of these engines out there that don't have Ivan's or similar tune and that are literally self destructing as they're ridden, especially in hot ambient temps. I never imagined that a Japanese company like Kaw with so many years of solid quality reputation in many different industries would allow this to happen and to continue.

I have had many .. bikes and currently own a 6th gen vfr wich is delicious to ride although a little less wind flow would be nice but other than that it's so perfect. I was looking at these and am really pretty disappointed to hear such a great looking bike that is not cheap in price has soo many issues I live in Texas and most of my riding is commuting and these heat problems etc are a concern and I read the top end is 100 that is sad why even put so many cc if you can't use them these manufacturers get caught up in a displacement race and don't offer nothing with it except bragging rights I had cbr1100 xx in 1997 and it would do 185 out of the box now you have a 1700 that tops out at 100 what is that about. Great video series - I worked at Roaring Toyz CNC machining and now teach CNC Machining for our county tech school. I have a 2015 Vaquero ABS with O2. I had seen the RT custom bike at the shop 5 years ago and always liked it. i was a Road glide owner and am a ZX14 drag racer. Anyway when I got the bike June 2015 I brought up north to NH and I noticed it did not run well all the time - seemed lean and always ran hot. Got back to the shop and left it with the RT mechanics and we put on Freedom pipes, and RT air cleaner and PC-V. Used a Vulcan map from PC just for starters - did not run bad. I couldn't wait for dyno session so I installed auto tune. A little better. But when it got heat soaked it started to run bad at lower TPS and RPM. I then manually fixed settings in those areas and disconnected AT. ran better but it still would decel pop and do that heat soak thing again but less often. I had got the C3 mobile app with the cable and did a quick fix but that app only does what an old PC-III did - you could n't change cells. So I'm listening to you plus I saw the thumbs up on Vulcan baggers. I talked to Ivan and they do it same day and I going with that. now............ thks

I have not done an Ivan ECU flash and further, I have not installed an aftermarket air intake (i.e. BAK "Straight Six" or "Kuryakyn" Intake" RH Side). I have also not gone down the fuel delivery tuner route (i.e. Cobra Fi2000 PowrPro w/CVT). Question is should I just go with a flash w/Ivan and call it good? I am interested in better performance, higher top end, better mileage, less crackling/popping on deaccel. Thanks!

      I got the flash with the very first wave of people years ago. I did keep having to run it for that version and the next version because I had to tune the startup zone to keep the bike running when cold at my altitude. He got complains and fixed it for version 3. At that point I zeroed out the map and run it without issues. The. I updated to version 4 and pulled the PCV out of the bike. The only issue with version 4 was that Ivan either richened up the WO throttle or retarded the timing some from version 3. This was done because some bikes were pinging and people complained. My bike never pinged. Unfortunately, this resulted in a loss of overall power at WO throttle. However, this version also improved throttle response at low speeds and overall ride ability around town. I never tried to mess with version 4 with the PCV for WO throttle because I had pulled it out of the bike before I realized there was a reduction in power.

      No idea... The feedback I had seen from anyone that had done internal engine work, was that they suffered a catastrophic failure in the transmission. At one point Thunder Manufacturing had a big bore kit, but I think they went out of business. I think the goal with these bikes is to run the tune as hot as possible, you can have some conversations with Ivan and see if he would give you more timing advance. I understand he backed some out of the latest tune because some guys had pinging issues, I never did have any pinging, but you can think there is some based on the air intake noise that exists at lower RPM under heavy throttle.

    • @FriedChickenBlowout
      @FriedChickenBlowout  Před 7 lety

      Lamont B make sure your PCV map is zeroed out below 3500. If you're adding fuel at low RPM especially around idle that could be killing the engine, I had that issue with mine when I was messing with the low end RPM range trying to improve things. Since you've already had it flashed it won't hurt to get the update.
      Once you do the update you won't need the PCV for anything.

    Wow. I wanted to love these bikes, but after test driving the Vaquero, I decided to pass on it because of the lack of power overall, and power delivery. • @FriedChickenBlowout
      @FriedChickenBlowout  Před 6 lety

      Ivan's work is a game changer for this bike. The Stratoliner Deluxe was my top choice when I went looking, but there was none of them in my price range 3 years ago, so I ended up with the Vaquero. Was ready to sell it before Ivan came out with his flash. There's no way to unf*#k the poor throttle response and poor power with using an external tuner. Ivan unleashes the power and control in this bike. It pulls all the way to redline and I'm pretty sure it would take a Stratoliner becuase of the top end power. The Stratoliner still makes better low end torque, but my ECU is coming back from Ivan today again, for the 3rd update, which should address some more low end power.
      Make sure you look up Ivan, he has a flash for your Stratoliner as well as an intake mod.

    I've been following reviews on Ivan's flash, and the one issue I have reservations about is minimum recommended octane requirements... Does your bike have detonation or per-ignition at all now (sounds like pinging, knocking on heavy throttle application, especially at lower rpm)? If not, what octane fuel do you run in your bike? Where I live it's hard to find 91 premium and I have to settle for 89 or even 87, so will I need to carry and use octane booster to keep from having detonation?

    • @FriedChickenBlowout
      @FriedChickenBlowout  Před 7 lety +1

      Mark Fairchild sorry for the delay... I've never had the bike ping, even when I lug the engine in the wrong gear. This was the same before and after the flash. I used to run 89 but now I pretty much only run 91. But on a recent trip all I could find was 87 so I filled it up with that and didn't have any issues. From what I hear some bikes are more particular than others. You can always keep a small bottle of octane boost with you on a trip if you're afraid you won't find super while away from home. I ran into that in Iowa last year where a station I pulled up at only had 85 E15 which was really weird to find. I tossed in my backup fuel can that I take on big trips and went to the next station 20 miles away that had normal gas.
