      We prefer to run full ballast - just as you would for a wakesurf session. It gives us big wave. The extra 'bonus' benefit is that when you do a 2nd to 1st wave transfer - that first wave is set up for you to rip. It's a nice way to put variety in your run so you develop different skill sets and balance on the foil.

    Seeing this long after you posted. We finally bought our Slingshot Hoverglide Foil Wake V3 package. We have a 2003 Centurion Sport Bowrider direct drive. We’ve been wakesurfing for years with just 800 pounds ballast. Kids can ride the wave with zero ballast. I weigh 197 pounds. Board comes with Gamma 68cm front wing. Think we’re good?

      NO! 68cm at 197lb is going to be too limiting for you. If you stay with Slingshot - I'd recommend you go Hover Glide 84 to give you more options on the second wave etc.
      If you can swing it -- the best foil for you would be the Armstrong HS1550V2 foil kit. Call us if you'd like to discuss (909) 698-0401.

    Love the videos! I’m on day 5 with my Slingshot f wake. I have the gamma 68 w/ a 61 cm mast. Day 1-2 I got used to the wing. Day 3 was just trying to stay up for long stretches. Yesterday and today was more getting used to carve back and forth.. all with a long line. First question.. why do I lift up and slam down on the water each time I cross the wake? I basically have to drop the board back on the water to cross. Secondly, I started riding at 8.5 and feel better at 9.3. Is there a specific speed I should get used to before I start trying to drop the line? Thanks! I’m so addicted. We live on a lake and I have all the toys. NOTHING compares to this! BTW I’m riding behind a B-52 and I’m not putting any lbs in the ballast at this time. I’m pretty much the only one out here with a foil.. it’s epic!

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Michael - That is fantastic! Way to go. From what I can glean from the above, I think the lift up and slam has less to do with crossing the wake and more to do with your ability to control height. Here's my suggestion:
      1) Go outside of the wake in the smooth water -- elevate, then touch down the board -- repeat.
      2) outside of the wake hold a consistent height -- whether you hit waves from other boats etc...try to do it where your board doesn't hit the water.
      3) I'm guessing it rises up or gives you issues when you go through the main turbulence of the wake. Bend your knees - "soft knees" to help absorb any turbulence while maintaining a very neutral stance.
      The source of rise up/slam down is typically either a rise up and breach (foil breaks the surface) which is followed by a quick descent into the water :-) or just a full out back foot too much pressure. Fly that board a bit lower, soft knees crossing the wakes.
      Many people struggle on the second wake with dropping the rope. Often times it's from coming over the top of the wave and into the second wave. Start at the bottom, in the trought and work your way up.
      I'd recommend that you try to drop the rope on your natural side, find the power point of the wave etc before doing transfers.
      Your speed seems slow. We ride at 11.2. Fill those ballast when you're ready and go at the same speed that you wakesurf at. It's so great to hear that you're having fun. Foiling really is a game changer and we're stoked to hear you're getting into it. Hopefully you subscribed to our channel and began to follow us on Instagram @halflifet.5 Send us some pics - we'd love to feature you.

    Great video thanks but you do talk a lot about the bubble line and I’m not sure where that was. Is it the line at the crest of the wave or the line running directly back from the boat? There are bubbles everywhere. Also, at which point did you swap the foil from the 84cm to the smaller foil?

    • @sirkildalot8409
      @sirkildalot8409 Před 5 lety

      Also, how was the foil set up? Was it with the mast in the forward or rear position in the fuse?

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  Před 5 lety

      Hi Sirk! Hope that’s ok for shortening! Sorry for the confusion. The bubble line is the line created by the first wake. If you sit in the boat and look back you’ll see a natural line in the water where ‘white’ (what I call bubble line) meets clean water. Make sense? The 84cm Slingshot mounts in the ‘B’ position. We have the foil all the way back in the mounting box.

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  Před 4 lety +2

      Hi Carson -- Thank you for checking out our videos. What type of boat are you behind? It makes a lot of difference. Please shoot us a message and I may adjust our response. It all depends. Here's the pros and cons:
      - First Wave: Pros - plenty of power in the wave and you don't have to 'search' for it. It's very visually apparent. Your starting pocket can be similar to that of wake surf which a lot of people have experience with. Cons - Steepness of the wave and a beginner tendency to shoot to the top, breach, and fall.
      - Second Wave: Pros - more gentle falls, less steepness to the wave, tends to happen 'slower'. Cons - MUCH more difficult to visually see and find the wave. It actually takes a bit more skill to maintain on foil for a smaller wave than it does on a larger wave (within reason of course).
      All of this said - I started foiling on a Slingshot Gamma 68cm. The best wave before I knew how to ride it efficiently was the first wave. Let us know what foil setup you're on and the boat your behind and we'll true up our recommendation. If you haven't yet - we'd really appreciate it if you would subscribe to our CZcams channel. Thanks Carson!

      I'm 200 lbs riding on an infinity 76 behind a Malibu Sunsetter classic direct drive ski type boat. Even with no weight in the boat it seems that the second wave has the power to hold me in the pocket so far, I just need to get better at staying there. Finding the wave hasn't seemed to be a problem for me but staying on it is difficult. I haven't tried the first wave yet, my next time out I'll give it a try if you think it makes more sense.

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  Před 4 lety +2

      @@carsonking3798 Hey Carson! I'd say it's always worth experimenting. In my Malibu Sunsetter Lxi - it's ALL about the second wave. That's great to hear that you're able to find the wave without a problem. What I mean by 'finding' is slacking the rope, dropping the rope, and sustaining based upon visual clues. You'll want to study the wave from the boat and then envision it when you're on the wave. If your Sunsetter is like mine - the 'bubble line' is about the center of the power zone. You confidently have 2-3 feet either side. When you shoot down the wave face you can sometimes get out in front of the wave. In this case turn towards the bubble line to recover your power/speed. Make sense? Often times people will have the tip of their board aimed too far outside of the wake and just 'slip' out of the wave. Be sure to point your board tip toward the back corner of the swim step to help orient you to how to regain speed. Make sense? I would still encourage you to try out the first wave - easy to shorten the rope and you may find a simpler dynamic to drop the rope....my hunch is that you'll continue to like the 2nd wave better but there's only one way to find out!

    • @carsonking3798
      @carsonking3798 Před 4 lety +1

      Yes that all makes sense. I will probably try out the front wave just to see but right now I think I feel more comfortable with the smooth glassy water further back. My next session will only be #3 so the bigger wave and the turbulent water still scare me a bit. I'm having a blast figuring this thing out!

    Hey, I reached out to you guys recently.. I'm currently riding a 76cm with 61cm mast.. wireless and carving the first wave with no problem.. Only tried the 2nd wave once and struggled going wireless. I'm 6'1 228lbs and have been trying to get somebody to sell me a Hover Glide FSUP V3 and exchange the 84cm with a 99cm to complete the package deal.. Nobody is willing to do this or they tell me the 99cm is out of stock.. At this point I think I will just buy the FSUP V3 with the 84cm... and eventually just buy the 99cm wing separately.. I want to do wake transfers on the 2nd wave and feel the larger wing of the 84 or 99 will help me do this vs. my current 76cm set up.. Thoughts? The 76Cm is a blast.. I have no problem with it even @ my weight but feel I would get better pump results from a larger wing.
    Riding behind a V-Drive Wakeboard/Surf boat so the wave isn't the problem.. and speed is about 10.5mph Thanks for the help

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Colosufer! Great to hear from you again. Well done on the first wave carving! Once you do that you're ready to open up the possibilities of the second wave. The 99cm is indeed out of stock unfortunately. So that leaves you with the decision to move forward with the 84cm and then get a 99cm down the road. You may want to ping Slingshot on timing -- www.slingshotsports.com/slingshot-contact-us.
      If you have plenty of wave and solid technique, I do believe the 84cm will work for you. That said....99cm is a safer bet. At your size and with a desire to do wave transfers, I recommend the 71cm mast. Ride it high when initiating the transfer.
      I'd love to see some footage of you on the 2nd wave with the 76cm to see what the cause of challenge is. The 84cm has a lot more glide than the 76cm. For example, on my tournament ski boat - the 84cm is no problem on a very small wake. At 178lb the 76cm was a challenge for long sustained rides.
      Final recommendation: Go with the 84cm........but don't be mad at us if you end up preferring the 99cm. Both should work.
