- Hi everyone. Here at long last is another What If video, this time trying to answer the question: What If Paul McGann Was In Series 1?

I always felt they should have had McGann guest as The Doctor during one of the "Doctor lite" episodes where the companion works with the Eighth Doctor while the current Doctor is off screen for the episode.

I’ve always wanted the master to regenerate into Paul Mcgann and pretend to be the doctor ruining his reputation. I know He could do it amazingly cause he played the master in the audio fantastically.

If Tennent can "get his face back" as 14, then logically McGann's 8th could have regenerated into the War Doctor (Hurt) until that business was over with and then BACK into McGann (still 8th? 9th?) and thus appear in the first series.
War Doctor did not exist in the mind of RTD at this point and the intent was always that 8 fought in the Time War and then regenerated into 9.
@@vishaansingh1019with all due respect to John Hurt and his fans, I'd actually rather they had brought 8 in to fill that role in the plot of that special. Would have been more respectful to Paul's role in the lineage.
@@TammyBeth1015 agreed. The War Doctor idea was totally pointless to me and still even to this day it doesn't feel like the show or the BBC doesn't properly acknowledge McGann's Doctor. He would've been terrific as the War Doctor. Seeing him go from a sweet and hopeful guy to a angry man forced to become a soldier by adapting to the war he could not escape from. This actually mirrors what many soldiers went through in history. They don't just drink potions and magically become a warrior which is why the War Doctor to me is a very milk and bread (simple) idea with very few pros.
@@adisassy4579 Moffat's statement that he needed John Hurt because he "just couldn't imagine the 8th Doctor committing genocide" is utterly ridiculous especially given Lucie Miller/To the Death had already been released. The Dark Eyes saga had already begun with McGann's Doctor donning a simpler contemporary look of jeans and a plain t-shirt with a leather coat, obviously paving the way to the eventual 9th Doctor. Big Finish had been edging closer to covering the Time War and alluded to its events in the Gallifrey series even prior to Big Finish gaining the license for 2005 era Who. Then it's all thrown in the garbage for the 50th anniversary when Moffat decides to add a new John Hurt incarnation and show 8 in a weathered version of his original style clothing when he regenerates. Now there's just a totally random era of the 8th Doctor's adventures where it appears he has a midlife crisis and briefly wears leather jackets
When I was younger I had a head cannon that Paul’s doctor became the war doctor in his old age

Great video as always!!! Id personally go with mcgann doing 3 seasons and had him exit in the finale with the Master. I dont know why but i just always felt the story could have worked well as a regeneration story as well had that route been explored.
(sorry this started as a simple reply but me being me rewrote and made a Timeline)
1996 (8th Doctor Paul Mcgann age 37 does the Doctor Who Film)
2005 (8th Doctor Paul Mcgann age 46 does Series 1 but this time with a kiss and speech Rose releases the power herself)
2006 (8th Doctor Paul Mcgann age 47 does Series 2 but no new me stuff and Christmas Invasion is switched with a more depressing The Next Doctor)
2007 (8th Doctor Paul Mcgann age 48 does Series 3 up till Utopia where this time the Master shoots him as he locks the Tardis door meaning the Doctor's pleading for the Master as their both dying)
(then in the teleport scene we see a golden glow)
2007 (9th Doctor David Tennant age 36 does Sound of the Drums and Last of the Time Lords meaning in his first appearance we see the wit, smarts, anger and whimsical-ness of Tennant all across 2 Episodes)
( All before ending it with Runaway Bride Instead of Voyage of the Damned)
(Side note is for all of Sound of the Drums and 90% of Last of the Time Lords David Tennant is wearing Paul's outfit but when we cut to 9 saying bye to Jack and Martha and now Donna appearing on the Tardis instead of a Titanic crash Davids wearing the Suit, Converse and Coat)
2008 (9th Doctor David Tennant age 37 does Series 4 but this time instead of The Next Doctor we end it with Voyage of the Damned)
2009 (9th Doctor David Tennant age 38 we get the other 4 Tennant Specials but this time David runs off so he doesn't have to save Wilf and ends crashing the Tardis)
(Now Because originally David did the role for as long as he could he'd still do that here but instead of being essentially fresh out of Russel's era ending at Russel's end possibly going into Steven's first he would now be at the end of Russel's Era and be going into Moffat's who would want his own Doctor but would end Tennant's run at the half way mark)
(that's my thoughts on it at least)
2010 (9th Doctor David Tennant age 39 does Series 5 but no new me stuff)
2011 (9th Doctor David Tennant age 40 does Series 6)
2012 (9th Doctor David Tennant age 41 does Series 7)
2013 (9th Doctor David Tennant age 42 does Series 7 but this time Time of the Doctor is switched with a non Regeneration story fun Christmas Special but we know the Doctor's death comes soon)
2014 (9th Doctor David Tennant age 43 does Series 8 but instead of the one we got it's a wrap up of Moffat's Era+Missy ending with Time of the Doctor just no new Regeneration's and slightly different)
then Series 9-10-11 is just our Series 8-9-10 with 10th Doctor Peter Capaldi going from 2015-2017
side note though Missy would be wearing a perception filter in this version of Series 9's Deep Breath/Dark Water/Death in Heaven until the end of the Dark Water explaining how the Doctor doesn't recognize her despite meeting her as Tennant in Series 8

Edit=there would be a 5 minute short posted on the Doctor Who CZcams Channel of Tennant going back to save Wilf to the confusion of the soldier who just saw him leave before going on a goodbye trip to all the RTD Companions (all filmed back in 2009 for when his Regeneration did role around) before 9's Regeneration as his age was restored
then in Sarah Jane's adventures+RTD+Moffat they would confirm he'd visit all his companions ever before going to give future Clara the Phone Call and say bye to Clara one last time
@vinniequick I really liked that vinnie. Yeah honestly if tennant had all the time in the world he probably would have done 4 to 5 full seasons. In terms of utopia being used as mcganns end that would be a hell of a twist especially to those that have not experienced regeneration. I personally though would have had mcgann end it in episode 13 still so I was picturing the same thing occurs where the doctor is incapacitated due to rapid age/being held hostage but he gets healed but instead of doing the whole magical hovering thing he uses his regeneration energy to heal himself. Then either 1 of 1 things could happen you either have it be when mcgann changes to tennant then and there and a newly regenerated doctor fights off a visibly shocked master or it turns in to mcganns last stand. Like I could see a big change where maybe the masters wife shoots the doctor causing mcgann to regenerate because she is too far gone to be redeemed instead of what we saw in real life. Then you could have tennant change but the master within the shock of everything escapes preparing to take on the new doctor down the line!

you have no idea just how much i would loved to have seen this happen, Paul is such a great Doctor he would have rocked the return of DW, such a shame he was never given the chance :(
The approach to Series 1 of the revival was the distance themselves from continuity overload as much as they possibly could, both to bring in new viewers, and so that if it turned out shit, they could write it off as a failed reboot. If they had cast McGann, they likely felt that public reaction would have been "Oh, I didn't watch the TV movie, I won't understand this." 9 was also meant to be a more informal character that distanced himself from the previous patrician character of the Doctor after his experience in the War. McGann does not have that vibe.
Your idea of the 8th Doctor being a happy go-lucky adventurer turned hardened war veteran, actually happened in Doctor Who's Cancelled Years! But instead of the 8th Doctor, it was the 10th Doctor who was not played by David Tennant in the series!!

Oh yeah I know what you're on about. It's one of the other fan attempts at guessing what could've happened had the show not been cancelled in 1989. I haven't ever watched it actually, so any similarity is unintentional I assure you. I just know of it from It's wiki, which has appeared sometimes when I've been researching for my own take on what if the show never ended in 1989. :)
@@BillWhovian I'm talking about Optical Specter's series, where the 10th Doctor was played by Aiden Gillian. The Great Time War broke out during his tenure, & he ran from it only to fight in it anyway! I think he died in the end, but then regenerated into the 11th Doctor played by Liam Cunningham & not Matt Smith!

I think they should just do a series eight doctor do a whole season or even more if he's popular use some of the plots from the novels and from the audio stories which would make it easier to get the stuff on screen and it would give us a chance to see what Paul McGann would do with the role. I mean you could even tell it in flashbacks if you wanted to
I would love to see this timeline.
I could also see RTD wanting to have a proper transition from old who to new who and so in this world the 8th is seen not only as a classic doctor, but a new who doctor or the bridging doctor.
Paul McGann would being good way to start the new who seasons and Paul McGann would made more sense to end the time war as we never really got to know his doctor fully
I always felt that they should have kept McGann, given his obvious commitment to the role, but - ignore the telemovie. I actually would have brought McCoy back for a multi-Doctor story in the 2nd season, and it would have ended with 7 regenerating into 8... reintroducing the concept of regeneration to the new audience, for when McGann then departed 1-2 seasons later.
I don't really like the idea of ignoring the TV Movie personally
@@BillWhovian I enjoyed it at the time, but given the reports that Phil S' grand plan was to remake a bunch of classic episodes... I think we ultimately dodged a bullet not going to series, as much as I wanted it to happen back in 1996. McGann was the best thing about the telemovie, and I desperately felt he was wronged by casting Eccelston, but I always felt that by that point in time, the tv movie was essentially forgotten by the public, so ignoring it could have been pretty easy.
@johnlarro6872 That wasn't what would've happened had the TV Movie been a success. That's a common misconception, based on the fact that a bible was made by John Leekley that had remakes of past episodes. They would've done completely new episodes in actuality. The remakes aspect was just an early part of it that got abandoned when everyone didn't like Leekley's bible. I'm pretty sure that's correct anyway
Paul should have started the first revival series.

I've watched this video so many times and each time I watch it, I'm just thinking this is so good, why does this make so much sense, and this is... FANTASTIC... I really enjoyed this What If scenario and actually wanted to see Paul in a full run as the 8th Doctor. As well, the 10th being the 9th Doctor is very weird, but weirdness is fun. I hope you keep up the good work on your videos, wish more people will see your hard work. As, one last thing, "What if The Master was the timeless child?"

@@BillWhovian Wise and noble. I think your what-if scenarios and your content should be looked at more on the same level as other big doctor who fan CZcams channels. It a wacky idea but love it if one day, you could get some popular doctor who fan CZcams channels, like Nerd Den, Tharries and such much more, to be in your video as a guest star to be a role for the What if scenario or maybe a guest narrator like whoculture. I don't know but I hope one day, your content will get the respect and love that me and your subscribers give to you, but such much more.
How about this: Series One of the revival would have McGann's Doctor paired with Grace from the tv-movie, or a companion from the Big Finish audio stories (which I have not listened to nor know anything about), or a completely different companion. That companion would be jettisoned at the end of Series One, and Series Two would introduce Rose Tyler and the Bad Wolf arc, and at the end of which, McGann's Doctor dies saving Rose from the Tardis energy exactly how Eccelston did.
From there he regenerates into Tennant's now-9th Doctor. He'd be followed by Matt Smith's 10th Doctor, Peter Capaldi's 11th Doctor, and THEN he'd regenerate into 12, PLAYED BY CHRISTOPHER ECCELSTON. They'd still have the Timeless Child arc, which would show earlier incarnations of the Doctor played by Jo Martin and JOHN HURT. However, if you're think I'm trying to erase Jodi Whitaker's Doctor, you're wrong. She'd be the next Doctor (though in this scenario, Chibnall would not be showrunner).
By introducing lore that the Doctor had a female incarnation in the past while currently a male Doctor, the show would not be undercutting Jodi's role as the first female Doctor. She would instead be the first female CONTEMPORARY Doctor, who's adventures we'd see in full, unlike Jo Martin and John Hurt's Doctors.
I don't think they'd have Grace from the TV Movie, as it wouldn't make Series 1 as accessible for new viewers. And they wouldn't be able to use her due to rights issues I believe anyway. Nice idea beyond that though 👍

In this reality I can see The War Doctor being workable because as the High Council of Time Lords could have gifted the Valeyard with a regeneration cycle but on the condition conscription and Hurt is just a different incarnation of the Valeyard

12:04 I was about to say that wouldn’t it be after Peter Capaldi because the regeneration in Stolen Earth would still happen, but I realized that it wouldn’t, because he wouldn’t have the hand because in the christamas invasion he would still be 8, so he wouldn’t have the regeneration energy to heal when his hand was cut off, so I guess it would have been cut off, unless he just would’ve just had one hand in series 2, (and the dalek shooting him would just make Tennant, Matt smith I suppose anyway) Idk lol it’s all very interesting to think about, and how much would have been effected and changed. And it would be interesting returning to Donna in the end of time after a full series away from her, too. Really great video, good job!

Love this video but personally if mcgann had both s1 and 2 then tennant 3 , 4 and 5, id have him be with moffat for series 5 with amy and rory rather than christina , series 5 would still be in 2010 , tennant still have the 2009 specials ,s3 and 4 with RTD then his last with moffats first series . Where tennant leaves in the big bang .
Otherwise do what you said with planet of the dead as a series 5 opener but end of time p1 and 2 as the series finale , without a christmas or new years special.

I wanted McGann's Eighth Doctor to be in series one, even though I liked Eccleston. I think the stories would have been very different with the Eighth Doctor. The EastEnders in space vibe wouldn't suit McGann's Doctor . Russell would have taken more inspiration from the BBC Eighth Doctor novels. Quite possibly The Burning by Justin Richards where the Eighth Doctor has memory loss, but gradually starts to get it back. A good way to start a new TV era just as it was a new start for the BBC books era of the Eighth Doctor novels.
I think describing the first Russell T Davies as "EastEnders in space" is a bit harsh. I don't really think Russell would want to take inspiration from some books that only some fans would've been aware of. It doesn't really make sense. He went with what he did so as to help the show appeal to the casual viewing audience. Basing his entire approach on some EDA's would go completely against that.

I think we'd probably go straight to Tennant to be Honest and he'd become the 9th. I think he'd be only in 1 series as like you say I think RTD would want to cast his own doctor and Tennant was his first choice apparently but unable in 2005.

I was pondering if the Fugitive Doctor would be considered as the Timewar Doctor. If the movie was still as is, where at the sisterhood of Kahn still made him regenerate into her, and a catastrophic event happened, that made her go to earth use the fob watch, and when she is restored, explain why both don't remember each other leaving once the emergency was over, the sisterhood to change her back or something making the regeneration go backwards like with when the Master messed with it. If you remember in the events where the War Doctor was referred to as not signing up for this.

I wouldn't say it would be better, as Series 1 was pretty amazing anyway. But it is always interesting to speculate about these alternate scenarios. :)
I think the 8th doctor would still wear his night of the doctor look in series
I don't think so. I went with the Dark Eyes look because it resembles 9's outfit. And since Russell would probably have 8 go on 9's character arc, it would've made more sense for 8's costume to reflect that. Also, the Dark Eyes look works better for a revival anyway, as the Night of the Doctor look is still very much evoking the Classic Series' feel of Doctor's outfits.
Couldn't the Dark eyes Sonic also take the place of John hurts sonic screwdriver character options released as a toy, we got for the non what if 50th episode.
Plus if the new 9th doctor *David Tennant* still uses cannon sonic David had in the non what if time line what would mean we would get two releases of the same sonic toy just with diffrent handle and updated text on the packaging
So basically have McGann use the Dark Eyes sonic for the Day of the Doctor? If so, I guess you could do that, although I don't see why the War Doctor’s sonic would need replacing personally.
And yes, there would indeed be two toys for the Eccleston and Tennant sonic (or McGann and Tennant sonic as it would be in this timeline). They released multiple versions of it in our timeline, so I don't see why it would be any different in this alternate scenario.

really wish he had been Paul mcgann was robbed of having a series with his doctor twice back in 1996 and 2005 and it would've felt like a proper continuation of where the show left off with the tv movie.
In this timeline, I wonder how rose would of reacted in the stolen earth to it being David Tennant instead of Paul mcgann when she returns
Oh yeah that would’ve been a pretty dramatic moment. Rose would see the TARDIS and run towards it, only for Tennant to step out and Rose would be like "Who are you?" Jack would’ve been able to explain regeneration to her though. :)
Absolutely no disrespect to him ,BBC treated him shambling and appalling. However, Chris did a fantastic job .The very least they can do is for him to do a spin-off
