Great video, I have a 2018 Insignia B with this engine and have the dreaded rattle every now and again on startup.
It’s on finance which is at the half way point at the end of the year so I am either going to move it on or will hit you up if I decide to keep it, have kept the oil changes very regular since I have had it.

Useful tip to wind in the hex shaft to free off the top timing cover. IMPORTANTLY there is a m8 tapping on the opposite end, it is does not go through into the housing. Wind in a bolt and it pushes that end out as well. Without it there is a high risk of flexing the cover and cracking it....

Neat job! Do u recommend a certain brand for chain? my local garage suggests I get him FEBI BILSTEIN or FAI, any suggestions?

Your video confirmed that if I order the tensioner from Europe, I would get the included gasket. These engines are in Chevy Equinox's in North America. The gasket or updated tensioner with gasket does not exist here and my GM dealer says "that rattle is normal", even though it sounds like I am shaking a jar full of marbles at startup. To save my car, I am paying out of pocket (7 hrs labour, $500CAD in parts, I am supplying the gasket and tensioner) for the tensioner gasket to be installed for a 2019 that is still under powertrain warranty (90,000kms).

It's a stupid design. Not much of a job to replace the tensioner with the gasket, personally they should have recalled it.

  • @Roverturbo

I will agree on the fact that its not a nice job, ive done it myself and have a video on my channel. Its interesting they seem to have updated a few things on the later engines, for one being the o rings on the timing cover, not silicone. Experience now tells me that over regular oil changes are a must, with 6-8k mile oil changes on ours, its now over 180k miles and still going strong.

Hi baz, good to see professional workmanship. Wish you were local to me. Just had main rattle like hell the other nite then got warning "oil pressure low switch engine off" lucky i was only 200yards from home switched off engine immediately and rolled down hill into driveway. Told by Vauxhall £160 to diagnose fault. Been told by another garage sometime parts off the tensioner breaks off and block oil pump pick up. Any suggestions would be helpful and price to replace chain. Thks

Hello baz,I believe this is the infamous tensioner chain rattle 1.6 cdti from opel?
We have the same engine but in a astra k.
Bought it second hand with 20 000km on it.
Started to rattle shortly after, couple of months. Since then not only rattles on start-up but also while driving. At certain rpm its like stones on the engine.
I agree that the oil flows back when standstill. But while running oil pressure should be constant?
I believe there are many 1.6cdti in UK.
    How common is this issue?
Is everything solved with the magic gasket. I read on many forums after a while it rattles again even with that gasket?
Should have recalled this I think from opel. But no garage, dealer of even opel Belgium want to help me with this issue. I wrote letters to the main dealer here but only want to replace the whole timing at my own expense WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY IT'S SOLVES THE PROBLEM??
I'm not spending 2500 € on this job without any warranty. Car has 110 000km now

    • @bazmeredith
      @bazmeredith  Před 4 měsíci

If it's caught in time it will be fine, it's when they are left until last min or maybe put off by the repair cost, what happens is that the chain stretches and the tensioner is pushed beyond it's limits and ends up taking the guides out as well... This car was left a little to late but no to late that there was no damage done

@@allthingsadventurous6568 it's just a poor design of the tensioner which allows the chain to flap about and stretch however a new tensioner is upgraded

The problem is in the chain tensioner, which does not throw enough oil on the chain itself and the guide. They solved it by coming up with a seal that prevents the oil from leaking to the bottom of the engine. But I don't understand why they didn't redesigned the tensioner itself with a hole in it that would allow the oil pump to build up pressure and spray the chain through that hole? There is a video on YT of 2 Ukrainians how they solved it permanently, not some temporary solution with gasket and the problem comes back in a couple of days?
