Instagram ► / kevins_european_garage This is A DIY video on how to change a steering rack on a 996 Carrera 2 the C4 model will be different this is also the same for a 986 Boxster.
you were lucky getting the rack flexible pressure lines out. in cold wet rust belt climates those pipes jam in there solid often damaging the pipes getting them out. They are eye watering expensive to replace. great vid.
Thanks for watching. I’ve been pretty lucky working on this car everything has been coming apart without giving me a hard time. My 996 was definitely garaged and not driven in the winter for sure. I’ll take it out in the winter but only after it has finished snowing and some rain has wash away the salt.
Thanks for posting, this helped me recently when I changed my rack. Two comments I have: -The larger plastic cap at the input gear has a rivet that lines up with a boss on the rack housing when it's centered. When you transfer this cap over make sure your new rack is centered when you line this up with the boss. This helps when aligning the car later because you can make sure the rack is centered using that rivet and boss. -I didn't need to drop my subframe. I rotated the rack down and back and was able to squeeze the coolant hose out of the way to get the rack out. Nothing wrong with dropping your subframe though if you wanted to.
Nice work Kevin, I have been learning a lot from your videos. I just did the starter, starter cable, spark plugs and fister mod. So much fun working on these
Enjoyed watching that. Good to see how its done , could you have put the shaft back on before bolting the rack back up to the subframe maybe? Anyway, strangely compelling viewing :-) thanks
Thanks for watching. I had loosely put in the bolts to hold the rack and then tried to put the shaft back the gear without much success. I thought having a little movement might help but I was wrong . I wasn’t able to go that shaft onto the gear until the whole rack and subframe were completely tight. That shaft connecting to the gear take a lot of effort to push down.
Nice Job! Dumb question for you. What is the secret to getting those darn tabs that hold the big plastic cover on the bottom of the car? I have just been prying them out, but I know that isn't correct. Are you working the tab with one screwdriver and then prying with the other?
Thanks for watching. Sometimes I have to use two screw drivers to take them off. I wish I could insert a pic in here cause that would make it easy. What I do is take a pic of the clip up it on my Instagram account. That’s the easiest way for me to explain
@@KevinsEuropeanGarage Thank you Kevin very much for the reply. I have enjoyed your videos and they have helped me out doing control arms and tie rods. Keep up the good work.
It takes only one minute to take the two plastic nuts off the back to remove the under pan completely. There is no need to take 20 minutes cleaning up oil that could spill from an oil pan that is not secured.
Good video, just be aware of this from the repair manual: CAUTION Danger of damage to property if too much Pentosin CHF 11 S is filled or if it comes in contact with the coolant hoses when topping up or filling in.
@@KevinsEuropeanGarage I'm trying to do the same on my 996tt now. Unfortunately it's even tighter around the steering gear and I cant get anything over the shaft to push it down. What a pain!
It is a pain to get the shaft back on all the way. I ended up reaching above the joint. I couldn’t see what I was grabbing but it felt like a disc on the steering shaft I was able to get enough leverage but I don’t know how little room you have with the diff there. I don’t know if you could reach that high
Dude put some guittar content I'll give you spanish rock songs, you can film yourself just listening to it for the first time and then playing it real quick. do this one first Musica Ligera by Soda Stereo
Thanks for the sub. I changed the rack because the shafted that does the steering rattled in the housing and the seals were starting to leak.. Hope you get your 911 soon
@@KevinsEuropeanGarage Thanks for responding. Do you think the 996 can be a daily driver? Assuming that everything is tip top (no issues and IMS replaced).
Definitely I think it can be done especially a Carrera 4 if you live in an area that gets some snow. Out some snow tires on it and you’ll be just fine.
Thanks for the video! What symptoms did you notice that made you decide to replace the rack? Also, what kind of hose clamp tool did you use to tighten the inner (larger) clamps around the bellows over the tie rod?
My seals started to leak and I had a little play in the shaft. I was having issued with rattles in the front end also. So i decided to replace it before the seals got too bad and to eliminate it as a source of my rattle.
I have a 1999 Porsche 996 that I bought used. The steering feel is numb especially at highway speeds. Will a steering rack replacement give the car more steering feel?
I would makes sure that nothing is worn out front. Check bushings joints etc. Tires have a lot to to do with steering feel. Alignment will also have an effect. It is possible to have a worn steering gear mine had leaks coming from the seals. The main issue was there was play in the horizontal shaft. Thats why i changed it.

Thanks for watching. These cars are definitely fun to work on. I plan on doing the fister mod soon. The factory exhaust is too quiet.
@@KevinsEuropeanGarage I’m sure you’ve heard the reviews. Fister mod blew my mind. It easily doubled the fun of the car.
I have definitely heard the videos and I don’t know why I have waited this long to do it but I’ll have it for spring.
great video, to the point and good camera angles....thanks

2 flat head screwdrivers, one is needed to move the end tab that locks it on

Can I just put this on my Jetta?
