Mariah Carey Speaks On Walter Afanasieff In 2021

  • Mariah gave a wonderful interview to the Questlove Supreme podcast over her Christmas and New Year break. Parts 1 and 2 came to over three hours in length - what a treat! Mariah was asked to comment on her previous working relationship with writing partner Walter Afanasieff. This was very interesting to me because Mariah doesn't often mention him these days after their falling out years back. Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff collaborations were the stuff of dreams; they wrote hits such as All I Want For Christmas Is You, Anytime You Need A Friend, Hero, One Sweet Day and many others. All of that came to end when Mariah left Tommy and Sony in the 90s. Mariah rarely speaks Walter's name so this recent discussion about her time working with him certainly caught my attention!

It's interesting that she says "I wish him well" which has somewhat become part of the Mariah vernacular as a sort of "forgive but don't forget / let go but learn". Loved this analysis and I agree that a Mariah / Walter in-depth discussion would be great with a panel!

Mariah has stated in the 1997 MTV interview “you know when you tell a friend a secret and they blab it to the world”
Mariah wrote “My All” “Fourth Of July” “Butterfly” “Whenever You Call” “Lead The Way” with him during that separation period.
Mariah revealed it to him in the most vulnerable way - her singing and her music.
    Walter knew about her affair.
He knew the real inspiration behind her more profound songwriting.
    More than anyone.
And he carelessly just told Tommy about it.
I get that Tommy had more power than Mariah, but a real friend would keep his integrity and protect you, especially if you’re already having such a difficult time.
Him saying that Mariah is jealous that he worked with other artists is just him projecting - to find something negative about MC.
Babyface, Puffy, Rooney, David Morales, Jermaine are other co-writers of Mariah
that work with many other artists as well.
And Mariah literally don’t give a shit if they do because she knows she’s naturally gifted with songwriting and the melodies that’s revealed to her by the Almighty can never be duplicated or copied.
No one can offer what she has to offer.
    Walter did her dirty.
While she continued to have enormous success without him.
    And he’s bitter about it.
    Mariah can go ~

Mariah’s beef with Walter is simple. He was a musician hired by Sony. She was a singer-songwriter who didn’t play instruments. So, Mariah “wrote” the songs in terms of lyrics & melody, but Walter filled in the gaps to flesh it out to completion. He wanted to be credited as the secret to her success, but he wasn’t. As prolific as he is, Mariah wrote plenty of songs without him including several #1s. If you look at most of Walter’s career without Mariah, it’s mainly producing, not songwriting. It’s the same way Quincy Jones wanted credit for all of Michael Jackson’s success. Same story.

Quincy Jones IS a genius but I think the music business leans itself very much towards greed, poor business practices, and lots of fraudulent or mean activities, because everyone is trying get the biggest chuck of the cake. Mariah gives me the impression that she wants to say “Walter takes to much credit for the things I came up with” but she stops herself, she always says that she comes up with the melodies, lyrics, vocals and Walter just plays the instruments and puts it together, after she okays him to, Especially when she brings up the publishing issues its like mariah was doing most of the hard work on the songs and here comes walter at the end putting his name on it and getting a large part of the ownership (money) of the song because The record company hired him so it forces mariah to share writing credits even though she came up with the sounds in her head. That’s what she was talking about in that interview, that she can’t express it due to her not knowing how to write music but she knows how it sounds so walter plays for her until she says “okay thats what i want” and walter again takes credit automatically, Walter basically confirms my theory because in a 2018 interview he said mariah doesn’t like to share credit with people

      Exactly

    • @alexd1121
      @alexd1121 Před 3 lety +21

Yes! That is the most typical yet unspoken issue in the music business for most singer/songwriters who don’t play instruments.
MC is shedding a light on it but maybe not being fully articulate about it.
I and many of my singer/songwriter friends have been through exact similar ordeals with musicians who always demean any singer/songwriter who don’t play instruments and ask for shared credits when they’re just channels for someone else’s vision.
That’s why this whole new generation is always flaunting their “live” playing instrument skills like LGaga as a supposed beacon of credibility.
But you can master 100 instruments and still not know how to write a hit record which audiences fail to understand.
That’s why MC, Madonna, Janet in her days, MJ, Adele or Ariana Grande have so many n.1 songs, their songwriting is instinctive and touches people.
That’s also why smart producers often hire something called a top liner to create melodies on instrumental tracks. Usually top liners are singers. They’re different talents.
In my opinion the credit needs to be shared 50-50 when the instrumental track precedes the melody but if it’s the other way round then no way but the singer who doesn’t play an instrument (the greatest singers often don’t since their voice is their instrument) often gets screwed in that process.
I wish she’d articulate that more.
There was a great TV moment where John douche Oates attacks Madonna at a conference for similar issues. (Who remembers him today?).
It’s probably why Quest brought Walter up on the down low.
Can’t stand these musicians who mix up talent and skill and try to intimidate those who do have god given talents with their academic skills....endless ordeal. It’s also why Madonna called Quest on a Tonight Show episode asking if he had a problem with her...

The shade towards Walter about All I Want for Christmas is You was pretty clear in the previous Genius Level interview. The problem with Walter might be that Mariah was too naive to see that he was Tommy‘s guy from the beginning, no matter how many songs they worked on together. Whatever Walter provided for Mariah, he could just give away to anybody if needed, I mean Celine and Christina sounded more like Mariah than ever in My Heart Will Go On and Nobody Wants to be Lonely. No shades towards the two singers as they might not want that at all. We all know Mariah was desperately trying to prove she’s more than a Tommy production, which pretty much meant a Walter production at the same time. Now, Mariah is confident enough about her own artistry to acknowledge Walter, which also means that Walter is cancelled to her forever because he really isn’t needed.

In a time where you consider your ex-husband a threat to your career, you aren’t going to necessarily want to work with someone if you don’t think you can trust them. Mariah was incredibly nervous about Tommy where her career was concerned. I can stand by Walter staying with Tommy. He presented Walter a much more secure career than Mariah could have offered him.

Even now, what I love nothing more is hearing MC just sing, stripped back, no hangers on - I think it was this magic that came through in the songs they done together.
At the time they needed each other - both fairly new to the business, Mariah provided her voice & songwriting & Walter provided the musical aspects & the glue that moulded the songs into what they would become.
Mariah has obviously moved on, it was a magical place in time & in her career.

Walter used to say that Mariah had most of the song written before bringing it to him and that he add the bells and whistles and thought she was doing scales. He used to diss that record until it became a standard, most likely because of his limited involvement. He's only trying to take more credit for the writing of the song in hopes that it will open more doors for him professionally. My favorite Mariah/Walter collaboration is either Butterfly or My All.

I took 5 music publishing courses at UCLA with the head of Universal Publishing, an exec at Warner Chappell and the leading music lawyer in the US. Copyright of a song is just the melody and the lyrics. You are supposed to make any instrumentalists and producers sign "Work for Hire" contacts so they don't take any publishing rights, and it's a one time payment. Mariah coming up with the lyrics and melodies - what you'd sing a capella - most of the time should have 100% of the copyrights in those songs. Adding "the beat" and piano chords or instrumental bass lines and instruments and sound effects are not apart of the copyright unless it's so recognizable that a listener instantly would know the drum beat or bass line, such as in "Under Pressure" that's mostly a beat driven song. This reason is why the judge ruled Vanilla Ice infringed on the copyright. Some producers like Walter, ask for publishing rights, and he might have written more melodies - not lyrics - than we'll ever likely know unless they get very specific. Lyrics without melodies are just poems. I suspect he should have had less than half of the publishing rights for those songs since Mariah would come up with most of the lyrics and melodies of the verses, choruses and bridges - which is the whole copyright of the song! If you really want the producer, you might give them publishing rights. Mariah likely didn't know early on about music law and gave away more publishing rights than she had to. She knows now. She had a "Sunset Clause" on her publishing that ended in 2005, and she switched to Universal Pub at the time, as confirmed by my teacher who is the head of it. It's one of the main reasons why she named the album Emancipation... - she was completely severed from contracts with Sony except for her back catalogue. I like music law, and the explanation might be a lot for some, and others might like it.

I think that the best way to describe their relationship is that "it was a really good moment in time". I agree with you that she should never work with him again and maybe, it's for the best. We (as Lambs) have had GREAT songs from their collaboration and we should be thankful for that. However, once the trust is broken, there is no turning back. And Mariah is known for turning the other cheek and forgiving, but there's only so much one person can take.
Plus, there is NO DOUBT in my mind that during the "butterknife incident", he was there along with Cory Rooney (who went as far as confirming it on his ig before deleting the post). And I think that the "mob-like loyalty" she's referring to in her memoirs is a very revealing terminology. I don't think he was just reporting back to TM. It was deeper than that and have may or may not even put her in danger in some situations.
So all in all, yes we are grateful for the many songs they produced together but I'm 100% on Mariah's corner and I don't think they should (nor need) work together again.

I’ve always gotten the impression that Mariah isn’t very fond of Celine for some reason. I don’t think she feels threatened by her talent bc I mean... she loves and adores some really talented singers like Whitney, Patti, Aretha, and Beyoncé. I have a feeling she might just not be into Celine’s music since Celine mostly does pop contemporary ballads, which we all know Mariah used to do a lot of and strayed as far away from that sound as possible during the late 90s and onwards. Everyone knows Mariah, Whitney, and Celine are all legends and have amazing voices, but from a listener’s perspective, I’ve always felt like Mariah has the most interesting and versatile sound/discography, Whitney had the most soulful tone, while Celine never really veered from her pop ballad sound. I also agree that Mariah may have felt some type of way about Walter working with other divas like Celine. Kind of reminds me of Whitney expressing her annoyance of Madonna scoring hits with Babyface in an interview after she worked with him prior to Madonna.

All Walter has to do is to apologize to Mariah and come clean for ditching and snitching on her, that's all, if you know you will know what I mean by that, Mariah knows this and Walter knows this too,
If he continues to play a victim and saying bad things about Mariah here and there then he keeps reducing his chance of having at least some works on his remaining life, we and Mariah knows how great of a piano player he is and that ear is gifted, and we also know Mariah is the only partner he will ever be associated with, so he has to swallow his pride ( or should I say "stop worrying about Tommy") and just come clean and say sorry to our sister,
You know what, the night Mariah was talking about at the dinner table on her memoir, where Tommy held a knife to her cheek Walter was there too?? Well, he has a lot he witnessed to not talk, for him to think Mariah would just be like "We love everybody" and call him to work together, the nerve he has, Mariah thought of Walter as a friend and someone close, most of Mariah songs were personal and dear to her, she spends time and feelings to them, she comes and sings and directed Walter where she wants the songs to go, that means she even maybe told Walter what some of them lyrics are really about, she trusted Walter, she came to Walter for some stuffs regarding her house with Tommy, remember Mariah said she felt more at home in the studio than in her own house with Tommy?, now who was she in the studio with 24-7? Walter, now you can see how close of a bond that was,
He is at fault to the core, after him and what he did, Mariah never trusted anyone from there on, sometimes I wished Trey would know how to play piano like Walter, coz i think he is the only person that stayed loyal to Queen Mariah to this day, God bless you Trey.
So Walter, if you are out of work, you know what to do, and also I feel like the diva thing makes people thinks of Mariah as difficult but I think Mariah is the sweetest person on earth, you just have to be real around her, mariah hasnt said a lot of stuffs through out her career about so many things and so many people to avoid hurting people, she a sweetheart,
Mariah don't need nobody to stay relevant, its just God, herself and a pen, she can do her songs a capella and it would still sell, they needs her, and that's why, even Walter when he thought he was right to do mariah like that around that time she needed her , he hasn't worked on anything with anyone memorable to this day, Mariah has gone on to have a tremendously best and bigger career after him,
I can go on but I'm tired of him, let the ship sail.

Had never heard about the Celine Dion thing. Figures since Dion was married to a Tommy like figure.
Makes me love our Butterfly even more that she stands by her truth and plowed though all that sh*t.
It’s very clear to hear what Walter A brought to the table, just by listening to songs where he’s not participating. He’s clearly a skilled musician and even though Mariah has that melodic magic touch that MJ also had which trained musicians rarely own, it’s clear that he brought a classic element to her instinctive songwriting that doesn’t appear in songs where he’s not featured.
That said if he was a Tommy toy soldier then he needs to be dismissed.

I don't know if lambs know this, but here something perhaps interesting. Lara Fabian who is also a songwriter and a great vocalist who writes many of her own songs, worked with Walter for her first English album when she got signed with Sony. Supposedly Lara and Walter had an intimate relationship for some time, although I don't know how true this is, since majority of Lara's documentaries, news, and information mainly available only in French, but basically that's what was claim. There was also clip of Walter's presence when Lara won or performed at an prestigious French award show, which indicates they definitely know or worked together. In her self titled English album, there's a song called Broken Vow which is a fan favorite written by Lara and Walter, she describes the song, as talking about "betrayal and forgiveness", fans claim that song is about her relationship with Walter, although that is questionable. That is interesting because, once again, unsure of the accuracy, supposedly Walter tried to take away Lara's credit as songwriter for the song. Plus, looking at Lara's previous work before she got signed with Sony and after leaving the label, Lara was and still is credited as the main songwriter. This shows she has great control over her songs and albums. However, for her English album with Sony, she was not credited as the main writer of the songs. Lara's name was mentioned as a writer but never really as the main writer including Broken Vow considering that song is her own work, questioning whether the claim Walter taking away her credit as the main songwriter contains truth. It's obvious Lara had no control of her first English album or her credit was stripped away. Then, she left the label and decided to go back to Europe. Wonder if working with Walter is one of the many contributing factors for her leaving. Some people also claim Walter is great to work with but not necessarily a great person which is why he's not known as much, but the truth is questionable. Just several information of one of the person Walter worked with before.

@@musicworldnow365 "Musicology" trumps "music business" no? By virtue of pure definition, right? Whether Walter complained or not complained is irrelevant. I'm strictly talking about musical composition. To do what he did in the way Mariah describes he did (then and now) to produce some of the biggest records the WORLD (yes, the world) has ever seen is quite a triumph, and I don't even think Walter himself was 50% of that. I think the majority of that is Mariah's voice (#1) and her lyrics (#2), but the musicality of the composition of the songs has to be attributed partially to him. Even she acknowledges that, and I don't think it's fair for us not to no matter what their professional/personal relationship became.

Should take an interest in what Afansasieff has done outside his work with (for) Carey. He's heavily involved in finding and promoting new talent. He is also a true musician - when it comes to composition. He studied harmony and counterpoint I believe as a college student. Play Afanasieff on the piano, whatever the recording artist, and it always sound like Afanasieff. So that is the give away about who is really doing the heavy lifting on the compositional side. A song like Touch My Body or We Belong Together would never be written by Afanasieff. Where is the heavy lifting in writing music? It is in things like finding the chord progressions. This is not Carey's territory. But this is not to distract from her vocal abilities. Vocal abilities are as important musically as compositional ones. It seems that Afanasieff prefers to write now with top notch lyricists like the Bergmans - even if that is not the stuff that gets you on the Billboard 100. I don't think he's chasing personal fame anymore. I also should say that of course ultimately he was working for Motola and Sony - not Carey, as they were his boss and employer.

I just wanted to hear her side of the story more when it came to those events and when it came to Walter. She said in 97 that they never had professional argument, but had personal ones. Before she met she had already written amazing songs like Vision of Love or Vanishing, in Emotions álbum Mariah worked with Carole King and her lyrical content had the signature of a Mariah Carey song, very "verbose" incomparable lexicon for songwriter (which is hard to make huge words like she uses for lyrics) what I mean is that she Co wrote many of her songs with many other people and Mariah's musical identity always shine in every album since 1990, so he indeed was a great partner but not as much as he claims to be otherwise Mariah's music wouldn't be as consistent as it is throughout her career. Without him we got ballads like Cry, Camouflage, Angel's Cry, We belong together, Fly like a bird, Mine again, so that how you can tell how much of his input was in every song, which is not as much as he wants to thing otherwise Mariah's discography would be not be cohesive.

I’ll present the song lyrically and melodically to a producer and even on my latest project I’m working on I recorded acapella demos of all the songs and sent it to the producer to add music which I also guide them in making to my standards. Do I credit them as a producer in the booklet and credits? Yes. Do I give them songwriting credits? No. They didn’t write the song (lyrics and melody), they are adding accompaniment which I basically coproduce. I’m sure it’s a record label and mainstream music business standard to do so, but is it technically right? Not in my opinion.

@Anne Day Most of those lawsuits was because Mariah didn't properly credit a sample she used. Hero was dismissed twice, cause the guy was just straight up lying. Mariah wrote with Walter, but she also wrote alone and presented producers songs she had already started composing alone.

    • @Sttephy30
      @Sttephy30 Před 2 lety

@Anne Day Walter was apart of it, "Can't Let Go" was about some unknown songwriters not being properly credited for their melodies. During the *Emotions* era, Mariah was sued a lot for not properly crediting melodies she would take inspiration from. Make It Happen was inspired by I Want To Thank You , Emotions was inspired by Best Of My Love & Can't Let Go was inspired by Make It Last Forever and Right Before My Eyes.
I think Mariah didn't realize at that point, that you had to credit for taking inspiration from other ppls songs. Mariah Carey DID go to Walter with the idea for Can't Let Go first, and she gave him that melody, a melody she got from Make It Last Forever/Right Before My Eyes, he didn't even know it! Also, she HAS credited him for co-composing the music with her, in 2019, which is VERY recent. She said it in this interview (czcams.com/video/N_Vhz5BiypU/video.html - at 5:30 mark).
Mariah Carey also stated how she would have to sway Walter in the way of those haunting and melodically soul driven ballads they did. Many of the songs, Walter doesn't even know where Mariah got the inspiration for those melodies. Mariah is a student of music, and loves the 70's and 80's. She got it together by Music Box, and properly credited everything, even if it were just a simple riff like for "I've Been Thinking About You".
But again, Mariah would have songs already formed, and would complete them with Walter (or David Cole or Jermaine Dupree or Ben Margulies). The prime example IS Can't Let Go. He didn't know where that R&B melody came from, certainly not from him. He just followed HER lead. But they would also compose songs together without outside influence as well. Which more than likely are songs like "All I've Ever Wanted" or "When I Saw You", songs that Mariah really didn't like, cause it lacked the R&B/Soul flavor she preferred.

    • @Sttephy30
      @Sttephy30 Před 2 lety +3

@Anne Day Your comment makes no sense. Mariah's story has NEVER changed. She has always stated how she co-composes the music (with usually a writing partner that can play an instrument), and takes the music home and puts lyrics, harmonies and vocal stylings to it. That has *NEVER* changed. And linking you to Mariah Carey stating she co-composed a song with Walter Afanasieff proves your comment is bullshit. In that footage, Mariah is sitting there giving credit to Walter as a co-composer of the music, long after their split. She never changed her story, just didn't fuck with him anymore, so she's not going to talk wonderfully about their relationship anymore, as he was a bitch made submissive ass kisser to Tommy Mottola. But she has NEVER changed her story. She also states she co-composes the music and does her lyrics and vocal productions alone. That's how she works with everyone, whether it be Walter, Jermaine, Ben Margulies, David Cole or even Carole King for *If It's Over.* Her style of writing has never changed.
And PS, Walter DID co-compose the song I linked you to in that interview. Stop trying to be right and understand that what you're saying is just some made up bullshit in your own head. Walter co-composed and computerized all the instruments for the song _"All I Want For Christmas Is You"._ So to say I'm linking you to interviews of songs he didn't co-compose is fucking stupid as hell. But I've seen many of your comments, and stupid is what usually spews from em'. 🤦‍♂️

I get where she's coming from. As a singer/songwriter if you come up with a melody and sing it to someone and they play what you came up with - you technically WROTE that melody...they simply PLAYED it. I've always felt songs should be broken down that way..."Lyrics/Melody by: Mariah -- Instrumentation by: Walter A." -- You can tell by Mariah's arrangements (all the intricate stacks & interwoven parts) that she formulates entire arrangements in her head. There's something more to this, because she ALWAYS gives credit to Jermaine Dupri, DJ Clue, etc. yet she feels strongly about Walter taking credit? 👀👀👀

When Mariah needed support the most he stayed with Motorolla. She disclaims him since and rightfully so

Hi have always loved can't let go and others in Mariah's early career songs Walter was part of like, Anytime you need a friend and he's a good piano player too. I see it as any other artist Mariah has worked with it was a professional relationship and that's all it amounted to.
