I also wanted to adopted older dogs from the shelter, as they are least likely to be adopted. Sure puppies are cute but older dogs deserve a happy life and are still cute.
Yes, but older dog can have issues from the past, and for a family with kids its better to start with a puppy so it can get used to kids easier and get trained from scratch.
Ya I tend to stay away from older dogs because I have 4 adult dogs and I dont need a adult dog i bring home to attack my dogs puppies are easy and get to know there place within the pack
I’ve also always adopted older and sicker dogs. If not me, then who ? I’ve never had behavioural problems from a shelter dog. Giving an older or sick animal a great life is unbelievably rewarding

Worst thing about puppies is the toilet training. Never before was I so happy to have plastic flooring in the living room.
This family seem lovely. Hope Lollypop has a long & happy life with them.
Agreed. With larger breeds its especially tough. Our mastiff like any puppy needed to be toilet trained, but he was too big at 13 weeks for the puppy pads to prevent messes, yet obviously too young to be keep outside during the night. Now that he's grown the only mess he makes is drool.
I let my dog mouth and bite me when she was a young puppy (2-6 months old), to teach her bite inhibition. When she bit softly I continued to play with her, but if she bit hard enough to hurt I would yelp or say uh-uh sharply and turn away, ignoring her for a few seconds. Then back to playing. She learned so quickly not to bite hard. Then after a few months (when she was about 6 months old) I taught her not to bite at all, which also wasn't difficult.
Basically you're trying to teach them that biting too hard hurts humans, and to continue playing they need to be gentle. If they decide to nip in the future when they're startled, they'll instinctively remember not to bite hard.
That is great! If you want to check out a video on this I can really recommend this one m.czcams.com/video/068K5Zlph9U/video.html
@@m.z.593 I watched that when I first got my dog, great video :)
My dog was a mouthy player, and a grumbly player. She would gnaw away on your arm and just leave slobber (and occasional red marks that were gone in 10 min, never drew blood). As soon as you said her name she'd stop playing and drop your arm; but man, if you didn't know how she played and you heard her from another room you'd think she was tearing someone's head off.

I’m glad the family’s doing well with the dog, but I do wonder why Victoria recommended them a beagle/basset mix. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend those breeds to people who have never owned dogs before, cause they can be a bit of a challenge. But I’m sure Victoria taught them well!
You are right that hounds can be difficult when it comes to obedience. Stay, come and heel will be difficult to teach to a dog like this. On the other hand, beagles and bassets tend to love children and get along well with other dogs. As long as you keep your hound on leash or in a properly fenced area they are not very likely to get in trouble and they are naturally friendly towards everyone.
Emma Blomqvist That’s true. I was also thinking about “house manners” too, like barking, chewing things and getting into food and stuff. They already complained in the video, that the puppy barks a lot, which are traits of both beagles and basset hounds. But again, i do think Victoria would have instructed them on the kind of dog they’re getting! ^^
@@maiarostved Yeah, those are all things that can become problematic, we'll see if it's addressed in future videos. I guess the play pen and baby gates (and de-cluttering the kids' room) will help prevent inappropriate chewing and stealing food. Hopefully there will be something about appropriate chew toys and preventing excessive barking.
Emma Blomqvist yes! My basset is very stubborn and was not easy to train, but she is very sweet and loving to mostly everyone. ❤️
I was wondering about this too, but it looks like size was a limitation for them & they might have wanted to adopt a dog on the day (though ideally, y'no, they'd go back another day). I would've gone for one of the other larger mixes (maybe not the shepherd mix) as the barking would've been too much for me, but I prefer big dogs lol (as a borzoi owner, a lab/shepherd mix is a 'medium dog' for me 😅). I hope they can keep up with the energy and training requirements of this pup, and that they've got access breed-specific resources & support!

i got my toy poodle a little while ago and he can sit, lay down, leave it, run through a tunnel, jump over small objects, lay on his carpet when we eat, knows the peepee commando, is potty trained, stays on command and reacts to his name. he’s 10 weeks old now. consistent training and some very tiring days (and nights) are your best friend in the beginning guys. also victoria’s book really helped!
lmao. I thought you meant a literal TOY poodle. HAHA. Now I realise the breed. LMAO
Wow that’s great but just be careful about potty training for the first year lots of people fall behind after the third or fourth week of training
Christine butterick yeah i know i’ve had a dog before, thank you. a lot of people misunderstand the concept of potty training. i mean that he gives us clear signs like barking at the door when he needs to go, not that he can hold his bladder the entire day because that just wouldn’t be fair to ask of him. a little guy like him can only hold it so long... plusss you have to keep paying attention; sniffling a lot during play could potentially mean that he needs to go but he’s occupied with other things. you can never be too sure until they’re older!!!

They are on point!
Yeah lol 😂
FR
Perhaps because they are totally irrelevant when it comes to dog training. Her techniques are the helpful part and her ability is not affected in any way by her hairstyle.
My advice to getting first dog:
1- consider if you can really commit to having one. It's a huge responsibilty
2- study the breed
3)- investigate your family
- do you get visitors often?
- how long do you work for?
- what's you living space like?
4) consider getting an older dog before a puppy. Puppies need a lot of attention in comparison
Some things to consider:
Shelter dogs may present issues such aggression, fear, and health implications. They come with a backstory and may need more help adapting.
On the other hand when you adopt them you are giving them a second chance to a better life.
Puppy:
Requires constant attention as like a child dont understand wrong from right yet.
They are usually easier to train in comparison to older dogs but potty training can be quite frustrating in the start. They do learn eventually though.
________________________________________
If you do get a dog :
Set a routine
Get used to cleaning up after it
Remember that it depends on you and learns from you
Issue with this is older dogs can also come with existing problems. So make sure if you do get an older dog you also research into that whenever possible. Most shelters will be able to tell you if they're good with people, other dogs, cats, what kind of environment they were in, and so on. All are extremely important if you're getting an older dog.
Nah I get the coolest looking dog
@@traceyharmon3284 And that's how we end with highly anxious dogs that don't get enough exercise or stimulation. Don't get a husky, a big or cool dog if you can't walk them 2-3 times a day for a few hours and meet the needs of the breed.
The last one was wrong for example what if you did something wrong like rub him where he doesn’t like it and he bites you an adult dog would mess you up a puppy not so much you have to start off with a puppy.
@@breezexn8445 uh no lmao another "get a puppy" when many adult dog's spend their whole life in shelters

Dogs and humans are not that different after all ☺️ we're both intelligent and emotional creatures
Love how they got a dog trainer with them to choose their puppy! Not many people do that and just adopt willy-nilly.
It’s almost impossible to imagine how hard a puppy is beforehand! I got my first puppy, a standard goldendoodle, 3 weeks ago and it’s SO much work but also very rewarding. Even though I had a lot of prior experience with adult dogs a puppy was a shocking difference!!
E G lucky I can’t get a dog
Kobraz I’m sure you’ll be able to get one in the future, if it’s what you really want!
It gets better! My golden is now 6 months, and he finally can have some independence. I remember the first two months being exhausting but amazing
Oh that brings me back to when my goldendoodle was a pup! I was scared he would get kicked out of puppy training because he kept trying to hump the other dogs! 😂He is such a good boy now and cut that out as soon as he got fixed. I remember him being so hyper, that I bought a leash attachment for my bike that attached to his chest harness and allowed him to pull me forward at his own pace. I still had control of the direction or if I needed him to stop, but he got tired out in ways that my walking and running just could not keep up with.
Hannah Pryor yep, my puppy is quite the humper too, something about soft cotton pyjamas really gets him going!! However he’s not so bad as he was and we plan to get him fixed before it becomes sexual at puberty. He’s also full of energy but that was why we wanted him, when he’s old enough we will be out hiking in the countryside most weekends!
Someone should tell that girl not to pick up her dog when she’s barking nonstop.always ignore and praise when it stops otherwise they’ll always bark for attention

It's great to see responsible pet owners from the very start!
I find puppy training pads handy to have on hand even though my dog is house trained and it never gets too cold in my area, you never know when they might be useful. I noticed my dog would have accidents just in the bathroom on the mat occasionally (it happens). He recently had a bout of pancreatitis and diarrhea as a result, first thing I did when he got home from the vet was lay down puppy training pads in the bathroom. If he didn't have time to tell me he needed to go outside he went on the training pads which I easily cleaned. Thankfully that only happened twice, once when I was out and once when I was at the toilet (which I found funny). If your dog gets sick it's handy to have the puppy pads. They're also useful if your dog becomes less continent once older, which happened with my Labrador. He simply couldn't hold on long enough to get outside, so he peed on the puppy pads with a stray drop or two occasionally.
Puppies of any breed are hard work and have their issues, you can't have a single dog marked up as "good for beginners". Have an Alaskan Malamute which apparently shouldn't be for first time owners, that breed doesn't behave like other dogs so I don't see how owning another breed would help.
I also didn't have an elimination room (not everyone has spare rooms for that), I had doggy door bells for Cujo to ring when he needed the bathroom which worked like a charm. The one issue I had was him crying at night when he was sleeping downstairs, even with his older "sister" because I wasn't down there with him. He'd only stop once I came down and he tried to sleep on me immediately, even leaving some of my work clothing didn't work. Now I have an adult dog that sleeps in my bedroom every night.
Should of trained better
you,,, actually can tho lol. there are certain breeds that generally have more laid-back and easy temperaments which are better for people who have never owned a dog before. yes all puppies are a challenge, but certain puppies are usually less of a challenge than others. a whippet puppy will generally be much easier for a beginner owner to handle than, say, a border collie, because of the genetic temperamental differences within their breeds.
but i mean if you’ve done extensive research and are 100% ready for the challenges of a more advanced breed, then i see no problem with that either. it just depends on what each person wants from their specific dog 🤷
@@kazzoey9164 That's untrue, there's 5 aggressive dogs that either attack people or dogs locally and they're all Labrador. That breed is frequently promoted as laid back, gentle and chill breed but this again relies on training. My Malamute is going to be 4 years old this year, according to the professional breed specific trainers the Mals are predisposed to having a selective hearing, high prey drive, escape artists and are terrible off lead with little recall and I've first hand seen people using the breed disposition as an excuse for their dog getting loose and slaughtering the neighbour's poultry. It is purely down to how you raise and train your dog.

Puppy: barks for attention
Child: gives attention by picking her up
Me: oh gosh, please don't do that. If you do this too often your dog will always bark when it wants attention
I’ve never heard of that way to potty train before, I wish she elaborated on conditioning the dog then go outside to potty from the one pad. Bring the pad outside to one area over and over? I always have done the crate/potty combo but I bring the dog to a potty area and my dogs all poop and pee basically on command where ever we go. I’m a dog walker and have trained the dogs I walk to poop near the free poop bag and trash stations so I carry less waste on my walks :)
Definitely should've elaborated more. Part of the whole thing was that it's quite cold where they are, from what I gathered. I wonder, was this episode all about this family or was it split with different things? I want to see the entire episode.
A year ago I didn’t like how she was acting with the people but admired her love for the dogs. Honestly after about a week of watching these I basically completely get everything she does with the people and agree with everything she says.
first time dog owners i'd recommend a senior (7+ years) from a rescue they're still wiggly and cute and bonus already housetrained (probably!) and you know what they look like full size, if you have kids or other pets do your research on breed and history of the dog but yes please ADOPT don't shop! and watch out for scams especially on craigslist!!
Thank you for this! We need more people to adopt dogs. Adoption saves many lives
My first dog was a golden retriever puppy. I always remember she would always bite your feet if you walked in the room without any shoes on
My doggy was 7 when I adopted her. They thought she was a true stray; no microchip, not house broken, not leash trained.... She's all of that now. But, I've had and worked with dogs for years, and am fairly decent at simple training for a family pet.
#Adoptorshopresponsibly! We need breeders! and we need to get rid of puppy mills and backyard breeders (i myself own a intact dog RESPONSIBLY never had a unwanted litter while he has been in my care)
Adopting is awesome, but shopping won't be bad either when you choose a responsible breeder. No backyard breeding or puppymills, but honest and quality breeding as in the "parent" dogs aren't preggers 24/7 and the breeder makes sure the puppies are well. Also having the required certificates and being up to date!
I feel like if I ever mention that I would rather buy a puppy from a responsible breeder, people will still attack me for even suggesting that I would shop for a puppy -no matter if I say specifically from responsible breeders.
Also my mom is HoH and going blind (has limited sight in one eye, limited hearing from one ear) so she has looked into possibly getting a service dog and as it should be obvious, service dogs are mainly bred so that you get the best fits in personality and other factors for the dog to properly perform its duties. (And no, service dogs meant specifically for blind people should not IMO be called "seeing eye" as I heard that seeing eye dogs are specifically trained by this one place in America or something. I prefer guide dog as it gets straight to the point and specifies the type of "job" the dog has.)
You can buy puppies from breeders without doing any harm when you know where to look, the people to ask help from and how to be a responsible customer.
With my family we would turn to my moms aunt who has quite the experience in breeding daschunds for more than 20 years (although has not had any litter in the last 10 or so years). And yes, she had the papers to do that.
When adopting please do try and adopt older dogs if that is possible, if not then please do take the puppies.

I recommend a prong collar for training/pulling especially for big dogs raw diets are good but not everyone can do it and that’s fine e collars are also really dig they don’t shock so don’t worry they only buzz clicker training is the best method in MY opinion
@@chillyforest69 if you have troubles holding your dog I would recommend looking at a front hook harness first they are less aversive than shock/prong collars. Of course all of these are best only tmeporary until you have been able to teain your dog so she doesn't pull.

@@chillyforest69 right of course normal harnesses give the dog more control but a font hook harness has a hook in front of the dogs chest so if he pulls he gets turned around. Just saying it is a good option in my opinion
“My favorite puppy is snow board, because he is really cool”
I think you just like the name 😂
We got a mutt puppy out of a litter (9 puppies, first pick). We checked them all to see which puppy was the calmest, which could handle the kids, and which could handle being touched all over. We settled on our current dog, who is now 7 years old. We knew how large the mother was, so we knew she could be around that size (50lbs). She is only a little smaller than her mom.
It's incredibly important to do your research before hand. Don't let a dog's looks sway you...looks don't matter when the dog is high energy and you don't have the time for them.

I love that this family got some professional advise
It’s so nice seeing a good family
I love victoria but learning a puppy to relieve herself indoors is wrong. It costs a lot of time but with crate training and a good schedule you can train a pup to relieve itself outside within 2/3 weeks. And it's pretty simple. Out of the crate, take the pup outside, playtime (1/1,5 hour) take the pup outside, sleep time in crate. And repeat.
She recommended the pads because it was snowing often and the cold can be rough on puppies. She did say that they should begin taking the puppy outside in the next few weeks
You're correcting her by... agreeing with her? Since she said exactly what you did. Outside is best was stated in the video.
She’s been a trainer for decades. Haha
Learning to eliminate on potty pads can actually be very helpful in the long run. It teaches them that the pads are the ONLY place they are allowed to eliminate inside of the house, which gives you the option to remove the pads as needed while you are training them to “go” outside, as they will have to look to you for answers when they realize that there is not a pad on the ground. It also carries on into the future for any situation in which your dog *can’t* go outside but still needs to relieve themself. Potty pads are my savior during particularly bad hurricane seasons when my dogs have no way of going outside to use the bathroom (tho as someone who owns a great dane,,,i shudder each time i learn there’s a gnarly storm coming 😭😂)
LOLLIPOP!!! That's the cutest name I've EVER heard!! I genuinely teared up a little! :'D

When my current dog, who was also my first puppy, was a baby, I read him Goodnight Moon a lot. He was the calmest puppy ever. The closest he ever came to biting was play-fighting, and he was taught the difference by our older family dog, who lived with me for a few years until he passed away. As my mum always says "Dogs will tell each other when they've had enough."
I litterly addicted to these videos

I like how they’re names are “the felines” when that means animals like cats, Tigre’s, etc. When they are adopting a dog XD
I appreciate this family
I watched this show a lot and I use some of her tricks when dealing with my dog.
Me: wanting a high energy dog
Me rn: low energy pit bull that likes to play sometimes
All I can say about getting a puppy is: socialize them as much as possible. Get them used to the world. Touch their paws, brush their teeth, bath them, let them meet dogs, other animals, people of all sizes, forms and colors, new surroundings, all kinds of floors, everything. It is so incredibly important and it is so very difficult to fix later. My dog is the best example. I've spent a fortune on a dog trainer and every few months we pick a new topic to improve. With a puppy you can get them used to things in days, with an old dog it takes months of super tiny baby steps of progress. Every now and then I wish I could dig up her previous "owner" and just lock them into a tiny room with no window for six years or so. Let's see how they like it. They've done so much damage by doing nothing.
Any suggestions how to socialize when there’s a pandemic going on? I’m taking my puppy out on walks but he has not had good experiences with neighborhood dogs barking as he walks along.
@@MinPinSteve Best would be one on ones while both dogs are not on leashes. Both dogs should have similar characters. And the meeting should be a place neither dog calls their home. In my case since I have a traumatized dog the dog trainer is actually arranging the other dog since she is always there to help. One other owner from our group provides a fenced-in meadow he bought for agility. Since it is private no strange dogs show up. And we owners just keep our distance to each other.
So my suggestion would be to find a local dog group where you can find some dogs that provide a good experience for a puppy. Especially in times like these I expect a lot of people are in similar situations so it should be easier to find them. Otherwise a dog training school could be a good place to start. They know other owners and the usually also have a private yard/meadow.
@@Silkke thank you for answering my question. This is great advice. I’ll look into dog training school. Thanks again!
I needed this-THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
I rescued a senior dog- a 9 year old chi weenie and he is the sweetest most cuddliest dog ever. Then a year after that we have now rescued a puppy who had already gone through three homes before we rescued her . He is like her elder and she is learning from him/ they get a lot from each other. It’s so cute when they play 🥰
"Elimination" 😆. I have never heard that used. Just urinate or wee?
There gonna have a great dog when it’s older.. but sadly my dog when he was a puppy we didn’t socialize him much so now he’s all aggressive towards other dogs
I mean.. it's gonna be a lot harder and take a while but you can still socialize the dog. There's some other videos on the Chanel abt it.
Same... we got our dog a bit late and it took us to gain her trust and now she is very loving to us but hates strangers and dogs. She won't attack them spontaniuesly but when they come closer she doesn't like that and is defensive.
same bc we got our dog a few months before the pandemic and we didn't realize that it'd last *this* long
My dog is nearly a year old (birthday is Halloween) and we've never really socialized him with other people or dogs, but when other people do come around he's still well-behaved. He gets too hyper when he sees another dog though.. nothing aggressive though since he knows better - he just wants to play with them. It's just all that puppy energy still because if I can manage to run him out before another dog comes around he's perfectly fine.
The point is you don't HAVE to socialize a dog to control their behaviors towards other people or dogs.. It does help though and is good for them. Just make sure you really work on commands and have your dog's focus through anything. You want to get recall and such to the point the dog will stop anything and listen to you.
You can still do it. It's just harder now, but the past is the past! Don't worry! What's important to remember is that your dog picks up on what you feel, so try to remain calm and see how close you can get before your dog starts to get aggressive. Good luck!
The more I see of Victoria or read written by her, the more I respect her and love her work
cant wait for the full episode on this
I have mixed feelings with puppy pads. We used them with our dogs, we have chihuahuas and we put them in the bathrooms and they would go and use them in the bathroom then we got a fenced in yard with a doggy door so they could go in and out as they please and they still use the bathroom in the bathrooms 🤦🏽♀️
"In over their heads"
I don't know. This seems like a normal family with typical puppy toilet training and teething problems.
If they truly wanted a puppy and were responsible, they wouldve researched and had a breed in mind, they wouldve known about basic puppy training, and already had a schedule in place before picking pup! They were lucky Victoria was there to help them! Without her they would've been in over their heads.
Such a beautiful puppy and home and family! They’re so blessed!
Puppies are so amazing, they deserve to have amazing people too.
