  • Today I'm swatching and reviewing my new LUKAS 1862 Aquarell 48 half pans Watercolor set.
    LUKAS 1862 is the artist grade range of Lukas, a German art supplies manufacturer since 19th century. It has a very attractive price, but can these paint compete with other Artist Brands?
    In my video, I will be testing Transparency, Vibrancy, completeness of the range, presence of single pigment paints.
    Are you curious about the result? Then watch the video to the end for this exhaustive, in depth review.

    You are my favorite to listen to. Always so descriptive and informative in your commentary. I'm learning so much from you, plus your Italian accent, like Latin is so beautiful and lyrical. You are a joy to listen to. I, too am an Elizabeth. Keep it up, love it.

      Thank you so much, Liz! Yes, we have a lovely name. I’m always afraid my accent will be a problem so I’m super happy about what you said! You made my day and you brought back a memory of myself sweating on my Latin grammar for many years in school! 😰

    Wow.. this is a fantastic set. The thing that I like the most is that it is consistent by mostly single pigmented colours and these colours have the right hues. There is nothing more frustrating than buying as watercolour and find out that the hues of the colours are altered or it contains colours that haven't heard of them before and then you have to swatch everything in order to figure out what kind of mixes these colours are going to give you.
    This is the kind of set that you can use it immediately . No surprises and strange convenience colours or strange hues and it contains also all the basic blue colours.

    Hiya Elisabetta, That's a really interesting collection of colours and a great video and assessment, thanks very much. I followed up link to the Montmartre site and I'm stunned by the very low price for this really good quality of paint. Take care Elisabetta and Ciao, David. x

      @@WatercolorElisabetta you’re right. It’ si really beautiful Sky blue color. The tubes are a little bit sticky but it’s not bad. I love also the quantity. If you use some colors more than anothers, it’s quiet economic 😆 thank you for your return.

    Another great review video! I am planning to move on from student grade Cotman. I am now selling my ACEO paintings so the time has come to step up to artist grade. Lukas caught my attention with their big 24ml tubes, but I have pumped the brake when I learned they use PR176 in so many of their mixes. Keeping in mind I'm selling my paintings, should I pass on Lukas?

    • @WatercolorElisabetta
      @WatercolorElisabetta  Před rokem

      Hi Mark! I personally like Lucas a lot. Since you are oriented to tubes, you are buying them individually, you could stay away from colours that might have Lightfastness issues…I have a few of those fat chunky tubes and I adore them! I believe Lukas is quite an underrated brand! Go for it!! I am sure you will find a difference with Cotman, which is an excellent student grade, but Lukas is definitely artist grade! Thanks for your comment! Let me know if you wish the developments!

    I have been getting interested in Lukas but everything I have heard or seen has been inadequate and contradictory... or half-baked. Your swatches and your video has been REALLY informative and helpful. Seems I was right to smell something positive with Lukas. THANK YOU, I shall get me a dozen tubes. It was really great to see the big drying shift with their Prussian Blue: will be great for our British skies. Prussian is great for skies anyway: most Prussians are very dark so I just water them down. Lukas' turqoise will also be lovely for skies and mixing greens with py129. ( I still LOVE playing with paints!)

      The brand Lukas was bought by a UK brand a few years ago, who kept the well-known packaging design put basically put their own paint in the tubes. That’s why you’ll see such varying reviews: people generally seem to love the original (German) Lukas paints, but the new British paint in the Lukas packaging is often seen as chalky, weak, and sticky (especially the tube paints).
      So if you want to get the “real” Lukas paints that people rave about, make sure you get the old tubes from Germany. The new British paint tubes look exactly the same, but says “made in the uk” or something like that in fine print on the side, and contain a very sticky, drippy paint with a lot of filler.

      @@xyz7572 I thank you for your contribution; however, Lukas is owned by Fila Group, an Italian company which also owns Maimeri and Daler Rowney, very fine artist brands. I personally love this brand and don’t find it chalky at all!

    • @xyz7572
      @xyz7572 Před rokem +1

      @@WatercolorElisabetta I’m glad you like them, we all have different opinions and experiences, after all, so what doesn’t work for one person may work really well for another! I’m not very fond of Daler Rowney’s tube paints because I’ve had binder separation in the tube and found them drippy, and that’s what I feel happened to Lukas when Lukas was bought. But if the paints work well for you, then that’s really good, especially considering the price point!
