Paul Rubens 5th generation Artist Grade Watercolor swatch + Sunset demo
Hello friends!
I’m Elisabetta, an Italian watercolor artist with a passion and a curiosity for art supplies and pigments.
Recently, Paul Rubens contacted me and sent me a wonderful artist grade palette (the so called 5th generation) to test and review for you. They were so kind to send me also some wonderful cotton paper with a very subtle and beautiful sparkling effect.
I'm very excited to swatch them for you and I will also try a demo sketch of a sunset with a very special guest star: my golden retriever!
Come swatch with me! And comment please! What is your experience with Paul Rubens? Have you got any comment, recommendation for me?
Have you tried this 5th generation range?

      Hello Hugo, I have never tried it but I suppose, from the name and pigment, that it should be an opaque white, not a titanium buff.

    So glad to see this review andthanks for the beautiful cherries. I appreciate that you always paint something inaddition to swatching. I am so tempted that retro palette! But I already have some of the colours. I would totallybuy it if they sold it empty. You know those cute Schmincken bijoux tins are made by FOME in Italy? I wonder if you can find them as empty palettes over there. I loved the yellow -its like a bit of sunshine on paper. The cochineal is nice, but cannot justify getting it. I already have a halfpan of genuine cochineal by Wallaceand Seymour, but it looks much paler and soft. It's part of their historical collection. I got some Malachite from them too. I wonder what makes them so different?😮;thanks Elisabetta (and @momarte for sending you the tin)

    Can you please swatch all the winsor and newton colours with PR179? If the permanent alizarin crimson new formula is very similar to perylene maroon which was also PR179, I think I will change to fugitive alizarin crimson rather than have two similar colours. Personally I found this video quite confusing you referring so often to perylene maroon even though you were swatching permanent alizarin crimson. Sorry!

    • @WatercolorElisabetta
      @WatercolorElisabetta Před 7 dny

      I’m sorry if you found it confusing. I use the name of the pigment, PR179, which is Perylene maroon. Permanent alizarin crimson is the commercial name. As I will do a series about Perylene colours in the future, your confusion will hopefully be solved!!

    Thanks for this! I have the WN mix and was kind of sorry I bought it. It’s living in only one of my oodles of curated palettes. I’ve been using it on its own in landscapes. But these mixes and how it knocks the color back, as Charlotte deWinton might say, is wonderful! This will be perfect for underpainting the whole landscape, a technique I’m just beginning to experiment with more.

    Thank you for the video. Beautiful colors. I am trying to choose between MaimeriBlu and Rosa Galery. Do you have any preference? I never tried them.

      @WatercolorElisabetta Před měsícem

      Hi! They are very different….Maimeri is more traditional, with a wonderful range and incredible pigmentation and translucency. Rosa Gallery is more innovative, amazing flow on paper and unbeatable value for money. You can’t go wrong with either of them!

    I rewatched this a couple of times, as I am still putting together a 6 colour palette to add to my starter set. I really enjoyed seeing the pigments behave on the paper. I am considering the burnt umber and mineral violet. Which si gle pigment cold red would you recommend? Right now i have vermilion hue and crimson lake, but i need something colder. Have you swatched Quin red or Quin magenta?

      Hi Berolina! I don’t remember now this specific quin Magenta, but generally is a color that I enjoy a lot as a cooler red. Thank you for your comment.

    ❤ great video. I love seeing them all together like that. I always keep cobalt blue on my palette. It’s great for portraits - when you might not want the granulation of pb29. I LOVE pb74! I have winsor and Newton. If you get the opportunity- Daniel smith pb36 is reallllly nice.

    I use prussian blue on my palette (I don’t get on with phthalos) and my favorites are sennelier, Rembrandt, and winsor and Newton. I always keep schmincke’s on my portrait palettes because it’s even lighter and easier to control- so it’s a must have for me, but definitely different from the others. I enjoyed seeing Antwerp blue painted out- it has similar qualities to the schmincke. I may have to try that one out next- schmincke has gotten really expensive lately. I feel the same way about PG7 being too overwhelming- I use sennelier’s mix with viridian and mix in more viridian to soften it out more and add more subtle granulation.

    Ciao Elizabetta 😊 TFS her lovely book and putting your special touch on this succulent painting. Your son and husband both have wonderful gifting skills. 🎁 I also enjoyed the cameo appearance of one of your happy dogs. The tail always gives away their mood, and its obvious you are very loved by this furry one. 🥰 I hope you are having a wonderful summer. ☀️
