I always enjoy hearing from Ralph Gilles. He represents the brand well without being overbearing. Seems like a great guy and IMMENSELY knowledgeable.
He’s a true car guy I love it. You’ll see him even appreciate the vehicles their competitors make as well. They need more people like him working for car brands
Everyone over here blaming Dodge like it wasn't the government that mandated auto manufacturers to switch to electric vehicles. The only reason why the mustang is still a ice car currently is because Ford selling an insane amount of mach-Es and lightnings to cover enough Cafe credits.
You all gave Musk and Tesla an insane amount of money and are shocked manufacturers are going electric. The public dug the gas car grave, not the government. 🤦♂
@@venom5809 in what world? To qualify for the Full EV tax credit you had to be making a serious amount of money. The majority of America can't afford a model 3 let alone groceries. The Government basically supported Tesla, along with tech bros who that's their entire personality. Now here we are. Is it better I don't know. Is it worse than a V8 no. The 5.7 needed to die, it was under powered and expensive. The 392 was cool, but 485hp in a 4800 pound car isn't cool. The only cool Mopar engine was the hellcat which isn't practical for daily use.
@@Rommer2258 I am talking about stock price dum dum. 🤦♂
Then which car was Chevy selling like hotcakes in order for their 700+hp Z06 Vette (not to mention ZL1 Camaro...Caddy Blackwing) to become reality?
You are the carbon they want to reduce...
Fun fact: he is the man that designed the Chrysler 300 in 05 and the SRT Viper
I thought he just made car videos on CZcams.
Props Mr Giles for saying it was the TEAMS design.
He should be very proud of this design. It's gorgeous. I can see them making a luxury Chrysler coupe from this as well (and would love to see that). The proportions are actually quite elegant, especially in profile.
The challener should get the 440 CID v8 2 stroke DFI engine prototype doge developed. this 2 stroke is DFI like Etec or Optimax and very clean running better than any 4 joke. And the smooth sound and feel. I was never a muscle car guy because im not a 4 stroke person but a 2 stroke fan. its still hard to believ how 2 strokeless the auto/truck industry is unless you convert a v8 to 2 stroke (thats been done) or are a rotax and achates power fan. i never liked 4 strokes and never will as making power on every stroke give better power to weight ratio, torque and efficiency. i dont care for any Hemi unless its been converted to 2 stroke cycle. The electric motor is a rotary magnet 2 cycle engine with its higher power to weight ratio and outrages torque. Also 2 strokes, rotary engines and electric motors can be run tilted in any position. Lets see if a hemi can do that!
I love the design of that Charger Daytona Concept. It’s about time a Charger had 2 doors 💪🏻
After watching Ralph side step the question about putting a V8 in that EV gave me a little hope that there's a chance.
LOL don't hold your breath!
We're crossing our fingers! 😁
Did you not see how the hood actually slopes down? I doubt the V8 would fit. Plus, the car has been specifically designed to be EV, without a transmission tunnel, without room for a driveshaft etc. Also, drop in a V8 and the weight balance is all screwed up and the car is now slower.
@@iamnid Without any of us seeing the underpinnings or structure of the vehicle, we just don't know the design. But the front end and the hood can be assembly line changes.
Maybe I'm an optimist but I'm really hoping that Mopar didn't disenfranchise their biggest fan base and that they'll pull something out of their hat. He mentioned several powertrain options, fingers crossed.
Lol they turned a Tesla to a v8 😮😮 I would do the same here
i'm not crazy about EVs, BUT im very glad to see something different in the EV world. i hope the production car looks like this.
I didn't even realize the front was integrated spoiler. That's tough!
Since having owned a 1968 charger 440 Magnum I absolutely love the looks of this car. Being in the tech world this car is right up my alley way more of a thrill than owning a Tesla for me. I have commented on other channels that Dodge does need to make a long tail version of this model and it would be perfect ⚡💯💯🏁
dodge did do R&D on a new 440 CID v8 DFI 2 stroke that was to make 1200'ish HP, alternative fuel, very clean and quiter. im a big 2 stroke fan and never was attached to 4 stroke powered car only 2 stroke powered stuff. they need to bring back this 440 CID DFI 2 stroke v8 to go along with electric. I got a GM v8 stroke 8v92 and i dont mind getting a few gallons of BRP XD-100 Etec oil for it to run it.
Yes plz, the world needs something called the 2-door electric charger!!!
I have always like the look of the Challenger but it wasn’t a practical car for me to own. The next new car does not have to practical and my goal is for it to be electric. The Dodge Daytona Charger is high on my list to buy.
You see you're feeding into the government, you're bowing down, you're allowing them to take control of you, you do realize that electric cars create more hazardous impact on the environment than a gasoline powered vehicle does between the mining for the minerals for the batteries, and the entire manufacturing process of the vehicle
@@America1st69
Since I already have a Ram 1500 Hemi, I can still pollute the planet and it hear it roar but when I drive my Charger EV I can save money on gas, drive fast (high HP and torque numbers most likely) and save the planet a little.
If you are happy living in your anti-government delusions - good for you. But I don't live there. I live in the real world where big oil corporations will put out misinformation in order to keep making profits and make sure their shareholders are making money, but screwing us over.
1500 hp 426 Hemi Hellcat isn't practical. It seats 5, 3 body + grocery trunk, 7 miles a gallon. Idk what your talking about. Yeah...it's not practical. 🤣
Ahhh, the Daytona. A neighbor down the street had one. Chargers were always 2 doors before 2005.
- Hmmm hatch isn't tradition, but I love hatches, so, 👍
- I think the Hornet will eat into the Charger sales . . . we will see.
- Well, they got the tail lights going in the right direction.
he he OMG, that frickin' BMW alarm 😂🤣
I think Ralph and the rest of the team have done a great job on this car. Can't wait to see it up close tomorrow.
Agreed. I love the looks of this car. Can’t wait to see the numbers.
Another great interview Tommy … keep them coming 👍👍.
So, let me get this straight. They are experiencing record sales of the Challenger and Charger and they kill off those products for this? We will miss the Charger, Challenger, Trackhawk, SRT8's. This car looks good.
Do you have any idea just how old that platform actually is....?!
It's getting harder to meet safety and emissions targets with that platform. There have been rumors of Giorgio platform revivals but nothing has come to surface. And even if they did, those Giorgio cars would be short lived.
@@revolutionday1 Yes, and the great thing is it works and it is selling well. New is not always superior. My son's new Charger Daytona is great!
Chrysler treated Ralph right his entire career. Glad to see him progressing professionally.
More than anything I would emphasize that this is by far the most attractive and cool EV I have seen. I think the biggest issue was the blunder they made with how they marketed the sound this vehicle makes. "Revving" the car when it is moving 2mph and showing that the sound is completely decoupled from the movement of the vehicle immediately destroyed any mystique that sound could have had. We also have never gotten to hear this thing at "wide open". It is a shame that the first impression of this extremely cool EV is that it is just a tesla with a cool body and a Dyson strapped to the floorboards.
I never have understood why there have been four door Chargers made. Should have called it something other than Charger, but it was better than the Japanese Chargers back in the late '70's.
"This is probably the hottest car of the year..."
Well, that didn't age too well 😂😂😂
I love this interview. Ralph did a great job without sounding like a corporate puppet.
Ralph is such a cool guy! I hope the car does well.
Thanks for an interview with the best American automotive designer in the business today. Ralph Gilles is the spiritual successor to Virgil Exner in terms of what he has done for Mopar. In terms of what he has accomplished for the brand identity of Dodge, well - it's just off the charts. This Daytona concept is a perfect example - FINALLY, an electric vehicle with some distinctive personality and attitude! Can't wait for the production version.
I went to school with Ralph Gilles at CCS and also talked with him around the time the 3rd generation Charger came ou, very intelligent and personable man.
Great design, sound and will be cool to see the production model. Great video!!
I love it, cant wait to see the price and full specs. I think dodge will be the Muscle of EVs
Great interview Tommy😎
I really hope the production version stays a 2 door.
Best looking ev I've seen. Definitely looks alot like the 68 charger. Well done!
Fabulous interview, Tommy!
Tommy, why didn't you ask the tough questions we all want to know? This was your chance to ask tough questions such as, why wont they offer a new V8 Challenger like Ford is doing with the Mustang?
Where can I get that hemi orange package seen at the start with the challenger? There aren’t any available to order anymore.
I want to see an EV modern version of 61 Lincoln wth the suicide doors
If Ralph Gilles is still in charge (of design), we are in good shape. Can't wait to see what happens next.
Thank you Dodge for doing this. I hate BEVs but I'm actually excited about this. It just happens to be electric in my eyes.
I love my v8’s, but know that the times are changing. When, not if, I have to go to an EV, I’m glad dodge is taking this route. Then only thing I wish it had was the door scallops the chargers have or the ones the 69 had. Now all I want to hear is the power it makes!
@@yodaevil what times are changing you can still get v8's.
Beautiful Car! Great job design team
I'm really impressed with Charger Daytona Banshee By SRT Concept is incredible 😍 I won't be at Detroit but hopefully I will have an opportunity at auto show closer to the east coast
Is that fish-eye mode (proportions...what?) on the the goprop...welcome to the fun house, and enjoy your headache!
The nonstop horn, then alarm (hella incompetence from the show staff there, wow!) was funny too...respect to Tommy and Ralph pushing through such stupidity. LOL 🤦♂
I must have missed the definitive answer the title implied?
IMO, there's two approaches that will end up succeeding for EVs, make the best recreation of what people love about the muscle cars (and other ICE cars) to maintain the spirit of fun driver oriented cars and fully elevated options that embrace the new technology as it's own source of inspiration and design. The worst thing is when a company leans too far into the middle ground like the Mach-E. This is how you respect your heritage while embracing the future.
Here in Silicon Valley, I'm getting sick of looking at Teslas. They are like the Corollas of old. They're everywhere. A fresh concept like the Electric Charger will be very popular.
I like the styling of the car . Especially how you can see the Retro look of the older chargers .. and for the record Chargers began as 2 door monsters . I'm glad to see it return as a 2 door .. I'd love to see THAT STYLE ON THE STREETS !
ralph has been the best car designer. In the last 2 decades.
At least Dodge is trying to put some style into their EV's. The others all look the same with some changes between the lights.
Damn love the reviews
im still addicted to seeing those wide body fenders, hope this gets them!
I just have to say, Tommy, this interview was amazing and loved every minute of it! PS, the car is a 10/10!
The rear roof line just needs to be moved back a few inches then it'll look great. Going 100% EV right away will probably be a mistake. I would bet this is going to be a fairly expensive vehicle.
i feel like you can make that front aero bit active
Kudos to Ford for listen to it's muscle car customers , by keeping the new 7 gen 2024 Ford Mustang GT V8 RWD and 6 speed manual transmission , plus the Dark Horse model is going to put a major smack down on Dodge/Stellantis !!!
Don't change a thing. This thing looks bad ass
Very cool retro look! Make both an EV and with a 392 and they would sell LIKE CRAZY! I would purchase one with the 392
The charger is a winner for Dodge
One thing I learned about EVs is it will take a very long time for more people to get used to them. That might be why most people hate EVs because the world isn’t completely ready for them just yet.
The Fast lane Car ,guys keep up the great work 😀😀🇺🇸🇺🇸💪💪👍👍👍👍
I love this thing, honestly, it's growing on me. Those have to be the best looking wheels i have ever seen on any car, period. I wonder how fast it will be?
At least they bringing back a two door charger.
I'm wondering how much of a difference is going to be between the low end price to top end, or if it's pretty much going to be one SKU.
love it ! not in love with fake LOUD NOISES
I would love to see the car in person but this video gives a good look at it from a proportion standpoint. What I do hope is that a good bit of this car does make it to production. It needs the side scallops and a spoiler and that roof line and rear window design need to just change ever so slightly. I honestly don't mind the 2-door idea as much. For what it is, its actually nice.
I think this looks absolutely stunning! Of all the conceptual stuff, I hope they keep the R- Wing. That would truly be an eye catching design piece and really set itself apart. As someone who has been apprehensive about electric cars, it’s nice to see the direction they’ve been going in and hopefully this one will be more affordable (sub $30/20k would be nice). This is the best looking electric car if they can keep most of this in to production. Great job!
This is gonna be a 60k car minimum. Probably up to just under 100k fully loaded with the maximum power selections.
Once the Godless left are buried this November, America will get its Natural Resources back.
Sub $30k?Are you on Earth right now? This is at least $50,000 for a base model with maybe a single motor.
@@anthonyesiemokhai1603 lol I can dream can’t I? The only way I’d be able to afford an electric car is they became more affordable, and for me that’s sub $25/$20k
@@Jako_22 Right now it looks like Chevy is the only one interested in a EV in the 20s and 30s. The Bolt can be had in the 20s, and the new Equinox is supposed to start around 30k. Everyone else is ignoring that price range entirely
I love it! I'll get one when it's available.
Not really sure why dodge just doesn't keep the v8 around making there models lighter & more efficient exclusively for the ram, charger and challenger. What they could've done was make ev out of the Durango, Caravan which would sell more bc of the popularity of SUV's. If they could it'll be ideal to keep the v6 v8 also i6 and make them into hybrid vehicles keeping them relatively affordable. If they're that pressed about the governmental regulations.
Stallantis gave them a mandatory timeline to improve their fleet economy otherwise the brand goes. Hybrids aren't going to cut it for dodge's fleet average, and the Dodge fan base would react the same to a hybrid as they are to the EV. Plus every year that goes buy is another year of Dodge having to buy Tesla's carbon credits, and no one wants that right now. No sense transitioning slowly. They already had to poach the Hornet from Alpha Romeo, which will have a plug in option.
As a lifelong Mopar fan of over 55 years, I LOVE IT!!!!
Question: if the new Charger became 2 door classic style muscle car, will be return the Magnum? Maybe Sedan version but most important Station Wagon
I like, but don’t like how the rims stick out from tire’s curb catcher
I think the wheel design steals the show! Wish they would’ve shown the rear hatch in action.
Man, that thing is awesome looking.
The only mistake they made is this should have been called the Wraith instead of Banshee. It fits perfect with the nod to the M4S prototype, sounds almost identical to the movie car and is even the same color prototype wise
When I explained the sound to my son, I told him it was a mix of the car from the wraith and the jetsons. 😁
Honestly it's great. It's not another crossover, and it's not a jellybean sedan. Considering the only gripes that people have are that it's electric and the fake noise, I'd say it's good
Just got to move the C-pillar back slightly and it would be perfect.
What a fun place to work, it sounds like they really are a piece of the audience.
I love the look and sound
I don’t get it, why not keep the same 2022 Charger and Challenger models but make those full electric? This is basically a 1968 Dodge Charger from the future. Might as well just call it the 2068 Dodge Charger.
That platform is an ancient Daimler design, and wouldn't accommodate that much alteration. So much money would have to be spent adjusting it to fit batteries and test the new stress points etc, that it makes more sense to build a new platform ground up. Or if they were to do a straight conversion, they probably wouldn't be able to fit many batteries into it and the weight distribution would be subject to however the batteries are placed. Sort a lose lose from an engineering/budget perspective
@@markcoopers1930 yeah, I’m not sure how big the batteries are or how they’re placed but the Tesla Model 3 is smaller than a Charger and Challenger. I’m sure if they clear out the engine bay they could make it all work. Also, they’re rushing the Charger Banshee. They still got a couple years before they would need to go EV so they could use that time to develop better batteries that wouldn’t compromise the essence of Dodge.
@@SRT_DRE You would think it's big enough, but if you stick all the batteries in front then the front part of the car would weigh tons while the back weighed only a thousand. Not to mention that these are heavy cars to begin with. The Tesla fits the batteries in the floor, and the dodge's have a lot of floor space. But the frame gets in the way, and the only way to make it work would be to take several inches to half a foot on interior space from the bottom. At best they could have pulled a genisis g-90 electric, but the amount of batteries for that heavy car would mean a very sub-par range. The blow-back from that would be a massive hit to the brand. They'd much rather come out with something being king of the hill.
It's really cool. Congrats to Gill and his time.
I absolutely love this new Dodge Charger. I hope I'm able to buy one when they come out. And thank you very much for doing this amazing video interviewing Ralph. I love hearing his input and opinion about this car and what went into designing it from his point of view.
GOOD JOB TOMMY AND ZACH ...
The sound, its just going to be an adjustment. I think about my time with hobby grade Rc. I always had Nitro and race gas powered buggies. The sounds, the smells were awesome. Then along came brushless electric with Lipo batteries. Faster and really better in everyway. But before these awesome brushless machines were brushed with standard batteries. Slow with terrible run times. I think we're somewhat in the middle. We will get there, someday we will want an EV over a gasser. Just not today. Look at manual transmissions. Basically gone, the automatic counterpart desired by most as better in every way. But you're always going to have that diehard.
Cool concept, the cost of these things makes it hard to dip your toes in though. Better to stick with the devil you know.
The sound is terrible but you’ll be able to download different engine sounds. In Tesla’s you could download a cammed Hellcat sound and the car sounds like a cammed Hellcat. The only flaw with Tesla is the sound doesn’t change when you accelerate like a real car. Hopefully Dodge can capitalize on that to make the experience better for the enthusiast .
I wanted. I just hope it's affordable
The reveal of the new “Charger” is what motivated me to buy a Challenger! The EV market and owning an EV is going to be a complete cluster/disaster with the power grid in the next 10 years. Besides, I don’t like driving an appliance, even if it is stupid fast.
Imagine you buy a car with a faulty battery. That would suck. Those Tesla battery cost around $20k to replace. I see people in my area trying to sell older Model S Teslas for under $25k because of this. Going EV pretty much guarantees you have to buy a new car every 6 or 7 years.
We still all love you mr Gilles 😊
Love it, I want to reserve & buy one. I like that they have 9 different $ levels for this beauty. Best looking ev 2 or 4 door hatchback period!!! ⚡️👍⚡️👍
PLYMOUTH ROAD RUNNER AND A G T X WOULD BE SWEET !
EV’s are not muscle cars and can never replace them in my opinion.
Neither are 4 doors
A muscle car doesn't necessarily require a V8 to qualify as one, simply at the time the term was coined V8s were some of the most powerful engines available. Now with EVs, not all motors are equally powerful, and they put the most powerful motor they could find here.
Great interview though.
Fantastic! But I'd say amplify those motor noises for the interior. A true screaming cat
As a Dodge fan and a combustion purist, I am actually pretty excited about the car. Many countries are pushing pretty hard to electrify all cars, trying to regulate combustion into the ground. So I see why Dodge is trying to start converting now. Much of their fan base are V8-loving, muscle car purists, so converting their lineups to electric is, and will be difficult for them. But I think they nailed this.
Ralph is a cool guy... Still, not buying an electric "muscle" car.
LOVE IT!!!
Will the door jams melt off like the past 10 years?
or will the touch buttons on the door go first?
After a year of searching for a vehicle with these insane prices, poor reliability, and tech that drives you insane, I FINALLY made a choice! A 2003 F150 extended cab with a V6, 5-speed manual, manual windows, door locks, and mirrors. I love it! This thing is a cream puff! Got it from a co-worker who inherited from his aunt. $4400. 126,000 miles in immaculate condition!
Just needs an affordable package that pulls back the flamboyant interior for me.
This Charger EV sounds like a Cooking Blender... looks good but i would pick up any 392 over this at any day...
Im actually excited for the ev charger because i like design and performance specs the only thing i want is it to sound better or have a totally unique sound
Great looking car. It should get the new inline 6 Hurricane engine as an option.
Tommy does a great job with interviews! Lose the old guys and put him out there more often!
He has definitely grown-into his role and his been absolutely killing it!!
I have seen a few interviews like this now , and it feels like the manufacturers are forced to make those electric cars , it feels like they are forbidden to even talk about ICE cars
Love that car - Kept waiting and waiting for a price range . I get it that, it would be + or - $10,000 dollars from now until production / delivery. Left me and probably a lot of the audience wondering????
They nailed the design! Freakishly stunning. Gonna be hard to say goodbye to the Challenger & ICE cars in general. I, myself, am not ready for electric but maybe the market is..🤷♂️
I think the lines are just perfect , awesome shape and form , stunning looking car , can only dream of owning one
cut 12" off behind the door, back seat is for car seats
