Got a tattoo of a snake And a ski mask on my face But I woke up in a ditch Behind the Stop 'n Go Lying in the weeds With a bullet in my gut Watching dollar bills Fly away in the dust Now the sun's sinking down Spilling gold on the ground But I'm going out tonight Out past the last lights of town There was a girl with dark eyes And hair shining black And it ran like a river Wild down her back But these wide empty streets And the air shaking with heat They made me hungry Hungry to do something mean Now the sun's sinking down Spilling gold on the ground But I'm going out tonight Out past the last lights of town The Stop 'n Go's closed The coyotes they moan And the wind's rolling beer Cans down the street But the sun's sinking down Spilling gold on the ground And I'm going out tonight Out past the last lights of town
I saw them in Seattle in 2005, really amazing. They had a guy playing steel guitar with them. In this video, the contrast between the plastic west of today, empty of people, only populated by cars and signs, and the 1930s when the landscapes had people in them is haunting. The fact that the singing is out of sync with the images further signifies that something went wrong. And yet, there is a commonality. The Family displays a kinship with those older people, in that they are kind-hearted and plainly dressed. They even wave goodbye to us in a friendly way. I'd love to sit at their kitchen table.
Being transgressive and educated, it only has a place in irony. The apologies are over, I know how you want. I apologize for my archaic English, I am not English speaking
I guess you could file this sound under Americana, which now is a Grammy category. It is simple and has a lot of soul, I love this tune. The man's voice is world-worn and lived-in.
Only just heard this particular track first time today and have listened to it about twenty times in a row so far ..the joy of having aspergers and finding something you really like X
Extremely good band, Far from any road, is a classic, fits True Detective like a hand in a glove. This is a haunting thing this song Gold I assume the meaning maybe something to do with misfortune a beautiful woman and I guess the gold flowing on the ground is his belly wounded blood, and , out past the last lights of town, is his life , going out tonight. Gone.
This video was filmed in Albuquerque. I loved there for years most of the footage is from central ave. My apartment was on central ave and Louisiana right next to the caravan club pictured here
Played this song along with several of their others for several days now. Just discovered these folks last week, I will be buying the CD,s. Refreshing, genuine and original, Thanks. Great car btw!
I was a fan of your music before True Detective was a thing, but that show helped me appreciate it even more. Love how you guys mix irony and melancholy into a perfect bland of great lyrics and experimental music.
Well, thanks to a documentary on the Tacoma narrows bridge featuring “In The Air” I now have a new obsession and got every album by The Handsome Family available on iTunes
Most thing ı love about this band is all of their songs are stories... I listen to them before sleep, ıt feels like someone is telling me stories until ı fell asleep.
You guys are awesome! I love the sound of your music! Sounds like something from a western movie. Lol I think you guys brought the "western" part back in "Country and Western"
Thanks for posting this jewel from the Handsome Family. Many of you likely discovered them from the great series "True Detective". I first ran across their music in the soundtrack of "Searching for the Wrong Eyed Jesus". The sign with the missing letter at 0:57 reminds me of a sign at a steak house decades ago in Portland, Oregon called "Black Angus". It was a neon sign and the letter g had burnt out. I wonder how business was affected before they fixed it . . .
Any video that starts out at Fox's Booze and Cruise is bound to be wonderful. Glad you worked Griff's Burger Bar in there too. Love the new album, guys
It is superficially similar. The first chord change (a minor to c major) is the same, (the same change as hundreds of songs (House of the Rising Son, etc). That's where the similarity ends--different melody, different chords. Thanks for Playing the Plagiarism Game, but incorrect.
I love when I discover a new band and they have a 20+ year anthology. I am truly blessed.
I'm late to the party but wanted to comment because I 100% agree with the last comment. It's baffling to me these guys aren't super well known by now
I want to know more bands like that. Cigarettes After Sex was one I found late last year and I love them
Do you know any other bands? I would love to find some new to me music
I only heard "Far From Any Road" from True Detective and now I'm in love with this kind of music.
I definitely buy the new album!!
same here
Eric Schuster I always liked this style of Americana. I just didn’t realize anyone was recording it. I’m a fan of this band now.
Most of their songs are too country for me.
They are awesome! Gold reminds me of when i was 19 and robbed the stop and go.
czcams.com/video/1jfMSzP7SKA/video.html recommendation from me
The drowny echo in his voice has so much character, you can hear the open of every battle scar exhume from his throat when he sings.
"The sun sinking down, spilling gold on the ground!" ++++
This is more than music.
This went through my soul.
I love you guys.
i agree, best thing i heard in a long long time
MINE TOO, WOW, LOVE THEM
This type of country/folk music blows away all the mainstream country artists by miles
This duo revives the spirit of classic country music. Truly fantastic stuff.
Got a tattoo of a snake
And a ski mask on my face
But I woke up in a ditch
Behind the Stop 'n Go
Lying in the weeds
With a bullet in my gut
Watching dollar bills
Fly away in the dust
Now the sun's sinking down
Spilling gold on the ground
But I'm going out tonight
Out past the last lights of town
There was a girl with dark eyes
And hair shining black
And it ran like a river
Wild down her back
But these wide empty streets
And the air shaking with heat
They made me hungry
Hungry to do something mean
Now the sun's sinking down
Spilling gold on the ground
But I'm going out tonight
Out past the last lights of town
The Stop 'n Go's closed
The coyotes they moan
And the wind's rolling beer
Cans down the street
But the sun's sinking down
Spilling gold on the ground
And I'm going out tonight
Out past the last lights of town
Merci pour les paroles, cowboy.
😊

I think this is my favorite song on this album. Despite the whole album being amazing, I keep coming back to this song.
Greatest band but how are they still so unknown after decades?? best storytellers ever
Reminds me of David Lynch! In some way.. Great!
N. -Lynch has a great feel for this genre. It’s that feeling of Lost Highways and Jungian memories of our recent ancestors.
Love their music just from this initial quick listen. Nice chord changes and mood music. Kind of looks like Walter White at the end with the beard. 😮😊
Pardon my username,
You guys are the absolute best country band.
No worries man your name is awesome.
Being transgressive and educated, it only has a place in irony. The apologies are over, I know how you want.

A very tasty tune. Thanks!
Just some few musicians touch my heart nowadays, but Brett and Rennie have my true regards, since around 3 years ago! The "crows" loves you, Family.
True Detective - brought me to your music. Love it. All songs are almost the same, but each has its far from any others....
This song is great. It feels so good to hear the soothing sounds of new HFam. I look forward to hearing all the new stories.

I got to see them decades ago at Shank Hall in Milwaukee before they were well known 💜
Amazing! And thevideo makes Me wanna go back to Lancaster Ca.
The masters of American Gothic. Hank Williams meets Edgar Allen Poe making anthems about America's raw, urban underbelly
i discovered you guys from that true detective intro. i love the haunting sound of it and those lyrics are pure gold
Didn't care to much for Wilderness. But this song reminds me of the Twilight days. Gives me hope. I'll definitely have to pre-order the vinyl.
Cool lyrics and sound
When you hear a song that reminds you of many other songs but you just can´t for the life of you remember what those songs might be...
Loving this. 2-years after it was first posted.

I kept thinking I recognized this sound. I finally remembered where I’d heard it. Bruce Springsteen- The River. I still really like your music.

Makes me think of the band "Calexico", Ballad of Cable Hogue comes to mind.
Beautiful, depressing, impressive.
