    This is awesome. I always wondered how they did it. It's impressive how good the audio is from all the years I've been watching. And the irony that there's clothing rustling noise when it's the Audio guy on cam.

      Glad you enjoyed it. Ha! Not sure why I’m wearing this big crunchy coat and Dino is in a tee shirt - I think I was ready to go home. And this is just camera-mic audio (no lavs) for this interview 😉

    • @imark7777777

      @HubLocationSound I think it's day off mentality. Yeah I'll wear that coat today, oh shoot surprise BTS interview and I'm putting a Lav on myself!
      Decided to rewatch, noticed the scratchy coat from the beginning this time, last time I didn't realize it until 5:00 So I just assumed it was the Lav mic HAHA!
      for on camera audio that's pretty good!
      Knowing all the noises around construction personally and also being gifted with super sensitive hearing and love for Audio.... A lot of stuff can get hidden simply by visual context wide versus close which can fit with the context. oh yeah there's a truck going through the background so it's OK to have a little rumble.
      I'm more live sound but totally interested in production / video sound as well. Watching a ton of videos online and i got myself a nice fn8 pro recorder last year. Hoping to get out there and record things now that I'm gonna have some more free time...
      And then every so often I stumble onto these little gems hiding on the Internet.
      I used to run around as a kid with a borrowed cassette recorder, trying to record everything. I unfortunately regret not saving a lot of that stuff ( granted it would've helped to have a microphone plugged in on a couple of those recorders, no internal mic! ).

    Great interview Jim, Dino seems like a great guy to work with. l have the same 688/SL6 with SRC's for my smaller cart. I love that set up, I've done some of my best work with it and it's the perfect set up for a job on the go.

      Thanks, Michael. Dino is the man! This was shot last Winter (in New England, hence my big/crispy coat) and while I still have my 688 and several Lectrosonics channels, but I recently moved to a Zaxcom Nova system. I haven’t encountered 10-person cast days with it yet so not quite sure how I’m going to feel with the Nova’s 5-encoder banks ;) But a bag that is now 1/3rd the weight is very welcome 😉

      This Old House has been using Sony FS7’s for years but earlier this year they moved to the newer Sony FX9’s. Ask This Old House recently moved from FX9 to Lumix S1H’s.

    Amazing how “on brand” you guys are for TOH! I’d love to hear more about how you handle shooting with/in/around construction noise bot for “a roll” and “b roll”.

    • @HubLocationSound
      @HubLocationSound  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks, Thomas. Yes, Dino is a salt-of-the-earth Bostonian and has been on camera for TOH for about 20 years (and also covers a lot of pro sports teams in Boston). I'm a native as well, but have only been involved with this show for about 2 years now. The "brand" is just genuine New England characters. What you see is what you get. This piece was originally shot for TOH's social platforms, for their viewers, so we tried not to let the technical speak go too far, but on my CZcams channel I'm happy to expound... Our "set" is an active construction site, but on shoot days the construction crew will accommodate us (within reason) by working away from the areas we need for a particular scene. Occasionally we need to remind someone to stop Saw-zalling a pipe above us during dialogue, but we have a great repoire with the contractors and their crews. There are no 'Divas' on this show and after 40 years, they really seem to have it down to a science. The camera (Sony FS7 or FX9 as of this year) receives my audio mix (of cast Lavs) and also has a shotgun mic on-board if our lav'd cast members aren't 'in play' (to capture nearby B-Roll sounds). It's rare I ever boom on this show as the lighting is often harsh (workshop lights), ceilings are low and reflections/shadows are abundant. Wireless lavaliers get us the most consistent coverage and mobility. Similar approach to verite documentary.

    Excellent video. Looking at all that sound gear made realize why you made the big switch to a much lighter bag rig.

    • @HubLocationSound
      @HubLocationSound  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks, Allen. Yes the weight, but also coordinating was becoming hairier in the analog realm (especially in a tight footprint on whips). Now I scan/autopick freqs and send the new freqs to all the packs wirelessly with just a few button clicks. Also removed a transmitter using a system that feeds both ifb and cam hops.

    Really nice video and info Jim & Dino! Jim, can you explain your comms setup a bit? How do you have everything setup when you say camera "sends to crew" and director "talks to cam." I'd love to hear your wireless and routing setup, (i know this is your old bag)

    • @HubLocationSound
      @HubLocationSound  Před rokem +2

      Hi Jon, we had a somewhat unorthodox ifb setup at the time of this video. It was sort of a holdover from before I got involved. The show actually had a lectro sm transmitter taking it’s feed directly from the headphone output of the camera. They had a 1/8” splitter so Dino could also use a headphone from that same jack. That TX would feed to 4-5 R1a’s for producers/director. Then there was another one-way IFB going from directors headset mic (into an smv tx) and that’d be received by an R1a plugged into Dinos remaining ear. The show has since stopped using the director mic system (they’re usually close enough to communicate) and if Dinos way up in a tree or something, they bust out walkies. I have since started provided all the IFB’s and transmit that mix from my soundbag which as you know is a much more traditional approach.

    Hi Jim! I'm curious on your thoughts with your headphones. I'm going to be doing some recording of sports cars and I'm looking for something that isolates well to save my ears. Would you still go with them if you had to do it again? I appreciate your help! :)

    • @HubLocationSound
      @HubLocationSound  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Jason, I bought these because I was working on loud shoots. But I got so used to the added isolation that I use them on every shoot now. They are the same drivers found in Sony MDR7506’s but custom mounted into Pilot headphones. I highly recommend them, especially if you’re working at something like Nascar. They’re pretty big but they allow you to listen at lower levels in general which helps with fatigue. Fairly comfy too with gel-filled ear pads. They (Remote Audio) make another version that has a headset-style talkback mic installed (avail in dynamic or elecret). www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/283347-REG/BI/21832/KBID/28200

    • @HubLocationSound

      @@jasondordel9630 Nope, no loss of isolation that I'm aware of. The gel ear pads are replaceable. I've only ripped one so far. These headphones are quite robust and take a beating.
