      It is going to be years before they bother trying to achieve that goal. As long as they can sell every dual motor they can make they will only work on increasing the production of the dual motor trucks.
      Then they start producing the single motor trucks at a reduced cost to increase demand. But that motor difference can’t be more than $10,000. Random guess this battery saves them $10,000. That is still a $60,000 truck. Maybe take inflation into account. $40,000 becomes $48,714.
      That’s still a $12,000 difference. I don’t see how they achieve that with 500 mile range until they are making 1M a year.

    4680 has 8 times the volume of 18650, yet only ~22Ah. The process is still ~20% behind 18650 in energy density. So there's definitely room for improvement.

    • @Chamieiniibet
      @Chamieiniibet Před 29 dny

      But what about power density? I.e., Watts per kg. 4680 should be able to handle higher charge/discharge currents with less waste.

    • @dianapennepacker6854
      @dianapennepacker6854 Před 29 dny +2

      Yeah I don't get why he is so excited. The energy density is not great. They took too long. 260-289 wh/kg is all these batteries are at.
      There are batteries that are 400 to 711 wh/kg with factories being built to ramp up now. Some sodium batteries that can rival it too.
      Tesla is lagging significantly now as far as I am concerned where it counts which is battery domination. I thought they partnered with CATL who are the ones with the 500 and 711 wh/kg battery.
      Now with that said I know there is more to it than just pure density. Tesla is dominate at getting production costs down, and making huge margins.
      Unless this cuts down their vehicles costs significantly then it is not a big deal at all. It doesn't seem like it will be competitive.
      For energy storage however it could be a big deal if the reduction in costs is as significant as he says.
      A 711 wh/kg is game changing.
      So are axial flux motors as far as weight to power goes. No break throughs in that from Tesla.
      Tesla use to innovate left and right. Other companies are catching up, and in China begrudgingly possibly surpassing.
      Feel like I am out of the loop.

    I've been saying it for a very long time but 300miles of range is not that great.
    Its enough if you only want to go to your job and back.
    If the 4680v2 save production money and is more energy dense.
    Then sell Model 3 and Y for the same price but with bigger batteries !

    This shows that the next affordable new battery technology is NOT just around the corner. They have already maxed out the Periodic Table of Elements. To give some idea, lithium-ion batteries for example were invented back in 1970. Lithium is the least noble metal known to mankind. NO METALS are lower. It also has the tiniest atomic particle size to go through battery separator membranes. Only helium and hydrogen gases are lower on the Table of Elements. The cathode used is graphite. Again, the Periodic Table is about maxed out with graphite being at the tippity tip=top of the Galvanic Series Chart. Above even titanium! So good luck with that next revolution in batteries.

    Good on Tesla engineers, but Elon is losing it . . . er, correction . . . mentally he HAS totally lost it. He needs to take a Steve Jobs absence from the company. Get his head screwed back on, and come back less of a dictatorial paranoid AH else he will be the eventual downfall of a truly great company.
