WE TAKE ON WATER: Installing a Dripless Shaft Seal without Hauling Out Our 1977 38' Sailboat - Ep 38

  • No more leaks, but we sure did bring some salt water aboard. We installed a PSS dripless shaft seal in our sailboat without hauling out. If you are new here, we are converting our 1977 sailboat to be completely electric. Our previous shaft seal caused a slow leak; therefore, we decided to fix this prior to installing out new motor and lithium battery setup. Seemed risky, but ended up as a successful boat project.

    Have you ever thought you would want to sell everything, live tiny/mobile, and sail the world on a sailboat as a liveaboard? We did too! We live on our 1977 Custom Ingrid Atkins 38' Sailboat full-time in Hawaii. We are working to restore our sailboat, Windrose, and bring her back to her early sailing days! We want to share with you the day to day life and reality of living aboard a sailboat. It's all about lifestyle balance while sailing. We want to show you the highs and lows, as we restore our boat in preparation to sail and explore this beautiful world.

    Do you have tapered wood plugs on board in case a thru-hull fails?
    Classic remark as you were sinking, "get to work there, buddy!"😂

    FWIW, paint the engine compartment white. The first washer you drop you will thank me.

    Another success! I'll be curious to see how you like the dripless system. I've considered switching mine to dripless but still sticking with shaft packing and monitoring the drips. But at least your bilge will be dry.
    Please keep up the style of content for us. The feeling of how sailboat life actually is has been wonderful to see. You guys are doing great

    Hi guys, You are such a funny lady with hilarious one liners, Seth is a lucky man! Oh great job BTW ... Stay Safe & Fair Winds!! ☘

  • @footstepsofanexplorer

    I love Seth's seal of approval, "Yup, should be good to go." We would have totally made a water bucket line with you guys, like straight Mickey Mouse (Fantasia 2000 with the broom sticks) hahahaaa!!! Thankfully I saw Seth after this project was complete and he seemed calm, so my anxiety was lowered a bit, but holy cow that was stressful to watch!

    Great job. Did you order an Electric Yacht motor? Curious how you will fit enough solar on your Ingrid! We are trying to fit 350w worth now :)

    • @sailingposttime
      @sailingposttime  Před rokem +1

      No, we ordered a motor through Thunder struck motors. It’s tricky with how the boat is for solar! The mizzen and main and the booms make it difficult. For now we have shore power to recharge as we get the motor in. Then we’ll have to problem solve for solar!

    Dont you have a working bilge pump?????

    • @sailingposttime
      @sailingposttime  Před rokem +2

      Yes! I was it’s nervous that the water would come more quickly than the bilge pump could keep up with. It was running the whole time.

    Does the shaft seal need to be water fed? Or is that as is and just used the hose as a vent?

    • @sailingposttime
      @sailingposttime  Před rokem +2

      The hose acts as the vent 🙂

    • @GHanBax
      @GHanBax Před rokem +1

      @@sailingposttime why do others water feed the seal? While others vent it only? And if you have an idea what size the hose is, that would greatly help. Thanks.

    • @sailingposttime
      @sailingposttime  Před rokem +3

      @@GHanBax Sailboats usually run at a lower rpm so they don’t need to be water fed just water vented. The tube is 3/4 OD and 1/2 ID

    • @GHanBax

      @@sailingposttime What would be considered low rpm? And how many knots would that be.

    You were lucky nothing went wrong. You did not know how rapidly the sea water was going to enter the vessel. It could have been 5 times the flow rate you experienced. Ignorance is bliss!

      I know, sometimes you just have to cross your fingers and plug away. 😅 Luckily, we had a way to put it back on if things got out of hand!
