  • I've been messing around with my stuffing box the past 5 years, repacking, adjusting, pumping out the bilge full of water!
    The time has finally come for a new dripless shaft seal. I install PYIs Packless Sealing System Shaft Seal onboard my 1988 Catalina 30!

    Wonderful to see a woman doing this sort of engineering. Bravo! I am installing a PYI PSS tomorrow, so thanks for the inspiration! Dorian (Coos Bay, OR)

    🙋🏻‍♂️. I own a boat repair business in Los Angeles CA. I’m also rebuilding a Catalina 38. I love networking with new boaters and helping them on their journeys. I started with little to no support a few years back and know how, up and down owning a boat can be.

    My PSS seal on my Contessa 26 I bought two months ago is drip drip dripping. I burped her and because I was on a mooring I went"Shit " as water flooded out. I was thinking, "Oh my god why can't I just change to an old stuffing box so I could fix her while on water." Now, I got her back and breathed a sigh of relief when the water stopped and the dripping got lower, it worked that was good, but through the night I woke every time the bilge pump went off , she went off about eight times a day. Now, I must mention, there was no solar on the boat when I bought her and the battery was showing 11.30 so she was dead and I had to leave my pretty contessa for another three weeks before I would be back on board. So, I bought a new battery ,a deep cycle and a trickle solar panel. Ok she should be fine. . According to PSS I need to use a bit of rag and or 8oo sandpaper to clean the surfaces. Ok so I am going to do that this weekend, but I am going to put her on the hard for antifouling and I am going to put on the maintenance kit that Pss sells where the rubber puts pressure back on the seal. Ok, so how do I know which one to get? Ok so measure the shaft diameter and the other diameter is that it?, and can I do this on the water as I wont be on the hard until october 2022? I mean it's a little scary . I remember Tania who sailed around the world in her contessa fixed her stuffing box on water in mid flight. (I mean is there a serial number to find what kit to get or do I have to take an inaccurate mm size when leaning into my engine... Your video was a little godsend in some ways. Reading Tom Davi's reply just made me get more nervous.

      I mean I didn’t have to remove it I do regular maintenance through the cubby doors and it isn’t too bad but I’m glad I took it apart to get a good look at everything otherwise I wouldn’t have found chafed exhaust hose!

    Does the shaft seal need to be water fed? Or is that as is and just used the hose as a vent?

    When it wears you’ll wish you had a standard stuffing box. I’ve seen 2 yachts sink due to failed dripless seals. There’s a difference between dripless and maintenance free. You’d also be surprised how many engines are either misaligned or the builder used junk cheap engine mounts
    Cheers

      I have the same PYI shaft seal on my Pearson 33-2 running a Yanmar 2GM20 diesel. it's been operating reliably since it was installed in 2007. if you like the maintenance hassle of a traditional stuffing box, you should stick with that.

    You mentioned a vent. I'm confused... isn't the nipple connected to a water hose to lubricate the shaft? Where does the water come from? A water hose? HELP. We bought a bought (owner died) and the hose is not connected.

    • @LandandSeawithKee
      @LandandSeawithKee  Před 9 měsíci

      On most sailboats this is just a vent led above the water line to burb air out. On powerboats this needs to be connected to a water source for cooling.

    Your maintenance videos are the best. I am doing this project this winter. My concern is getting that coupling back on the shaft. What exactly do you mean by bash.. and how did you get a piece of wood and a hammer in there to bash it on? I can't seem to find any videos of the coupling being actually put back on the shaft. Thanks!

    • @LandandSeawithKee
      @LandandSeawithKee  Před rokem +1

      Hi Matthew
      I warmed up my coupling and the shaft was quite cold as it was early spring which helped. I lined up the shaft in the coupler and then use a wood block from outside on the end of the shaft and bashed it with a rubber mallet and tap it into place! I did small taps and went back and forth to make sure the key hole lined up.

      @matthewsilva8225 Před rokem

      @@LandandSeawithKee Did you have a machinist measure the inside diameter of the coupler against the diameter of the shaft? Or did you just reuse the coupler because it all seemed snug? I am assuming you haven't had any issues to date.

    Dont use stainless bolts on driveshafts. They are brittle and will snap off without warning. You want about grade 5 fine, and torque/turn them into their elastic region.

  • @jellysmith4350
    @jellysmith4350 Před 2 lety

    Thanks for the video. I'd have really liked an expanded section on how you removed the coupling using your bolt trick! Where did you learn how to do that? Is there some place you can send me, to learn more?

      @keannarink9412 Před 2 lety +2

      Hi John
      I had someone recommend using a socket and some bolts on a Catalina Facebook forum so don’t have any specific links but it was pretty straight forward. Spray some PB blaster or other kind of penetrating oil around shaft. Use good quality fine threaded stainless steel bolts and go around tightening in a circle!

      @@keannarink9412 thanks so much! Bit daunting, but let's see how it goes...if nothing else, I find taking things apart, a great way to learn how everything works.
