Absolutely incredible all that he did. 10 years, geez! He prevailed through the Darian Gap. Huge resilience & fortitude.
He did (does) what 99% of people will only dream of.

i saw Helge on his "book tour" in the US around 1998; I rode down in the dead of winter to see his slide show in Salt Lake City. He was kind enough to autograph my book copy. thanks for this video, it adds context

One enviable life, no doubt. By the way, how the hell did Helge sustain himself during his travels in those days? I mean travelling needs money - for food, for fuel, for gears, for lodging - how could he manage all that without having a job?
Nilanjan Saha he was a photographer. He sold articles to magazines.

I loved the book, I even bought an R80GS. CZcams is full of adventure riders taking their motorcycles to the ends of the earth, but Helge is the original. Have you heard from Jeff Munn? It seems he has dropped of the earth he would be the only other rider in your class.

@@SterlingNoren I have bough the book, actually it was given to me as a gift from my friends twenty years ago. I was visiting the BMW museum some fifteen years ago and have seen Olga while it was still there. I have made a visit also last year, but much to my disappointment Helga was not there any more. The book was stolen from me (or not returned, the same thing) few years ago, but what is non recoverable is answer to my mail to Helge: I was sending my regards, and he replied. I did a print out, and put it into the book. Of course, now I don't have either the electronic reply, or the print out that was glued in the book. I do remember Helge's reply: 'the biggest mistake is not to try'
