  • Here’s some progress on the Rex begonias in water culture. These plants are pretty amazing and thrive in this setup.

    I never would have thought begonias would do well in an all water set up. It’s amazing! I’m excited to pluck a leaf and try my hand at it myself 😍

      It’s so much fun!!! I would always propagate in water but would always transfer to soil. It’s such a cool, clean way to grow them in water culture. 😃👍🏼

      @@bettymontgomery7606 hello there. I only change the water if it isn’t clean. As long as it’s clear and no smells, I just top it off. In the beginning it’s more important to change out the water if it’s not crystal clear. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

      Hello there. Probably the best thing when you’re starting out is to take a leaf or two and grow roots in water from the leaves. This way the whole plant won’t have a problem and the leaves will grow and do great in water.

    I need more information. I have 3 leaves in water (for months now). I want to move them to soil. One has leaves growing underwater on the roots. Two have some shorter roots and a leaf growing from the old leaf. How do I move them to soil?

    • @paultheplantparent2702
      @paultheplantparent2702  Před 2 lety

      You can place them in damp well drawing soil and sometimes it helps to cover them with a clear bag to keep the humidity up (until they adjust). When more leaves continue to grow you’ll know they’ve taken and you can remove the bag.

      @@paultheplantparent2702 A couple of more questions if you don't mind. The one plant growing under water with a new plant on the roots -- WHICH part should be buried in well draining soil? The roots only?
      - WHICH part of the leaf/stem do I 'bury' where the new leaf is on-top of the momma leaf and short roots under water at the bottom of the cutting. If you have a video just point the way.

    I have a few begonias that are really struggling in soil. My leaves quickly go crispy no matter what I've tried. Can I literally just take them out and put them in water?

    • @paultheplantparent2702
      @paultheplantparent2702  Před rokem

      Yup. But you would need to clean all the soil off the roots first. If they start to wilt, just cover the plant with a plastic bag for humidity until it adjusts. But I’ve done that a lot.👍🏼

    • @paultheplantparent2702

      @@HastyBanana not really. As long as there’s no soil, they can adjust to the rhizome in water. Keeping that water fresh is most important. Let me know how it goes. 😃

    can you keep begonias in water like this long term? i have a begonia who has been in soil for a couple of months and her decline has been slow but steady. recently she showed signs of being overwatered, despite the fact that i had her set in a waterwicking system with a reservoir completely separate from her pot to prevent leaf damage or improper drainage.
    i just moved her to water culture a couple hours ago for rehabilitation and she already looks better...
    if it really likes the water would you say i could leave it there permanently and simply deliver fertilization straight to the water? my begonias always seem to hate being in soil.

    • @paultheplantparent2702
      @paultheplantparent2702  Před 3 lety

      Hello. I always had the same problem. You can keep in water culture as long as you like, just keep the roots and water clean. You can also treat the roots with very diluted hydrogen peroxide, if you notice a slight decline or too much algae. I’m talking about 1 teaspoon to 12 ounces of water. Just for an hour or two and only if it’s struggling. Otherwise you should have no problem in water culture and you can feed with 1/4 strength hydroponic nutrients (grow or vigor, not bloom, since you really want leaves on Rex begonias, not flowers). 😃. Let me know how it goes. Clean water is most important, I’ve noticed.
