Ermey deliberately showed them he could also turn it up to 11. The door gunner later in the movie was a consolation prize for the originally cast drill instructor. "Easy, you just don't lead em so much! Ain't war hell?!" He was a marine, but he was also a damn good actor as well!
Saw this movie when it first came out in Camp Lejeune. It was a Marine Corps version of The Rocky Horror Show at the theater. Unforgettably hysterical.

My Dad was an Okinawan Marine & when he came home years later, never talked about the horrors heâd seen, but was full of stories about the funny things that heâd experienced while in the Corps! He was, at the end, was staged in China preparing for the invasion of Japan, which we found out just recently would have been a bloodbath had it not been due to Nagasaki & Hiroshima! To this day I think God had a hand in the final days? God Bless you Dad & thank you ever so much for your sacrifice & service!!!
Drills were different back then. My dad watched a DI go off on a fellow recruit in â67. He pulled a marble out of his front pocket and said âyouâre going to push this marble around the entire perimeter of CampâŠ.on your hands and kneesâŠ..with your nose.â
And now they send the Privates home for 18 days during the Xmas-New Years break...nothing like being forced to burn thru vacation days that have yet to be earned!! Glad I deployed 3 months after arriving at Wainwright so I didn't have time to dwell on it!!
I was there for Christmas. I remember a recruits mother sent us all a big box of cookies and candy for my whole platoon. My Drill instructors were cool letting us have some and they ate the rest. Next morning we all got smoked in the sad pit. Hahaha.
