That tip with the metronome was so good. I had been trying for like 40 minutes and I watched this video and saw the metronome tip and got it first try

I was practicing on the wrong stairs for the longest time (lol) so when I got to the 50 star door it worked like a charm within 10 tries. Felt great doing it for the first time ! =]

After playing this game for my entire life, I’ve finally done a BLJ thanks to this video!
Once I corrected my BPM, I flew up the stairs!!
If I forget what speed 450 bpm is, 4 semiquavers for every long jump with every beat starting upon landing seems to work alright.
Also, for those using the USAMUNE practice ROM, starting on the endless staircase should be easier. You can stage skip through to the area and then adjust the number of stars back down in the menu.
So long as you can still backward long jump, you don't have to stop to go back down the stairs unlike the 50 star door. It's *almost* as if the endless staircase is designed for BLJ practice! Disabling music with a GameShark code, along with adding a speed display might also be nice...

Fantastic advise, I have seen so many how to tutorials on this and I just never got it. Then when you showed the presses per second, I realized I've been pressing way too fast!

Used to do it, can't anymore, maybe because it's a bad emulator config, or just because it's not the real hardware, definitly easier on the real thing

on to 70 bljs killing more runs than my movement its depressing
interestingly, i have very little success with 450bpm and find that for me, the most consistent BLJs happen around 300-350. (i haven't counted exactly). i always find that the frequency of successful BLJs increases as i *lower* the tapping pace.

When I try blj I’m doing it on the pc port at the endless stair case I blj then Mario instead of long jumping he jumps why is that the case what input am I doing wrong

Why is the 50 star door so much harder? It takes so long to get passed the 50 star door but i can effortlessly get the 70 star door withi a couple tries

Great tutorial compared to the others I've seen, but I still haven't managed it even once. it's super difficult, at least on an emulator :P
I've heard it's only possible due to lag, and my computer aint laggin.
EDIT: Oh I actually got it now. I think I just hadn't been moving backwards before.
It's not obvious since you move backwards automatically as you spam Z :)
Also I had to use an emulator because I don't have an n64

I've gotten it a few times by deliberately slowing down. Actually just tapping. I'm not good at though, just got it for the first time like 10 minutes ago.
Try to hold your controller differently so you can mash with your pointer finger instead of your thumb, i rest the controller against my leg and mash with my pointer finger

Ffs why do no tutorials show you literally how to BLJ I just backflip Everytime I try. I understand the tempo and the angle but I just can't hit the first backwards long jump without just regular jumping, doing a straight forward long jump, or backflipping
Start by doing a regular forward long jump and once Mario starts the long jump then hold the joystick in the opposite direction and Mario will start going backwards
