  • It can be quite a punch in the gut to realize you may be in a cult. This addresses how you can point out the problems with cults and the practices of Jehovah's Witnesses rather than trying to scare them with the "C" word.

    Loving this series, thanks! Just a thought, you said one of their responses to not being a cult is that cult "members can be driven to do something terrible". To counter this, maybe point to the fairly recent comment by (I think) Tony Morris of the GB, that the members may be asked to do something that "doesn't seem logical" but they must obey! or words similar to that. This of course puts them straight in the same category as a cult.

      To be fair the “go bags” are mainly for natural disasters, not necessarily Armageddon related. Some have taken that to mean they are for persecution and to leave at any moment to go where the GB says. So far I’ve never seen evidence of it. All official direction is regarding natural disasters. Though I’m sure some JWs consider it to be mainly for persecution and to blindly follow directions. Thanks!

    Here’s what I would reply to a brainwashed JW: Well, if you were to ask a member of the Heavens Gate cult if they considered themselves to be in a cult, would they answer “Yes, I am in a cult.”? So no matter what cult member you ask, he/she will not consider himself/herself to be in a cult and strongly deny any such accusations.

    • @TheFallingTower
      @TheFallingTower  Před rokem +4

      Ironically, certain heavens gate members did know they were in a cult and didn’t care. I recall seeing a documentary about them where they said it openly. I’ve had a JW also jump to that same conclusion at the end by essentially stating “well if it’s a cult then so what. It’s still the best life and the one that leads to everlasting life”. 🤦‍♂️

    Pointing out traits noticed by those who study cults sounds reasonable enough. They may even politely go along with the reasoning. But in the back of their mind is something which has been instilled over and over. It is that those who study cults etc will be seen as part of Satan's world, deceived people. So I still think it will be hard going. Hope I'm wrong.

    • @TheFallingTower
      @TheFallingTower  Před rokem +11

      This is absolutely the case in my experience. It typically isn’t going to change their mind in any way. I’ve had people jump to “well if it’s a cult then I’m happy to be in one”. JWs generally care more about their emotional attachment to the religion along with the social benefits they think they get from it. Add to it the fact that it is generally uncomfortable to face the thought of changing such deeply held beliefs anyway. Not to mention the dire consequences of what happens if you do question it and come to the “wrong conclusion”. For most people I know, it took a multitude of problems with the religion and taking a step back to see the big picture of what it really is in order to get them to the point of waking up.

    • @TheFallingTower
      @TheFallingTower  Před rokem +4

      So if they follow god, does that mean that there is no mediator between them and god? Their answer will be that they don’t have a leader and that the GB are just fellow workers with them. It is a dishonest answer similar to them saying that they don’t have leaders. They do have leaders, hence the reason why they talk about obeying those “taking the lead”. They have even printed hierarchical charts in the magazine showing the GB as leaders. It is actually printed the that anointed ones, AKA the faithful slave, are the mediators for those of the other sheep. Jesus is only the mediator for them. What happens then the faithful slave changes a doctrine? You just follow it or else lose everything. Obeying the doctrines of men should not result in excommunication, particularly imperfect men who change their doctrine constantly under the guise of being lead by Holy Spirit. It’s all word games with JWs. I’ll do a much more in depth video soon showing examples of each point on how they fit the definition of a cult. These are just basic quick fire videos to help give something to say at the moment. Edit to add: and this highlights why I advise against using the word cult and instead focusing on the aspects of cults getting the to agree that each individual marker is dangerous. The cult word is just too traumatic for them and causes a knee jerk defense they have been trained to put up.

    • @PerfumeCognac

      @@TheFallingTower you are so right, the word cult immediately puts them on the defense. It’s hard to be diplomatic when it’s so obvious that it is one. If I were a witness, I’d be questioning why you use these specific criteria to decide what’s a cult. Witnesses have different methods to decide what a cult is. What makes your definition objectively better than theirs? They will automatically trust their own subjective definition more than your subjective definition.

    • @TheFallingTower
      @TheFallingTower  Před rokem +5

      Hence the reason I don’t use the word cult and instead talk about dangerous practices and tactics that another religion might use. Would they agree that the Mormons should not look at any outsider information about their beliefs? Do they agree that a preacher is correct in telling his parishioners to not talk to JWs at the door? Do they think it is right for someone’s family to shun them for becoming a JW? Not likely as the publications highlight that those tactics are bad ideas. They just apply it to others and not themselves.

    The word "Cult" seems to be synonymous/interchangeable with the word "sect". *In the bible the Apostle Paul was accused of belonging to a Cult/Sect - That was Christianity!* The Jewish religious leaders did not accept Gods New arrangement through Jesus. Who though would now say that Christianity in general is a Cult/sect from Judaism?
    Acts 24:2-5,12-14 New International Version
    2When Paul was called in, Tertullus presented his case before Felix: “We have enjoyed a long period of peace under you, and your foresight has brought about reforms in this nation. 3Everywhere and in every way, most excellent Felix, we acknowledge this with profound gratitude. 4But in order not to weary you further, I would request that you be kind enough to hear us briefly.
    5“We have found this man to be a troublemaker, *stirring up riots among the Jews all over the world. He is a ringleader of the Nazarene sect*
    12My accusers did not find me arguing with anyone at the temple, or stirring up a crowd in the synagogues or anywhere else in the city. 13And they cannot prove to you the charges they are now making against me.
    14However, I admit that I worship the God of our ancestors as a follower of the Way, *which they call a sect.* I believe everything that is in accordance with the Law and that is written in the Prophets,
    Acts 24:5,14 New Living Translation
    5We have found this man to be a troublemaker who is constantly stirring up riots among the Jews all over the world. *He is a ringleader of the cult known as the Nazarenes.*
    *14“But I admit that I follow the Way, which they call a cult.* I worship the God of our ancestors, and I firmly believe the Jewish law and everything written in the prophets
    The Apostle Paul was just following the way that God wanted. He proved that scripturally Jesus was the end of the Mosaic law and therefore Judaism. Judaism relied on a religious system centred around the temple and animal sacrifices. The temple represented where God was (Heaven) and the sacrifices represented a payment that covered over all sin/error (Jesus). Jesus died and went in before God himself and made the payment (giving up a perfect human life). The scales of justice were now balanced. A perfect man (Adam) had brought sin and death upon all his children, another perfect man (Jesus) voluntarily gave up his life to save all of those children.
    1 Corinthians 15:21,22 New International Version
    *21For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.* 22For as *in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.*
    John 10:17,18 New Living Translation
    *17“The Father loves me because I sacrifice my life so I may take it back again. 18No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily.* For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded.”
    Hebrews 9:New Living Translation
    11So Christ has now become the High Priest over all the good things that have come.e *He has entered that greater, more perfect Tabernacle in heaven,* which was not made by human hands and is not part of this created world. *12With his own blood-not the blood of goats and calves-he entered the Most Holy Place once for all time and secured our redemption forever.*
    *13Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer could cleanse people’s bodies from ceremonial impurity.* 14Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deedsf so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, *Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.*
    Despite the fact that Jesus (Christianity) was everything needed to remove sin, the Jews in general rejected him in favour of TRADITION. Even Paul initially didn't realise Christianity was God's way
    Mark 7:8 New International Version
    *You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”*
    Galatians 1:14 English Standard Version
    *And I was advancing in Judaism* beyond many of my own age among my people, *so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers.*
    The point of that history lesson is even the right way can be called a cult/sect if it is not understood. It may be a breakaway from traditional religions/ways but that doesn't make it a sect/cult (normally closed/exclusive and dangerous)
    Jehovah's Witnesses pulled away from mainstream/traditional Churches of Christendom in favour of holding closer to what the bible teaches.
    When Jehovah's Witnesses spoke out against the established/traditional Churches showing scripturally a lot of what was taught such as hellfire/eternal torment, the immortal soul, praying to Saints and the refusal to use God's own name, the Churches highly resented it.
    So just like Jesus (who was killed), The Apostle Paul and many others, they were labelled a "Cult/sect" because that legitimised the treatment that followed.
    John 16:2
    Amplified Bible
    They will put you out of the synagogues and make you outcasts. *And a time is coming when whoever kills you will think that he is offering service to God.*
    Jehovah's Witnesses sincerely believe the bible. They do not follow Christian traditions such as birthdays, Easter, Halloween, Christmas because the early Christians never did such things as recorded in the bible. They do not give religious titles to men like "Father" or Pope (meaning father)
    Matthew 23:9 New Living Translation
    And *don’t address anyone here on earth as ‘Father,’ for only God in heaven is your Father.*
    Such things said publicly would humiliate and undermine the Churches as not representing God appropriately. But that was not the aim of the Witnesses message, it was just to highlight truth so ones could draw closer to God.
    Jehovah's Witnesses are the farthest away from being a cult. Most cults are reclusive but Jehovah's Witnesses preach publicly and their meetings are open for any and all to attend.
    Most cults centre around a human person. The name "Jehovah's Witnesses" demonstrates the opposite. They aim to highlight truth instead of perpetuate lies
    Proverbs 14:25 New International Version
    *A truthful witness saves lives,* but a false witness is deceitful.
    Psalms 83:18 King James Bible
    That men may know that thou, *whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.*
    Isaiah 43:10 Aramaic Bible in Plain English
    *You are my witnesses, says LORD JEHOVAH,* and my Servants whom I have chosen, and you shall know, and you shall believe in me, and you shall understand that I am he, and before me there has not been a God created, and none shall be after me
    Romans 10:12-14 Aramaic Bible in Plain English
    12And he makes no distinction in this, not for the Jews, neither for the Aramaeans, for he is The One LORD JEHOVAH to all of them, who is rich with everyone who calls to him. *13“For everyone who will call the name of THE LORD JEHOVAH shall be saved.”*
    14Therefore, *how would they call to This One unless they believed in him, or how would they believe him unless they heard him, or how would they hear without a preacher?*
