Hey guys - just wanted to let you know that yes, I'm aware the dirt was a joke. Tyler himself messaged me when he saw the video and explained that he made a joke listing on ebay and sent the bidder an albo cutting.
Kaylee Ellen I thought it was a case of trying to trick someone not reading the listing properly. Dad made this mistake once and ended up with the MANUAL of the thing he wanted. This person was literally selling the printed manuals that are available free on the parts website. Of course they refused to refund us. Lesson learned for dad.
I laughed out loud at the dirt listing. Lets be honest, people will literally buy anything when there is a fad going on. You shouldn't have to tell people not to purchase things like that but it is necessary sometimes unfortunately.
Wow Tyler is so sweet for doing that!

@meem ك lol 😂
We need a, “send nodes,” shirt! 😂

Bros with Hoes Plant Co in the US made some stickers and merch with that! I highly recommend that shop in general for plants and whatnot
I would totally wear it!!!🤣
🤣🤣🤣
This must happen...I'm getting one custom made.
I stupidly purchased “variegated monstera” seeds on eBay a year or two ago. It was a deal offering 50 seeds for about 3$. Thinking that I’d have more successful growth with more seeds, I thought it was fitting to plant them ALL. Months later I had something growing, wasn’t a monstera though. It looked more like grass so I decided to research different seeds to see what the hell I was growing and it turns out they were yucca seeds- and I planted all 50 🤦🏽♀️So in about 20 years I guess I’ll just have 50 full grown yucca trees in my home 😂 thanks a lot eBay
Dayna Perez at least you were only scammed out of a few bucks, not hundreds.
It's kind of a great prank, really. The cheap seeds, not the defunct cuttings.
kelly McGregor I know thankfully! 🙏🏽 there are so many scams out there.
Skittish Elf exactly I got a plant nonetheless 🤷🏽♀️
LOL.
Good luck with the trees!
About 4 years ago, I ordered 5 REGULAR monstera seeds through Etsy from a reputable seller in the Netherlands. I managed to grow two of them into amazing, non variegated plants that are still thriving in my inlaws' greenhouse
I sell variegated water if anyone wants one. It variegates anything dude. It’s like magic. Totally not scamming you!
😲 Yes! I will send you 1 BILLION US DOLLARS!!! Please wait for the money truck to show up to your address asap 😜
I will take 2 please every day!
There are actual chemicals that do cause variegation!
@@Doriamo they can be damaging to the plant though!
@@ivanjz5749 of course but dishonest sellers do not care!
& then there’s me, perfectly happy and content with my slightly variegated pothos leaf 😂
Same here..😊 I don't understand this craze about variegated monstera.. yes, it's pretty but I would never pay so much money on a plant
Same! Lol
Same here! Monstera's overrated. I won't spend a fortune for expensive plant. I'm contented with my pothos & regular philos. 😂
I have a $5 variegated alocasia macrorhizza odora that I am perfectly content with 😆
Hahaha same
I've spotted a full albo monstera plant right next to my biology class. Being one of the students that is likely to ask teachers for their plant cuttings I asked my teacher for a cutting. He suggested to take the whole plant !! Planning on taking it this year when the weather warms up :)
Nice. Make sure to make cuttings and pay it forward!
Nice! I hope you take a cutting and grow it and put it back next to the class. It would be cool for other biology students to see it.
Send me a cutting pls
How cool is that!! I hope you have it at home by now. 🥰🙂
Full Albo will eventually die!
OMG this video is so great! I actually bought the first cutting u mentioned on ebay that looked rotted. I bid before really thinking and had the worst feeling in my stomach after. I even messaged the seller regarding the node. He assured me that there was a viable node and then - thank God - messaged me a couple of days later telling me he was refunding me bc the plant had completely rotted! Lol! You called it!!
Thankfully it rotted before they shipped it! Otherwise you might have had to deal with a huge hassle
@@imoneixusa9742 So true!! I was totally thankful! 🙏
11:33 the moment Kaylee considers a US tour where she just breaks into people’s houses to smack the credit cards out of their hands.
-Hello, glad you could make it
-Kaylee?? This is MY living room, what the hell?
-Give me your card, you child, stop buying sticks
And then gives a TED talk on what is wrong

It’s so depressing that ppl will ruin such a calming and wholesome hobby like HOUSE PLANT GARDENING 😞😞😞
What I've discovered over the years is that even the most wholesome of activities have their dark underbellies.
This is horrible but also the fact that there is even drama in the plant world is pretty funny
Allison Acosta I know!! I thought the same... 😅
I was hoping that there would be at least one community that was just wholesome and no nastiness 😭😂😂

is it just me that prefers the normal monstera? the albo is cool but i feel like the normal green is just so classic and it makes the leaf fenestrations POP. I'm happy with my variegated pothos lol
Thank you Kaylee for all the information! I got a variegated monstera stem cutting a year ago with roots, one leaf and a node for about 40€. Nothing has really been happening except for the roots growing, until I accidentally sun burned the leaf this summer... I kept the stem and now it FINALLY has started to grow a new leaf! 🙏
I’m a new plant mum, and omg you don’t imagine how helpful these videos you made are.
The plants you listed already have been in my eye sight.
Thank you for the information!
You don’t know how much it is appreciated :)
The dirt thing was literally a joke made by the same Tyler person you referenced earlier in the video. He posted the eBay posting on Facebook and said it was a joke. He also said someone bought it and he sent them a real cutting. Not to say that there aren’t some people out there that would try this... I’m glad you made this video cause I see wet sticks being sold all the time... I also see people asking if their monstera is a “half moon” as though it’s a type of monstera. I bought a single leaf cutting for $150 and it already doesn’t feel worth it.
Morgan Stevens def a joke. He sent them the real thing.
Kayla Lorentz that’s what I thought. I went back and found the post cause I’m like surely it’s the same person. No one else would attempt to do that lol
Glad to know at least that wasn’t real
Came here to post this
Came here to say the same exact thing. The person who bought it got a sweet cutting from his variegated monstera.
I’m so glad I got my cutting from a wonderful person, it was a one leaf cutting from a very juvenile plant (no fenestrations yet) and established roots. I’m hoping this video helps others find their unicorn while avoid getting scammed!
I live in Ukraine and I bought a rooted cutting for 3 bucks, poor country's percs I guess :D
Shaza Musa thanks now i know where i‘ll go on vacation this year 😄
Please send me some! Lol

The nine people that have disliked this video must be the scammers you showed, lol ...Fantastic video by the way! 👏👏👏💚💚💚
What a helpful video! It breaks my heart to see people being scammed, all because of love for a plant. Please continue your work; it’s a terrific public service.
@ 15:00 -- *Monstera deliciosa seeds:* Being a tropical native, M.d. has no need to make seeds that will survive a winter. Mama plant expects her seeds to fall on warm, fertile ground, not to go thru the mail for a week or more. *They will expire within a few days after maturing in the delicious fruit.*
DO NOT BUY TROPICAL SEEDS THRU THE MAIL.
Thanks for the information it's been a long time that i wonder if those seeds that are sold all over internet can really grow 😅
@@yaelsoso8131 ...I was speaking generally here. There may be exceptions. I know that Philodendron bipinnatifidum (now Thaumatophyllum bi... ) grows outdoors in areas with short, mild winters. It's seeds may be hardier.

Hi Kaylee, just finished editing my latest video and was "on the hunt" for something to watch, while the file is processing.... So happy you just uploaded a new video. I also want to thank you for your insistence on using a moister meter! I listend, got on amazon, bought one and never looked back! greetings from Berlin!
In Germany we call nods on Monsteras "sleeping eyes" I think it fit's very well :)
Great video! Id like to say that it is not just monstera people are doing this stuff. Even rare cacti people do this! People are selling stolen, poached and just bad plants online and charging a HUGE amount because if the name or title of the plant. For example this guy was selling ariocarpus on eBay in huge poached amount but the sad thing was you can tell they were just ripped from the ground (15-20 year old plants) beacausr they have a mane tap root and roots that grow off that tap root and they were just stripped and it was a half broken tap root just so wrong and sad.
Could have been “Sellers, send nudes! I mean nodes.”
Finally talked myself out of ordering the Antherium Clarinervum but YOU KEEP TEMPTING ME. You have convinced me, it is simply too pretty.
And they are super easy to take care of. Just give it a lot of light and only water when completely dry. Mine is popping out it´s 7th leaf :D

@@Dixiwonderlandyoutube are they really easy? I want one but I don't have any anthuriums so I'm afraid.
As much as I want an albo, I can't deal with the price tag or the craziness with the hunting for one. I have a local nursery that does sell them but there is a waiting list for over 6 months and , besides that, I'm so scared to spend all that money to just have it revert back to a green one that I can pick up at a grocery store for $20. I will covet one from a distance and if the hype ever drops for these, then maybe I'll get one. Until then, I'm going to enjoy my lovely GREEN monstera.
the dirt listing is made to poke fun at the crazy prices people charge for these plants :)
I feel very lucky to have managed to buy an albo borsigiana cutting from Kaylee when she first opened her shop. The one beautiful leaf is now three! Very grateful that there are some genuine sellers out there, who put so much care into their plants. Thank you, thank you, thank you! x
Thank you so much for this!!! My husband just asked last night why I didn’t just get seeds instead of paying so much for a cutting. It was hard for me to find the right words to explain to him why I wouldn’t do this. Now I can just show him this video ☺️
This series is fantastic. The best thing about this “dirt” is all of the research you do and facts and examples you provide. Thank you so much for keeping us plant crazed folks educated and looking out for us 😘
Honestly you should look at the aussie ebay listings for monsteras and even other types of "rare plants" I've seen stems go for like 500 aud which is like 340USD. It's actually ridiculous lol
I appreciate all of the information. I'm on the hunt for a variegated Monstera and I'm new-ish to the plant world, this was very informative!
Me too. I recently saw it and fell in love.
I went to the local plant nursery, and they had large plants, but I didn’t have enough room for it at the time. I asked if I could buy a cutting from them, but they said they wouldn’t be able to sell the larger plant if they were to take a cutting.
The following week I went to a Chinese restaurant and they had a beautiful big variegated monstera, I again asked if I could buy a cutting, but the owner ended up giving it to me for free, since I had already paid for my food.
I really cherish that plant, I hold it near my heart ❤️
I ordered variegated monstera seeds several times. It became entertaining. The first seeds I got were Chia seeds. The next ones looked like mustard seeds. I knew they were not Monstera because I actually did order Monstera Deliciosa seeds from someone in South Carolina, which actually DID grow into Monstera plants. None of the seeds I got as variegated monstera seeds were monstera seeds at all.
The Monstera “thai constellation” is also grown from tissue culture - that is how it has been mass produced and has flooded the market.
Not in the UK it hasn't and i need one
@@hollywatson6693 they usually mass produce them in tissue culture labs in southeast asia -- there are a lot available in the US, so I am sure they will arrive on the market in the UK eventually if they haven't already.
@@hollywatson6693 I just don't get the fuss about the Thai Constellation. There is no comparison between it and the Monstera Albo Variegata. I know which one I'd rather have and it's not the Thai Constellation but, hey, each to their own.
@@celested8073 I'd prefer the Thai Constellation out of the two options. Its leaves won't ever "revert" to standard green, there's no risk of it producing all-white leaves that need to be cut away, and the speckling is super cute.
I have multiples of both the Thai and Albo (I’m a seller and importer) and the tissue culture Thai is far less fussy making it ideal for first time growers. It can be grown like any other house plant and grows very fast since they typically have more chlorophyll. I’ve also got quite a few Thais that have the prettiest half white leaves - solid white on one side and variegated on the other. I do prefer my huge albo to any other plant tho!
I'm now staring at my average all green baby monstera and silently screaming "mutate, mutate"
Excellent video! Thank you for this Kaylee Ellen! It is such an issue here in the US. I have seen these listings more and more frequently. It was so good to hear you discuss this issue as a creator and shop owner as well as offer education to your viewers. I have seen some creators comment that the buyers should know better and it is their money but honestly a lot of people are new to plant collecting and they don't know. I appreciate you giving Tyler a shout out as well. He was the first person to really bring this everyone's attention on social media.
Thank you for this video. I was one of the people that bought a pink Congo before I realised it was a scam. I thoroughly learnt lot today. Thank you again.

I liked how you touched on Amazon/e-bay/ Etsy selling fake seeds. I think this issue deserves an episode of it's own because so many poorly photoshopped "rare" plant seeds are sold on these marketplaces. These platforms need to take action against these sellers.

Kaylee i almost got scammed. Thanks something from heaven told me it would never work and i gave up buying SEEDS! Ur video is really informative for those who eager to buy those stuffs. Congratulations on your effort to expose this problem. Greetings from Brazil!
Kaylee, I really like the content you produce and your shop. I am watching this video and I am disappointed for not receiving any answers to my inquiries sent on the 14th of August after receiving 3 plants bought from your shop. One of 3 plants was dead on arrival and I got no answer regarding that. The FAQ on your shop states "If your plant has been damaged in transit, please contact us immediately and depending on availible stock, we can arrange a replacement/refund.". I think I deserved at least some kind of answer. After sending 5 emails the only thing I can do is to post this publically.
I've had that happen with another company before. Don't give up! Get your money back. Also found out half of my 8 emails went to a misspelled email.... But hey haha I got a refund in the end. Hopefully you get some answers
Thanks@@hj6507! I appreciate your reply. Kaylee, please check your emails, you can search them by my name. Rejection of my request would also be a resolution of the issue. Not the one I am in favor of, but I would like this resolved instead of ignored. I appreciate you are really busy. We all are.

Here here, so many to waste money on
In a book shelf, you would probably better with a low wattage thin led panel, i use IKEA 16w LEDs. Works a treat for Heliamphora, nepenthes, utricularia to houseplants. How much vertical space do you have on each shelf?
Me too
I love your dish the dirt videos! If you ever get into succulents/cacti my word there are so many dishes to be made. Also it would be interesting to hear your opinion on growers who sell plants which they gather from the wild. I've seen a few sellers proudly state they sell authentic plants taken from their natural habitat. I personally don't agree with it, we have green houses and technology to grow our own plants. leave wild plants alone, there's a reason so many are protected or endangered now.
You are all sorts of awesome, Kaylee. Thank you for existing.
Thank you so much Kaylee Ellen. Very much appreciate this information as this plant is definitely on my wish list. Your information is so spot-on and timely. Love you!

That's what people do when they first start and become desperate. I was once in that desperate, happy and addicted to buy everything but luckily I did my research before spending $$$$on something that won't even work. People will learn and thanks for sharing this information with others.
Very true. It's all the hype that goes around it's like if something is new on Instagram or something it's gotta be bought no matter what. NOooooo. Stop!!!!! 😅
Dammit Kaylee, i JUST bought variegated dirt, where were you?
This is really helpful because a lot of people will buy any part of Monstera Albo not knowing if it will grow or not! Thanks Kaylee! 👍
I think people are overly excited and enthused toget a monstera albo b, because it is beautiful. And many are blinded and often fall victims to lies. But few have patience to wait and nurture and be surprised which for me is more fulfilling and uplifting .just my thoughts. Thank you for this enlightening video.
I ordered Monstera Seeds on ebay from a guy who had a very good rating. It wasn't Variegated seeds because I knew that that doesn't exist. I just thought it would be nice to see a Monstera Baby grow. The seeds didn't look right to me but I thought that maybe it was a different type of Monstera. The seller had a good rating so I didn't think too much of it.
Actually I was a bit excited to see what kind of Monstera or maybe Philodendron I'll have. I planted them and they germinated very fast. And looked like grass. But the seeds didn't look like grass seeds. I was confused and after some LONG research I found out that I now had Sugar Cane plants. They looked nice... And you can eat them... I'll order Sugar Cane seeds again some day.
This made my day! Haha :D
Omg I'm so happy you did this ❤️
Why would anyone thumbs down this video? I think it’s definitely both parties responsibility to buy/sell good plants, but definitely more so on the part of the seller. I personally won’t buy from anyone who says they are not responsible for damage and will not refund. And as always, read the seller reviews! 💯
I have always enjoyed your joy, excitement and passion for plants. When you makes videos like this it just increases my respect for your integrity, kindness and intelligence even more. Thank you.
I dont really understand why people are jumping on the hype to begin with. Yes, variegated monsteras are beautiful, hell, I'd take one in a heartbeat. However, I wouldn't ever dish out that much money on a cutting. You see, the thing with hyped plants everyone wants is that also everyone is going to grow them, wanting to cash in on the trend. The market will be flooded with them in no time (well, as long as it takes commercial growers to get them ready), after all, we're not talking about a species that is especially difficult to grow or take care of. As "exotic" they may seem now, they are a perfectly easy plant, even for beginners, which makes them even more valuable for plantshops. It's fair bet that we'll see tons of those plants everywhere pretty soon and with a much, much smaller price tag. Why not just wait a bit? And thank the people who created and financed the hype, without it, we wouldn't see them coming into shops after all.
My plan exactly. Wait for the availability to go up as the hype goes down, then nab one on the cheap.
Eartha Forester that’s exactly my plan as well.. also I know I’ll own and I’ll love the plant for many years so why not to wait..
FACTS 👊💯👏
That's an extremely smart thing to do unfortunately many ppl are absolutely obsessed with the newest Instagram plant "trend" 😅
I don’t understand this either. It seems that people have more money than sense?

Oh wow, I honestly didn't realize that these variegated monsteras were in so high demand. I've seen healthy variegated cutting in dirt or plants being sold in physical specialty plant stores somewhere in Toronto at a price of 50 maybe stretching 90 Canadian dollars.
I love how passionate you are about this topic 😊
Thank you for giving us the “dirt” 😆🙏🏻🙌🏻
I guess my advice would be... Use a credit card when buying from sellers that are not properly vetted. If you can't get a refund or the seller has gone dark on you, you can at least file a chargeback. I believe PayPal also offers a similar process.
Be careful out there!
Anytime I've EVER tried to get anything refunded from PayPal they say "sorry you have to go through the seller."
Hahaha! I am in that facebook group where that picture of the Monstera "seeds" was purchased. HERE FOR THIS.
The Organized Soprano what Facebook group was it ? I’m trying to find more Facebook plant groups
holy shit your eyeshadow in this video is EVERYTHING. also i love you!
this is hilarious and sad to watch as someone who lives in Australia where barely rooted single node stem cuttings with no leaves regularly go for over $350, the demand is even higher here as the supply is very limited due to our strict biosecurity laws
I cried inside the last time I tried to find a proper varigrated cutting there, even if you have the money there's no proper choice
I saw someone on etsy selling an all white cutting for $500.
I had the same problem with my cutting. After I've paid £165 the seller sent me the cutting with a rotten stem at the base, one from the 2 aerial roots was rotten as well. Obviously the pictures were not showing any rotten parts. When I've contacted the seller he told me it was because of shipping(one day)🙄 Fortunately i managed to save it and she is thriving now. I can say that i was lucky. But i see so many people scam...is unreal. Thank you for this video💚😊
Thank you so much for this video and the effort you put into it. 💚💚💚 Love love love your channel and every video you do! 👍
When the "wet sticks" title card I had to double take
I love this lady just calling out all the scammers taking advantage of everyone else who is on a houseplant frenzy. Stop buying plants online just get a young monstera from the nursery! You're spending so much money, choose a good healthy plant!?
I bought two albo wet sticks. One more variegated than the other… both have taken and have leaves growing. The more variegated one is a lot slower. I actually prefer the less variegated one. It’s a bit of fun. I also have a large form green monstera that I grew from a dried up dehydrated wet stick. In 12 months it grew into a huge plant with massive fenestrated leaves and secondary fenestration. It’s bringing so much joy.
I do think part of the responsibility lies with the buyer. If you are going to spend that much money on a plant you need to make sure you know enough about the plant to care for it. That includes how it grows, which will tell you something about how to take proper cuttings. Doing your research is important. Plus, the only reason why these sellers are doing this is because it works. If people did their research, these sellers wouldn't be making money and they'd stop doing it and move into the next scam.
So glad I want a Thai constellation, I just can’t pay that much for something that might revert.
I think Thai is the only one that doesn't revert bc it's basically a GMO so it's on its genes and not a random mutation
I might be wrong but it's worth doing some research :0
It’s the Albo that reverts :) you’re fine with a Thai
It honestly depends on your stem. If you have a well variegated stem then your leaves probably won't revert. Also depends on your environment, especially sunlight. I have an albo, aurea and Thai so I'm not just speaking from no experience. Also my albo is a kens philodendron one so another tip is check your source. Their line has been putting out established variegation for at least 22 years I think.
Megan Eisemann it is the reason I got a thai constellation, and way less expensive 👌
That was Tyler thrasher that was selling the “soil” lol he actually sent a plant to the person that bought it lmao!
Wow!!! Thank you so much for the information! I’ve no idea about this! Will def need to share to my friends and family. Keep up the good work. 👍👍
I got ready with food and drinks for this ❤ best part of a really hard Friday

Holy cow I won't even spend $10-20 for a plant especially now with everyone housebound getting new plant hobbies & green thumbs all of the sudden the prices are flipping ridiculous and wayyyy overpriced!
Wait a bit and I assure you these prices will decrease.
I'll stick with my regular seller who doesn't charge a full months paycheck for a plant 💚
Great video though 👍😊
Not necessarily true. I have grown nepenthes for a decade. They have doubled and tripled in price even for common plants.
Love love love these episodes. The first episode my fave so far
I subscribed to Kaylee Ellen because I have never come across a programme which is so so in-depth about how to select a plant. Brilliant vid.
