5500ft Snowboarding Descent in Alpe d'Huez - Chasing Andy in 4k

- Headcam footage of me snowboarding down one of the longest runs here in Alpe d'Huez. 5500 feet of descent. This is one of my favourite routes, it begins at the 'Dome des Rousses' and then starts on the red piste 'le Belvedère' before taking a right onto the red run 'Bartavelles'. This is one of my favourite runs in Alpe d'Huez, it has a great consistent pitch as well as some nice bends which gives it the feel of a boardercross track. Afterwards it joins onto 'les Rousses' and then blue run 'Chalets'. From here it is then onto the black piste 'La Fare'. This was a bit icy as it hasn't been getting that much snow lower down this season. I give Andy a 3 minute head start, but can I catch him?
Let me know if you came to this video by searching for relaxing ASMR sounds. ASMR wasn't something I knew anything about, but I've had alot of people come across this video because of it!

That was scary with the kid crossing
Yeah, the dad just pushed him straight across the piste! Still, I need to be extra careful when going that fast!

@@malcolmmoore I have not seen the road sign "Deer-Kids crossing".
How icy was it? It didn't look like it needed to be an issue at all; but, I've also been spoiled with fair amounts of snow.
You shouldn't be going that fast if you cant control yourself enough to miss the kid, but not the smartest of moves from the parent.
Does anybody else feel uncomfortable whatching someone drive regular when u drive goofy or is it just me

Damn this run is like my entire local mountain in one trail.

especially given that it was only about a 9 minute run. Andy would have been almost a 3rd of the way down before Malcolm set off.
I love watching these speed runs. I messed up my leg a few years ago and can't do it anymore, but a buddy and I used to race down the blacks in our area (not super difficult blacks to be fair) and it was a blast. The super late night runs were the best - maybe one or two other people on the run, no distractions, just pure riding. One night we were feeling confident, having booked it down the run a dozen times cleanly that day and we decided to take it as fast as we could. I hardly slowed down the entire run until the last straightaway. It was to the point where a fall was breaking multiple bones if not my head. It was reckless and exhilarating.
During one attempt earlier in the day, on a straight decline right under the lift, I hit a rough bump in an icy patch in the middle of a turn. I ended up nearly on my ass sliding down the rest of the way, but had caught myself with one hand while the board was on edge. I was purely horizontal and it took about 15-20 seconds of that before I recovered, hardly even losing any speed. Everyone on the lift cheered, and that only prompted me to take the next time even faster.
There's something incredible about flying down a mountain at full speed, when all you can hear is the wind, feeling like there's no friction on your board, every breath giving you cold air that hardly even seems to cool you down, and seeing gorgeous scenery passing you in a flash. Boarding is one of the best feelings in the world.
I'll be snowboarding in 2 weeks for the first time in my life, and I'm so excited. Been watching a ton of clips on youtube, lessons too, because I'm planning on learning to ride on my own, without an instructor (it's costly and a hassle I feel). Your comment hyped me up so hard, thanks for that lol.
Do you reckon it's fine to learn by myself?
@@xXTiggaBoBXx Should be okay. Take it slow, and learn the basics well. Get out of your comfort zone and you'll improve much faster, but always remember to be safe.
I love them to! I set a new personal record at La Sarenne past december of 130km/h on my new Bataleon Thunder. When I looked at my tracking app I first couldn't believe it. My previous record was 98km/h wich a achieved in Zermatt.
@@xXTiggaBoBXx It's fine to learn by yourself, though I'd suggest searching up some instruction videos if you can find them. The most important thing is that you take it slow and be safe. Boarding isn't easy, but it is easy to get yourself hurt. Expect that you're going to spend 90% of your first day rolling down the mountain rather than riding it.
Good luck!
We all know the truth that if the mountain was clear he would be going like 100 mph and catch up with Andy in a split second
Cheers bro 👍
Well said! Have another go as the lifts open 🏁
It never ceases to amaze me how even the most experienced riders STILL STOP in the MIDDLE of the run! It give me anxiety 😑
Jacob Hunter If they stop where they are visible I don't have a problem with that. Some talented morons will stop in the middle and right behind a hump or a break. Then you see them at the last second. I have choice words for them.
yup. and they literally will argue and say '' i can do it if i want to. the downhill skier has the right away!''
That looks so fun
I ride in Minnesota and I see this all the time. I usually resort to ollie-ing over their board or skis, and I laugh at how mad they get.
I fell on the top of a ramp once, but I was young so I was just laughed with. Not at, because the people were understanding. Kids get away with anything lol
There’s something very satisfying in watching you overtake skiers
Haha indeed!
Why do some skiers ski how the old lady drives at the end of Ferris Bueller's Day Off?!
WantonMyth loooool
@Fedor Smolin I ski too!
@Fedor Smolin me too, me too!
I felt every last one of those “aaaahhh” moments
Just amazing! A few close calls!! Heaven knows how you had any grip at 40mph on the ice and didn't wipe out. My heart skipped a beat at the cliff edge, hoping you'd make the turn. Great video, love all the metrics too.
Thanks seth!
The fastest I've been on a board (and probably ever will be) was 53mph which is right around the max on this vid. Let me tell you, that experience is something else. The difference between 40mph and 50+mph is crazy. You're massively focused on everything yet the board melts away below you, the wind, the speed, it all becomes hyperreal. Getting blasted with endorphins while being intimately aware that a fall right now is REALLY going to suck. Hell yeah, cant wait for next season.
Buzzing for next season! 🤙
@Tyler Raedeke nice!
I’ve gone 108 kmh which is 67? But on skis though
hobblyhoy It’s quite alright with a raceboard
Well I can imagine that the speed is ludicrous on a snowboard, but on skis, I was able to reach about 73 mph (117km/h) which then also had the same effects as described above
As a beginner whose only been snowboarding once, watching this is frightening.

I feel you... The thing is, instructors tell beginners that they "can take the whole track, the people behind you is responsible for stopping", so they never learn to be aware...
@@mexicanfenix4855 That's so f-ing irresponsible.
Indeed a lot of responsibility goes to whoever's uphill, but it's ridiculous to expect everyone to behave reasonably.

@@ThisHandleFeatureIsStupid Mate, I feel what you say, but we have to consider this was a green-blue track, meant for beginners and kids, so really high speeds are discouraged. Still, I agree it's a bad teaching practice and shouldn't be the standard in France, but we make do.
