vv. 1-16a (Jesus sentenced to crucifixion)
Pilate ordered for Jesus to be flogged. The cat of nine tails whip, leather straps with bone, stone, and glass, tearing flesh, and muscles, and 40 hits or more were fatal, Jesus received 39 hits. Romans pushed their limits.
They mocked Him with a crown of thorns, bowing down, slapping, spitting, and saying, “Hail, King of the Jews.”
Pilate said at this point three times that he found nothing wrong in Jesus. The chief priests riled up the crowds to crucify Him. They lied to Pilate and said the Law ordered Him to be killed because He made Himself the Son of God.
Pilate became afraid of the crowd, Pilate questioned Jesus and thought he had the power to release Jesus or crucify Him, but Jesus humbled him and said it would not have been so if it did not come from the Father.
The ones who sent Jesus to Pilate are guilty of the greater sin, the Pharisees. The Jewish leaders were gaslighting Pilate by mentioning Caesar and making Pilate think he could get into trouble. They claimed to have Caesar as king, even though the Jews hated the Romans for oppressing them and hated the tax collectors as well.
    vv. 16b-27 (The crucifixion)
Jesus carried His cross, at the place of the Skull, Golgotha, in Aramaic.
Two others as well, Jesus in the middle.
The notice above said, Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. They wanted him to change it but he left it as it was. Possibly very irritated, and the sign might have been sarcastic.
But the sign was true, Jesus is from Nazareth and the King of the Jews. Written in Greek, Aramaic, and Latin.
The Romans did not divide the garment, which fulfilled Psalm 22:18.
Jesus, as the firstborn of Mary, made sure John would take care of His mother, John was the only one who stood close by.
vv. 28-37 (The death of Jesus)
Jesus was thirsty as a fulfilment of the Scriptures. The wine vinegar helped with the pain, and Jesus declared, It is finished. A reference to how a farmer declared the finished work of a field, Tetelestai.
The other two had their legs broken to accelerate their death, but Jesus was already dead, they pierced His side, and blood and water gushed out, we were washed clean. No bone was broken.
This testimony is true, John saw this with his own eyes. Fulfilment of Exodus 12:46, Numbers 9:12, Psalm 34:10, and Zechariah 12:10.
vv. 38-42 (The burial of Jesus)
Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus buried Jesus, in a new tomb that was never used before, and Nicodemus brought about 34 kilograms of myrrh and aloes, and wrapped Jesus in linen with the spices, they had to hurry because it was almost sunset.
And then it was Silent Saturday.
