  • We gave interior designers Noz Nozawa, Darren Jett, and Joy Moyler a photo of the same undecorated loft in New York - then asked each of them to create a design for it in their particular style, however they pleased. From the windows to the floors, the lighting fixtures to the furniture - three artists, one canvas, each bringing something different to the space. Watch and see which designer checks the most boxes on your luxury loft wishlist.

Perhaps in in Darren if this place is huge and I have an open kitchen/tv room/regular dining space somewhere else, and tbh (everybody's got their thing) but never in Joy's, mostly just not into harsh shapes/love more organic and also it feels like I'd always be bashing into a chair or something.

    Three absolutely different styles, for sure. Noz scored trillion points for me right off the bat though, when she introduced an island so that people don't have to walk forever to get to the fridge. This assignment didn't even have clients, but she showed that she is thinking of the user in relation to the space. It's not all about the looks and it is great to see that a designer understands that. Thank you for this video, it's awesome!

      Joys design with chairs with more of a curve design would have made the space more balanced. The space is very rectangular and her furniture is too. Like the dining chairs and living room chairs Noz used. The breakfast bar stools of neither work, they need to have padded seats and lower backs. Viola Davis chose perfect ones for a surprise redo of a kitchen for friend with Property Brothers. Rugs with holes are bad idea. That space needs a beautiful rug with color and/or artwork with color and accessories and pillows that pick up colors of the artwork and rug.

    the rugs with holes is a death trap - will likely get ripped either by a chair leg or human tripping on it. and that sofa - couldn't nap on that. the opulent one is all about the designer's aesthetic (which is fab!) so it leaves little room for the homeowner to express themselves other than through the vision of the designer. the final one is standard issue sound design that's practical, economical, livable - generic done well. i would have liked to have seen the opposite end of the space too and how they dealt with whatever challenges were there. love these videos!

    This was a master class in interior design for someone like me. I have a passion for it and I know what I love, but I currently have little practical experience beyond designing a few personal spaces. Among the fun, insightful videos that AD has brought us, this one struck me as particularly inspirational. AD has chosen three really talented designers with distinct views.
    All three designers had fantastic ideas. They expressed their approach and artistic view with such eloquence. It allowed me to see why they went with those choices. I nodded along as they elaborated on their choices and thought about how it made sense given their artistic POV. And so, whereas I may differ in certain areas, I respect their selections a lot.
    If I was fortunate to be presented with a choice between the three, I would go Noz Nozawa’s approach as it has a magical blend of calm and playfulness. I love the rounded shapes, natural textures, and purposeful asymmetry.

    An interesting insight to what goes on in a designer's head.
    Joy has produced a design that could be lived in, but it was rather "tame", "ordinary", "safe". I would not walk into that room and go "oh, they've had a designer in!"
    Noz's design made me think of a nursery school, due to the curves. It is "uncomfortable", "dangerous", "odd". It is not a place to kick off your shoes and curl up with a good book. It would not be long before someone injured themselves by catching their foot in the holes in the rugs. If I walked into this room I'd go "I wonder what the designer's idea was?"
    Darren's design for the kitchen, and the ceiling are simply gorgeous. The mirror would not be something that I would choose, seeing myself once a day is enough, but I love the effect. My favourite part is the dining area, though, at my age I'm not sure that I be able to get up without help... The only part that I don't like is the carpet, I'm not a fan of carpet. If I walked into this room, I'd go "wow! What an amazing designer!"
    If had to choose one for my home, it would, though, be Joy's. At least I could live there.

    I feel like the key difference in the designs is the approach, Joy's seems more like a day to day living space, like the rest of the place would be one or two bedrooms and bathrooms. For Noz and Darren, it's clearly more of an entertaining area which would be part of those overly extensive appartements where you have a lot of bedrooms, studies and whatnot, which allows the eccentricity since you may not use the room every single day.

      @fmanantsoa Před rokem +3

      @@REDnBLACKnRED Eccentric doesn't mean it's not tasteful, it just means that it's something you don't see often. And the liveable part, I feel like the shape of the couch, the holes in the rug, that bump on the table require extra attention and maintenance, which if it were something I had to deal with everyday would get annoying really quickly. It's just a feeling I get from the render, maybe in real life it is very easy to maintain, I can't know that for sure. Designing a living space for me is not just about making it look beautiful, it's more about how it's going to make the actual living easy, practical and comfortable. That's why it feels more like an entertaining space than a living area, but it still looks great. Then again, just sharing my thoughts, not trying to convince you of anything.

    • @REDnBLACKnRED
      @REDnBLACKnRED Před rokem

      @@fmanantsoa It's definitely not for everybody. In contrast to Joy's design, which is quite conservative, Noz's is definitely more avant-garde, but I think it is still conventional in the sense that it still has a relatively conventional layout, and a normal table, with normal chairs. A uniquely shaped sofa but still a usable sofa nonetheless. A usable island. It's just that the pieces chosen are quite unique. I do agree that the carpets with holes are the most impractical choice there, I thought about how the chairs would get caught in them when moving them, or sit unevenly if one of the legs is in the holes while the others aren't. That is definitely a bit eccentric. The tinted windows definitely push it further in that direction. But I'm sure you'd agree, one wouldn't put it close to being anywhere near as eccentric as Darren's. That one is almost outlandish and impractical in everyday contexts, the sofas, the low table, the carpet, the lights, the mirror (imagine cleaning that space!). I suppose it has a lot to do with personal design philosophy. I for one tend to look for unique, sculptural furniture pieces for my home since I like the idea of everything you spend time using to also be a piece of art in its own right, for your space to be a source of creative inspiration, rather than be purely functional. I just never thought of that as being eccentric, perhaps it is!

    Found myself liking Darren's the most because it fully takes it THERE, a fully conceived design with tons of interesting contrast and character. Not my personal taste at all but its truly a vibe. His portfolio is also more approachable than the design shown but still with that deco flair. Noz's was too post modern in a goofy, Dr. Seuss meets Flinstones way for me, curvy light neutral everything. I think the window film idea is interesting but at odds with the furnishings. Joy's design looked like any catalogue these days, very saleable. Seems like she approached the video like she was working for an actual client leading to a boring result for me.

      Very well explained! Noz’s room suddenly turned Danish Pastel with those windows, she and Darren have the most imagination out of the three.

    I actually follow Joy on social media lol but I actually love Darren’s rendering best. Noz created something I couldn’t connect to. Felt like it looked like a daycare or something that a person interested in playful things would absolutely love to live in 💕 I love playfulness but Darren’s spoke to me most 💕💕💕

    Noz's design was by far my favorite one. I loved the contrast between the geometrical and linear structure of the loft and the organic-shaped furniture, they look like bubbles, it's so cool. Also love how color is implemented in such an original and creative way.
    Joy's style of course is more classic, not the one I'd choose to decorate my house, but I also feel that hers is the most practical design. The vibe it gives makes you feel like you are at home, even if it's your first time being there. Realistically, her design is the most profitable one.
    And, omg Darren's one. I didn't like it at all at first because the fact that he closed the kitchen even more made me feel claustrophobic. However, the more I watch the final result the more I like it. Very original and gives that exotic and luxurious vibe that makes me feel as if I was somewhere in the Middle East/Asia or in a mafia boss house.

    I love all their initial takes on the space. "It's a box," "This has potential," "I love it." So brief but really reflects their styles

    I'm not an interior designer, but for me the rooms ultimate feature is the view. That's what's makes it different vs say looking at a brick wall or a rubbish tip. For me I would design the room which blends and enhance this spectacular view so it harmonise both exterior and interior. The designs shown in my opinion are show pieces of a fashion collection from a cat walk where it could be avant garde and inspiring but it serves almost no purposes in real life or every day life. Having a TV is a very normal thing to have, at least figure out a way to hide a projector screen with a short throw projector, at the end of the day the room and its furniture should be for living not for you to look at from a far.

    All 3 are so cool! Darren's design looks like the headquarters of a final boss in a spy movie - I really like those drapes. Noz's design feels very joyful and experimental. Joy's deisgn is the most timeless, perhaps the one I would choose. Just gives off serious and practical vibes that keep you in the mindset of working and not laying down for too long :P

    1st blue- gold living room looks beautiful, good contrast palette, interesting shapes, but it’s to intense and can make people tired if stay there longer, it’s ok for hotels but not for flat where you wanna rest.
    2nd totally chill, beautiful and soft shapes .oh looks like heaven , and that trick with light omg is the cherry on the top.
    3rd -is very practical,I love those chairs. I feel like she is very good to design places where everyone could live, function. Her designs are always well thoughtful.

    At first, I thought Noz's design was the nicest and Darren's the least that I liked but when I saw the final results, it turned out that Darren's design was just lit and is the best of the three. It's just so inviting, unique, and I love the contrast he uses with colors, shapes, views, heights and especially how he puts them altogether. Noz's design started off promising but it ended up all too white with no contrast neither in shape nor color; the windows are great but don't give the same effect. Joy's design is very classic, elegant, and chic but no plus.

    Interesting how Noz and Darren went almost off-brand with this brief. As a general aesthetic, Noz is closest to my vibe, and altho I found her design too neutral initially, the colored windows almost spoil the effect in the end. Maybe she could have brought in (temporary) color with lighting instead? Darren's is super cool, but is giving me 80's corporate? You can tell he likes looking at himself lol but I would find all those mirrored surfaces off-putting 😬 Joy's was the most practical, but feels a little crowded. Perhaps the barstools could have been simpler?
    All three are great to visit/party in, but not sure if I would live in any of them. Love that they came together in the end to admire and be inspired by each other's work tho 😊

    When they showed us Darren's previous projects in the introduction, I got the feeling that I would like his output the most. And I was right! I really like classic/traditional East Asian and European styles of architecture and interior design, so I'm in love with the mixture of the low seating and the paintings in those ornate frames in his work. The atmosphere of his design is just... I can't even find the words to describe how much I love it. I'm genuinely considering making my living are look like this when I move (though maybe with different sofas instead of the ones Darren used)

    Surprisingly, I like Noz's dining room table and chairs and that she opened up the kitchen, just like Joy did. I like Joy's living room furniture and that she did a contrast wall in the kitchen. I also like her lighting. The one thing I like of Darren's is the drape. There is so much mirror in Darren's space, I think I would forever be knocking into the walls.

    I really like this! This gives much more inspiration than seeing 3 designers do 3 different spaces.
    All 3 designs were amazing in their own way and I'm really interested in looking into each of the designers now.
    I would love to see more of this!
