SEX PISTOLS - IVANHOES, HUDDERSFIELD (Christmas Day, 1977)

On this date in 1977, the SEX PISTOLS played their last UK gig, (Christmas Day, 1977).
As the climax to what became known as Spots (Sex Pistols On Tour Secretly), they gave a Christmas Day party at Ivanhoe's nightclub in Huddersfield (still fondly remembered by those who were there) for the families of firefighters then on strike. The pariah Rotten turned into Santa Claus, benignly allowing children to plaster him with cream cakes.
This was the calm before the storm of the American tour that followed in January 1978.
"Which was a fantastic concert. All the kids wearing …Bollocks T-shirts, totally getting it,” said John Lydon in 2000.
“These were children of the striking fireman, garbage collectors and various other groups that were basically ignored by the government, treated as social pariahs. We were naturally inclined towards social pariahs… playing Chelmsford prison wasn't the thing to do, so you do it.”
“That's exactly what the Pistols were all about, that music hall, sling it out and laugh. I'm not attacking this audience or that audience, I'm attacking the institutions that have contaminated these audiences."

Had no idea about this charity gig and party til I saw Pistol. When I was growing up in the 70s the only reports of the Pistols were negative. This was fucking amazing, and done completely under the radar. True altruism.

I was at the Pistols' Huddersfield gig, and it wasn't for kiddies, there was another one later on for people over 12 :) I taped it on my little recorder and John shouts, 'We're all fuckin' drunk, just like you should be yer punks, are yer 'avin' a good time or what? 'Ow else can yer avoid Christmas except through a bottle of fuckin booze!' Hilarious
