  • An extract from IN CONVERSATION WITH ALAN YENTOB: SIR BOB GELDOF, recorded at the BFI & Radio Times Television Festival in May 2022.
Saturday 13 July 1985 was described as "the Day Rock 'n' Roll Changed the World", but how did Live Aid come about? And how did it change television? Dubbed "the Global Jukebox" and "the greatest show on Earth", the event spanned two continents, featured 16 hours of live music and was watched by more than 1.5 billion people. It raised £110 million for famine relief.
But how did the man behind the show, Bob Geldof, pull off such a feat? What barriers did he have to overcome to make it happen? And how did Live Aid change music and television for ever?
Find out as Sir Bob Geldof joins Alan Yentob, who helped to commission the audacious live broadcast for the BBC, in conversation to relive a momentous landmark in British broadcasting.
Watch the full length interview on Monday 31st October on BBC4 and BBC iPlayer.
