In this last video for 2024 I'm gonna help you guys work out some comping and melodic patterns for the infamous "backdoor" ii-V-I. We'll learn about where the substitution originates from by going through the concept of the dominant/diminished family. Then, I'll show you some comping ideas that use smooth voice leading and some Barry Harris 6/Diminished ideas to make this weird cadence sound smooth as silk.
Once we've got an understanding of how the chord changes work, I'll show you guys 3 killer bebop patterns you can practice playing over the change with. These patterns use lots of different ideas I've gone over in my previous videos so make sure you go check those out if you haven't already!
I'm going to be working hard on finishing up some awesome courses for the good people over at truefire.com in the next few weeks so while there won't be regular videos uploaded until the new year (don't worry patrons, you'll still get your bonus content!), rest assured that there's BIG stuff coming in 2024. I'm so unbelievably excited to be developing this material for truefire! They've got such an incredible roster of educators that have done courses for the site. I'm honored and humbled to be in the company of greats like Frank Vignola, Tim Lerch, and countless others! Make sure you stay tuned for the release date announcement of those courses in 2024.
It's been an incredible journey so far this year since starting this channel. Thank you to all of you from the bottom of my heart for hanging out with me here at the studio. Happy holidays, everyone!
