  • I have pre-built resistance to Harleys from years of hearing horror stories about oil leaks, build quality, poor performance and sky high costs not to mention the negatives about Harley culture. But last year in Vegas I saw a Harley that made me stop and take a second look. “Wow!!!” And I sat on it. “Ohhh Wowww!!” So I had to know. And finally this weekend a local dealer allowed me to take one for a test ride .... sad to report, my fears came true.

    I've always appreciated Harleys but never had any desire to ride...until I sat on a Breakout(2017). A switch in my brain flipped and 16,000 miles later, I still smile like a little kid when I'm riding my Breakout. I LOVE this bike. Great video👍

    Just do it man! take the plunge. I did and am happy I did. Now mind you, I was originally looking at the new Softails, but they were a little too much for me. So I looked for a Harley in great shape, at a decent price and under a low mileage. I find most Harley guys take good care of their bikes, so it's easy to find them in excellent condition. I looked at the used Softails and found myself also checking out the now discontinued used Dyna's. Ended up buying a 2013 Dyna Super Glide Custom. The Breakout is one of the new Softails that I wanted to try out but never had a chance. This is one of my favorite videos you've done so far. Hopefully you get one in the future.

    Hi Michael , great review, thanks a lot! One question: today I tested a BO and a Fat Bob (both with the same exhausts) but there was a vibration difference between them. Fat Bob was so smooth while BO vibrated significantly. Is it what you have noticed as well or maybe something was wrong with the BO test machine? Thanks in advance for your reply. Stay safe!

    • @sstressfl
      @sstressfl  Před 3 lety +2

      The BO I tested didn't vibrate as much as it pulsed when it was accelerating. I don't know if that's normal... I think I'd prefer smooth! The machine I rode had 10,000 miles on it AND it was in for service for a few weeks (they wouldnt tell me why) before it was available to test ride. But maybe the shake is normal on BO? Maybe its traditional? I wish I had more experience with Harley's. Perhaps one of the forums would be a good help?

    I lived on Mascoma St in Lebanon for many years before moving out West. That Harley dealership has moved several times over the past ~50 years. I did a trip back East in 2018 and stopped in to pick up a T-shirt. I've been riding Harleys since 1962 so you don't need to tell me about the sound, torque and look of those bikes. I'm currently considering a Breakout although the MoCo is intentionally limiting production to create the impression that this model is in demand. The dealerships are asking ~$7k over MSRP so I'll be sitting it out until sanity returns. Currently have an old FXR Evolution that is a rocket and my FXSTC that is my daily driver. Also a Road King for log trips. Wish you rode down my old street but that run down to Caanan is a nice putt too.

    • @sstressfl
      @sstressfl  Před rokem

      Since 62! That’s so awesome. I grew up during the AMF years and I only remember people complaining about the poor quality of Harleys and oil leaks. It left me with a berry negative perception. It wasn’t until I saw the Breakout in Vegas that I got curious. That thing stopped me in my tracks. First time a Harley had ever done that. After riding it, I can’t get it out of my head. The new one is nice but doesn’t have the raked fork. It’s a fat boy with diff forks and a larger front wheel. Still looks good! But not the same as the 2018-2020 model that had the revised chassis. That’s the one I want 👍 I’m glad you enjoyed seeing the old neighborhood.

      1) It’s a Joe Rocket Sonic 2.0 😎 They sell them in long! Mine is a medium long. Fits me like it was made for me. Fully armored. Thick 1.3mm leather. Ventilated zip out panels. Winter liner. Cool looking. It’s my fav. Here’s a link amzn.to/2ZY06Oe for more info but they sell them in many places. 2) If you’ve been riding for a little while, then yes! It’s an easy bike to ride. Very balanced. But it’s an expensive bike to insure and to repair. Harley parts are not cheap. If it’s your first bike, I’d go cheaper, get experience, then buy more expensive. Does that make sense?

    What a fun video. I clicked on it thinking it would be another "Harley's suck" video but I was surprised. 😂 Like you, I came from sport bikes to Harley's. My last sport bike was almost 18 years ago now I think. The last one was a Triumph. Before that it was Ducati. Before that it was Kawasaki (ZX-11, ZX-7). Like you, I thought Harley's were mechanical nightmares, horrible culture of snobbish riders, etc. All of which is patently false. The bikes are quite nicely made, very reliable, I don't have a drop of oil in my garage and the people are outstanding. I will say there are groups within groups in the Harley community of course, but this is true of all hobbies. You have the hardcore guys that think others are posers for this reason or that. If you ride with a helmet in my state about 30% of the Harley riders you pass won't wave to you. If you take the helmet off nearly all wave. For sport bike riding it's accepted to be in full leathers and helmets are part of the feel/culture of sport bikes. People paint their helmets to reflect their personalities. On Harley's the proper riding attire is a pair of jeans, boots, a ball cap on backwards and glasses. Modifications are almost mandatory in the Harley realm. A stock bike isn't fawned over as much as a custom bike at rides and events. But, as you noted, there's something about Harley's you don't get from other bikes. The engines are nothing short of amazing. I love the fact they marry old school tech with modern tech. The riding comfort is second to none. Anyway, I hope you get your Harley one of these days.

    My wife suggested Harley Breakout from many others that we were looking at, "this bike is you". Coming from my first motorcycle 85 gpz turbo, 77 xs 750, (girlfriend/wife)92 gsxr 750, 03 monster 1000ds. I didn't do a test drive when I bought mine but I felt like you without even sitting on it. Sexy as hell, if my wife knew the feelings that were bubbling up inside she would be jealous. I love the Saddlemen LS solo seat that came with it, much better than stock. VH big radius pipes and the VH tuner too. I tried wearing my Vanson cobra padded jacket, it doesn't feel right and I Iove that jacket but it doesn't fit the part. Mrs. Byrne, Michael needs this motorcycle. He won't tell you how much it has stirred his soul and won't let him think of another. The Breakouts essence has become part of Michael, they must become one, it is ordained. My wife just laughed, maybe a little heavy :)

    May I suggest to you to join the Harley model specific groups on FB.
    My experience is that there are often posts about people letting go of their bike for a decent price,
    as long as they know the bike will switch into good hands and to someone who loves the model as much as they do.
    Especially easy if you make a post into the group asking for bikes that are for sale.
    Another nice features is that you can look at all their posts that they made in the group which often includes lots of pictures, videos etc.
    Needless to say they will also provide you with lots of information themselves and most of the owners are located in the US.

    • @A_Ride_To
      @A_Ride_To Před 3 lety +1

      @@sstressfl Yes I need to say that those groups are pretty interesting, like a little micro cosmos on FB.
      I myself ride a Harley Blackline which one could say is the predecessor of the Breakout (but with a skinny rear tire),
      being build from ‘11 till ‘13 and it’s crazy how often people actually put them up for sale in the group compared to other places who rarely offer them
      (either because of the switch to a touring model or because of a money shortage).
      A nice little side effect is that often people will post for how many bucks a model actually sold at that specific time,
      or how much they paid for a bike like this, so the seller will not go crazy with the price and the buyer will know how much the bike should be worth.
      I can not get the full usage out of those groups tho because I live outside of the US, but they are still great fun.

      I think with proper direction/lessons you can learn on anything. And this bike is so low so balanced, I can’t imagine it would be a problem. But when I first started riding street bikes I wanted light weight and affordable. So I bought a 600cc bike that weighed 380lbs and cost $3k. The Breakout is almost 700 lbs it’s very expensive and insurance is very high. If you lay it down it will cost a lot to repair. While you’re learning it’s possible you’ll drop it. Maybe more than once. So while I understand the temptation I think you might have more fun on a lighter and cheaper bike. It’ll reduce stress and allow you to learn without a lot of worry 👍

    Ok, does anyone have any idea what the hell this guy initially rode? Being that most Harley’s are large displacement and even sportsters are generally 1200cc wtf 500cc is he talking about? Frankly if you went out of your way to get on whatever that was that’s on you. Every HD dealer is loaded with heavy cruisers and touring bikes….

      Ya know one very cool thing about youtube/fb groups, etc is that you get to see incredibly diverse opinions, experiences, histories... and I have to admit, I learn from all of 'em. I always say that behind every person's eyes is a universe of life and memories that is completely unique to that individual.... what's strange to them might be normal to me and vice versa. And in this context? No matter how weird we are, riding brings us together :)

    Harleys are useless piles of rubbish. Entice you with looks only to make you hate life because they are 40 years behind the times. Buy a Yamaha Roadstar or a Honda Shadow. Avoid Harleys like covid-19 bro. Complete garbage. Yes I have a disdain for them due to all the years watching buddies deal with them.

    • @sstressfl
      @sstressfl  Před 3 lety +5

      I have the same history... and the price is so high. Its exactly why I hate that I like this bike so much. It was a true joy to ride. And it looks amazing. I plan to continue to ride other cruisers - because the entire cruiser genre is new to me - so we shall see how it plays out. But, that Breakout.... daaaaang.

      @@sstressfl The only Harley I'd own is a V-rod. Hopefully one day you'll have an opportunity to ride one. Porsche did a phenom job on the engine. As for myself and all the years riding all sorts of various bikes I'll stick with big four island bikes. Although, man there is nothing like a Triumph triple when it comes to the torque and hp blend. They really have done a number with their 3-bangers.

      @@betterthannotgoodmtb I'm a happy V-Rod Muscle owner for 5 years. The bike is absolutely bulletproof and a work of design art with all the aluminum castings and that hydroformed frame. Is it everybody's cup of tea? Nope. But it sure is quick and despite the 670 lb weight and 240 tire, handles fairly well. You should try to snag a ride on one sometime. It's definitely not your typical Harley product.
