The answer is no - they have never been a bad band. Their final album Clockwork Angels is a masterpiece. What separates Rush from all the other bands that started in the 70s (and earlier) is that Rush's new songs have always been awesome. Unlike other bands, people want to see the new songs live in concert. Nobody wants to see the Rolling Stones' new songs when they see them. So awesome to watch you discovering them for the first time. You should react to their "Fear Trilogy" - The Enemy Within, The Weapon, and Witch Hunt.

They've never been bad, but have evolved over the years. Some fans only like certain eras. I like them all.

Can you honestly consider their debut album, true "Rush" though? Without Neil's complexity and thoughtful lyrics, they were just an amateur version of Led Zeppelin wannabe kids.

I remember seeing an interview with Geddy where he says (paraphrasing) rehearsals always start with them sounding like a really bad Rush tribute band, and it gets discouraging. But after a few rehearsals, they start to sound like a pretty good Rush tribute band, and that’s when they know they’re making progress. Funny man! 😂😂

I've read comments today saying that Alex is one of the best, but he's not a shredder. As I've written in those comments "HOW F-ING FAST CAN ANYONE GO" "HOW MUCH MORE ACCURATE CAN ONE BE"? If people don't think Alex can't shread, they haven't seen Alex play! PERIOD!
COME ON, GEDDY LEE IS SHREDDING HERE! All 3 shread on each one of their instruments! How about playing fast and complex lines on guitar and bass, then try to play the Taurus foot pedals accurately at the same time like both Alex and Geddy do! I never see any other "shredders" do that live!
One must remember that this closer is the final song in the second encore after a THREE OUR CONCERT!! Not bad for three old dudes, eh? 😎🎸🎶🇨🇦🔥

This performance shows how much 'fun' these well seasoned, best friends in their 50's have while performing. Sure they changed it up from the original (and I don't blame them - 40 years of playing the same track - how do you keep the 'groove' going?), but what a change! Rush has always prided itself on their perfection playing live - this just cements how tight they are as a band!
Indeed - like a fine wine - they just got better with age...they never stopped improving.
Although to you missed seeing them live - they fortunately captured MANY of their performances, especially in the last two decades. I think every tour was released on CD and DVD - check them all.

This performance was a tribute to Cleveland, WMMS for playing this song and making it in the USA.
This was my first Rush show. This encore blew my 17 year old mind into another dimension 🔥

I've gotten in the habit of watching this version of Working Man at least once a day. Not a bad habit to have developed.
I met Rush since early 80's, and i never left... The best of all time...
I had the pleasure of seeing Rush 53 times including the final show at the Forum.... Needless to say.... EPIC!
Alex does not get the credit that he deserves.. one of the best ever for sure. pure and amazing ..
I was at a Blue Jays game in Toronto a couple years back and there sat Geddy a couple rows down. I was so star struck i could barely breathe! Dang near fainted like a little girl. It was weird yet awesome.✌
What’s phenomenal to me is that this song was their first radio “hit” and it put them on the map waaaaay back when...but they use it to close their show and mix it up so brilliantly. They make an almost 40year old song a total Jam. A master class for masters.
They were never bad, never not in their prime and I am genuinely sad you will never get to see them live. It was always an experience to be remembered!
I lost it when I saw Alex playing off the fretboard and was still creating such sounds ! They're jamming like when they were first starting out as teenagers. They were just such incredible performers and they always had fun doing it. At the end of the day that"s what it's all about !

I have had the privilege of seeing Rush over 30 time live. Spending those moments with Rush I have experienced musical genius that cant even be described in words and this video captures a moment that really shows the magic. My eyes were always on the professor. RIP Neil
Seeing Neil’s facial expressions in “where’s my thing / here it is” live was also priceless.
You cannot deny the joy and entertainment value this band brought to live concerts.
Hell this song was after a 3+ hour concert.
Rush has a fantastic catalog. One of their best is the last one - Clockwork Angels. Songs like Headlong Flight are mind boggling. The last of my 25 Rush shows was on the R40 tour and I did have a sense that it might be the last time I see this in person.

I was privileged to be at the last R40 show in Toronto, the one filmed for the dvd, and it was epic and sad at the same time. Not the concert but just knowing that whole anticipation, a week away, then it’s show day experience being such an integral part of my life, and that was the last time, well it was hard. I wish I could do it all again.
The fact that they're only three people has become the fourth member of the band. I saw them almost every time they came to London since 76 and it was always reliably an AAA show. You knew it was gonna be a great night.
63 and lived in NY, they toured relentlessly throughout their career. Rush is ALWAYS BEST SERVED LIVE!!! Been with them since 74 and have been to no less than 100 shows.....They NEVER disappoint! Talk about LOUD! Always have great optics and throw in a few nuggets at every show....Rush can be summed up like this....complicate the music and fool the listener without us knowing....try and tap your foot to a Rush song, then you'll know.

You can see, they were having fun! They were good guys, they didn't fool around on their wives, they didn't let drugs ruin them, they didn't let fame and fortune (money) wreck the band. They split everything 3 ways. They were brothers who looked out for each other. They had a passion to become the best musicians they could become. They became just that! Best friends, brothers who cared for each other, their families and they became the best musicians around who played much more than their main instruments! This is why RUSH FANS ARE RABBID RUSH FANS! Rush reached the pinnacle of fame and their talents. They are the template for musicisns, friends, family men and won just about every possible award they could either by their peers, public/fan reaction and the dreaded critics! Tim, check out Alex's speach for the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame! It tells a story without saying a word! Also it shows Alex's contempt for the R+R Hall of Fame! They never had a speach like it and they never will!. To throw the middle finger very gently, once again, without saying a word! It's PRICELESS! THESE GUYS ARE A CLASS ACT! THEY STUCK BY THEIR GUNS! PERIOD!
Saw them on the Time Machine tour & the Clockwork Angels tour and they were so brilliant. Men in their 60's doing the live thing better than most in their prime!
I've been fortunate enough to see every Rush show since the ''Hold your fire'' tour so here is my suggestion to you. I strongly recommend you get yourself a DVD called REPLAY X3. This collection contains 3 of Rush's best live performances : Exit Stage Left (Moving picture tour 1981)- Grace under pressure tour - A show of hands (Hold your fire tour). The level of quality is just amazing. You also might want to check out ''Different stages'' (Test for echoes tour)(Audio only) as the set list for that 3 hour show is one of the best they've ever had. Then you can checkout the R30 (live video) which is also brilliant. If you have a projector at home... Put them on with the volume as loud as humanly possible, get some hash or potent weed ( the smell is part of the real experience Rush concert) a beer and enjoy !!!! I hope after viewing and listening to all this that you won't feel so bad about never seeing them live.

As you might have guessed from the very end, this was the final finale of that show. All that energy after a 3-hour show with ONE short break. And they're all pushing 60 at this point. Crazy. Holy shit I have seen countless live RUSH shows. Alex absolutely rips in this show.
I think Rush had a secret passion for Reggae. You saw hints of it in The Spirit of Radio as well. They also have always loved abrupt transitions, and making them as seamless as possible. Great reaction!
That is the funnest live performance of any band I've seen.
Don't know what they were like prior to Neil's family tragedies (I only saw them in concert after the hiatus) but I imagine those sad experiences freed them up a bit ... but I think they always tried the odd 'new' thing within the music for a concert, or bringing something more up-to-date. Time Machine tour is fantastic ... the Encore also featured La Villa Strangiato with a polka beginning (and is the 'cleanest' live version IMO - this one or studio for me) and the concert opened with a skit that had Spirit Of Radio being played in a handful of different genres (search YT for "Spirit of Radio with Intro Time Machine"), you'll also see the fun them!
They always...leave it all on the table...live..ever since the played high schools and bars....
I've never been a big fan of the debut album, because Neil's lyrics really mean a lot to me, but when I saw them play this on this tour, it blew my mind! Like you said, they got better over time & went out at the top of their game. How many bands can say that? I also saw the Who's "first" farewell tour, lol. Glad Rush didn't sink to that kind of thing, ie multiple farewell tours.
I really don't like anything off their debut... or first few albums for that matter. It wasn't until Neil started exploring more emotional topics that really hit me, that I can say I became a true fan. I mean, I learned to play this song as well as a lot of their early stuff on guitar for my cover band and it was fun. Rush is still better than 99% of any band that was around during their 40 years, but the actual hardcore "fan" in me, didn't come out until I really gave Signals a thorough listening.

In their Early years Rush came across as pretty serious on stage but as years went by and they become more adept at playing these complex songs live they introduced little elements of fun ( like the intro to this) and their videos
This is probably Alex's most self indulgent solo and it's totally brilliant
Another similar performance from the same show. time machine tour, was La villa strangiato , another great fun start yet again , and another masterclass instrumental. you have to see the intro to the time machine tour, leading to The spirit of radio, great comedy from the boys, oscar winning performance by Alex lifeson. You can't go wrong with the time machine tour, great show one of if not their best, especially getting the crowd involved. Another great instrumental from the show...LEAVE THAT THING ALONE.
@@philipshort7491 I've been thinking about why that tour was so great. Since it was targeting specifically the Moving Pictures album, a lot of casual music fans who haven't heard much since that album would have turned out for the first time in a while, if not ever, to see Rush - and been blown away by how good they still were. Also, they had a few tours under their belt since getting back together, they were playing really well, and they were still having fun.

They never played Working Man like that until this tour, the Time Machine tour where they played the whole of the Moving Pictures album. They knew a lot of old Rush fans would be coming out maybe for the first time in a while. So the band had something to prove, which is just what they did. They were particularly on fire that tour!

Dude, you just made my morning! This is one of my top Rush performances. I LOVE seeing reactions to this video… the faces everyone makes when they transition out of the reggae opening and proceed to lose their freakin’ minds is priceless! 😂 I’m pretty sure they had to put Alex’s guitar out if it’s misery… what he did should be illegal. 🤟🏼 Love it!
The guys did seem to have more fun in their later shows. Yup, they be jamming. One of my favorite tours, just a legendary experience to watch them live. The Time Machine Tour, was dubbed because the did the whole album "Moving Pictures" front to back. I couldn't wait to see your reaction because, besides the moments of greatness on stage, (since you play) there's an added admiration if you know what I mean. The part where Geddy and Alex are soloing with Neil holding it down is just pure candy. Cheers, nice reaction.

which was an industrial town at the time 1974. People called the radio station and asked them to play the new Zepplin song. LOL

Very special and very RARE Peart drum-set, one of a kind
I got to see R40 in Salt Lake... a few shows before the very last one ever. It was fun as they started the show with their new stuff and ended with Working Man. The set progressively got older and simpler, etc. It was a really fun farewell to the fans and their own music... a rewind almost. I honestly can not think of any other group that has ever had so little drama, stayed together for over 40 years, and banged out album after album as complete masterpieces. Experimented, changed, grown, but still remained themselves. This is what music should be. People who love what they do.
Good to see you back, glad you are feeling better to get back to the working man yourself.

The reason they recorded this in Cleveland was a Cleveland radio station first played Working Man over and over because it was requested so much it launched this album in the USA

This is about my favorite version of this song. So so good....WAY better with age.
i m 60 and i had the chance to see RUSH in Montreal 3times or 4 i dont recal to much those years The 80 s where the best years of Rock and heavy . Rush best canadian band and theire s a lot of good band . another trio The Warning from Mexico amazing musicien young band you can see them growned up the future big band of Rock go take a look . they have cover histeria from Muse Ale at bass was 9 at the time the bass lines are fast and the timing are on the spot thanks Rush is the Best
You will never see a bad performance from them!! Geddy’s voice does lose its range later, but they just usually tweet the songs to his ability! They put on a great show and always switch things up to keep it interesting and their skits are hilarious! They played this just as good at nearly 60 yrs old as they did when they were 20.. even better, I think! And this is at the END of a 3+ hour show!! Great band!! Amazing and funny guys!! Doesn’t get better than this!! Sorry you missed them live!! I’ll be looking for “2112” on the new channel... (I’m still waiting...lol)

Bro , I grew up outside cle, and grew up with rush , graduation hi school in 84 , and rush was a daily routine to me ! Of course I took it all for granted , but 2112 n befor was just a holy s-t these guys r great , n then moving pics thru the 80 s was almost better , in some ways , they were better! But yea , wmms radio , was how rush got noticed , a cle. Fm station, and rush n cle. are connected ! And having the time tested forever will b good band that is rush while I grew up in real time ? Mind blowing , running to buy new records , taking guitar lessons, the extra fun going ons, lol , it’s a privilege to have been there! And to hear u talk about your parents seeing them and influencing you with envy ? It has revolved beyond 1 generation and will forever affect others. Makes my time and ears proud to c you play tribute to my “ music class mates “ in real time as I grew up, and envy your parents ! You truly have the grasp , of what it means , to b and grow a RUSH “ affectee “ and a RUSH appreciative, deservingly so, true lover of their music !
It’s hard to believe that music this awesome came from only three guys.
Through the first 30 years or so they were very compositional, but the last few tours they became much more improvisational. There live shows always had a surprise or two, an extended guitar break or a country intro, to switch things up eventually they would add short film productions featuring the band in various comedic roles ( freaking hilarious) The constant through all the years and all the tours, each and every night they went to work and gave the best performance possible. No shortcuts, no compromises and always making sure the fans got their best. They were very serious about that and it was always fun. So yes, they were serious about the music but sometimes they were seriously funny as well.

I saw them in Tulsa for this tour. They were consistently one of the best live acts ever. Their retirement as a band and Peart's death has been a massive hole in music.
Man, but I LOVE this performance so much!! So glad you did a reaction to it :-) Just when you think they can't get any better they go and do something like this - absolute freaking legends! I am sooo glad I managed to see them live a number of times before we lost Neil - all three of them are simply GOATs. Look forward to seeing what you do next from their catalogue :-)

I love this version. They had fun with this one. Glad to see you do it. This is evolving into one of my favorite live songs because they always rocked on it in their later concerts. Has a spot for being their first breakthrough hit and the last song they ever played. Thanks for the reaction. Love these guys live. Their friendship is what puts the icing on the cake for this band for me. Three good guys that are friends. Don’t have to worry about them letting us down.

This is what happens to a band, where egos don't run away, where they remain friends and colleagues, and never compromise on the music. Do that for 40+ years, and you know one another so well that every time they play you know exactly what the other is going to do, when they are going to do it, and even if one of them shifts and does something different, they know one another well enough they just flow with it, and it sounds like they have rehearsed it 10,000 times even if it is their first time. Some have accused Rush of "showing off" - nope, they don't show off, they are just that damn good.
