The ultimate Rush performance is "Xanadu" from the Exit Stage Left tour. You will literally not believe how perfect it is. Geddy plays bass, six string guitar, keyboards & synths, bass pedals, and sings. Alex plays twelve and six string guitars and pedals; and Neil plays an entire orchestral percussion section, including tubular bells & glockenspiel. It is the perfect live performance and incredibly brilliant! Trust me. I call it three geniuses with seven necks. Watch to figure out why.

The comic-book style 2112 with the lyrics and some of Neil's and Ayn's quotes was quite well done - and it is a the studio version I believe - I think that video really adds to the experience for a lot of people as they can actually follow the story of the character. A few liberties were taken I think, but otherwise a great video especially for reaction vids I would say.

Seen Rush twice live. They never disappoint. Going to take those memories to my grave. Best band ever and are we not graced to live at this time and share the planet with these boys. Being a musician myself, I have never been so influenced by these masters. You really have to appreciate the musicianship, technicality and true performers that they were. WOW.

It was May 1981 in Rochester, NY at the Rochester Community War Memorial Arena… I was a senior in HS and my birthday is the 14th of May… My brothers and my best friend Mike and I drove to
See them. Anyways, it was the moving pictures tour, the concert was amazing. The next morning my friend and I went to this place called Chet’s Luncheonette… As we were finishing breakfast I looked up and sitting at the counter was Neil Peart and someone else (roadie or tech?) I knew Neil was a private guy but I idolized him. I knew he didn’t give autographs but I needed to acknowledge him (this was long before phone cams/ or digital cams). I told Mike I’m gonna say something, I went to the register and paid and told the woman “I’d like to pay for those guys at the end of the counters meal as well.” As I got closer I got scared, I stopped and said, “Mr. Peart, thanks for all the music, I’ve been a fan since 76…”
He looked up and smiled and said, “Hey man, thanks for the support and being a fan…”
    I think I said, “Yuh”
And walked out… It was one of my fondest memories, it was surreal…
Thanks for the warm memory. R.I.P. Neil Peart and long live the mighty Rush! 👊🏻

Just please keep in mind that Rush is one of the rare bands whose oeuvre actually constitutes its own genre.
They were a band that never stood still and ( ... you might remember this from Behind the Lighted Stage) wrote the music they thought they would like, themselves, rather than what record-buyers might like.
All of which is to say that, if you want to get to know Rush's music, it's going to take some time - because 19 studio albums and a dozen live ones have left us with A LOT of music!

Saw Rush 4 times during my high school years in the 70's. First time was when they had released their 3rd album "Caress Of Steel" and were opening for Kiss (Rush's so called "down the tubes tour" when their record label was about to drop them). Then 2112 came out and they were the headliner. My favorite band growing up, no one rocked harder than Rush in those days!

How three guys pushing 60 can end a three hour show by rocking out harder than any group half their age. If you check out the lights over the stage during the reggae section they're red, yellow and green for the Jamaican flag, thats how much into detail these guys are. 😊 p.s. that little end riff is off Cygnus XI.

When I first heard RUSH, in the 1970’s, they were only for nerds. About half of my first period art class listened to them. And Geddy’s voice could charitably called divisive.
I’m surprised how opinions have changed over 45 years.
I think of this performance as their pinnacle as a rock band.

In addition they actually have a few music videos that were made in studio. Those are normally great too because again you get the extra added pleasure of seeing them actually play the music. Please do a reaction to Rush - Xanadu - Exit...Stage Left - Live 1981. It is possibly one of the greatest live rock performances of all time. I never get tired of watching this; my favorite part is the dueling guitars! As I mentioned in your last Rush reaction, I am a new Rush fan, but I am in awe of their live performances especially. How three guys create all of that sound is a wonder to behold! One of my favorite live performance videos is from their "keyboard era" in the 1980s: 'Mission", Live from Birmingham 1988. The lyrics are inspiring, Geddy multitasks at the bass, keyboard, foot pedals and singing, Neil has a xylophone solo. Finally, Alex's guitar solo is especially soulful. It's one of my favorite Rush videos and the live performance has an immediate impact even today.

Live performance of their first hit song redone partially in Reggae style. The original arrangement received massive airplay on a Rock station in Cleveland. That sort of put them on the map, a little ol' 3 piece band from Toronto. This special concert was their way of thanking the city, I think. Their first album did not include Neal Peart who was the drummer and composer for all their subsequent albums.

Great reaction!!! You obviously appreciate artistical musicianship. Rush is absolutely the best 3-piece band ever (quite frankly top five best band ever, no matter the members). Pure musicianship and fluid artistry in each of them and their instruments along with the pure chemistry between them.
Welcome aboard the Rush Train!!! Now time to venture down the RUSH rabbit hole.
I would suggest the songs below to add to your Rush journey and reactions. All of these are absolutely fire!!! Especially all of the LIVE instrumentals with Geddy’s Bass, Alex’s Guitar, and Neil’s percussive artistry.
    - La Villa Strangiato - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental - custom "carnival" intro) - original was 1978. Pure musicianship!!! UNMATCHED - best instrumental EVER. This was performed just BEFORE Working Man at the concert.
    - Xanadu...Live version 1981 Exit Stage Left tour...will leave you speechless from pure musicianship...original was 1977.
    - YYZ…live from Rio in 2002 (instrumental)…original was 1981
    - Freewill... Live from Snakes and Arrows Tour 2007 - original was 1980
    - Best Intro Ever - Live version (R30 tour 2004) - various riffs from their 1970's songs leading into Spirit of Radio - original was 1980
    - Leave that Thing Alone - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental) - original was 1993
    - The Garden (Clockwork Angels tour live) - original was 2012
    - Malignant Narcissism (instrumental) and Drum Solo - Live 2008 Snakes and Arrows Tour - original was 2007
    - Closer to the Heart (Live 1998 Different Stages) - original was 1977
    - Limelight...studio version - original was 1981.
    - Subdivisions...studio version or live version - original was 1982
    - Fly by Night - original was 1975
    - Also...Neil Peart's Drum Solo Live from Frankfurt 2004. He was The Professor...a pure musician and percussionist...not just a "drummer". Be ready to be amazed by not just his hand coordination...but most of all his foot coordination...basically his feet being completely individual in timing from his hands during segments of this performance. He was the master of this technique.

She found this on Rush’s first album in the studio. The song was over 7 minutes long. After it was over the phones rang of the hook because everybody wanted to know the name of the band. The very ending was their 'concert sign-off' (it's from Cygnus X1 - that's one for later, a concept album) - this was the finale song of the concert - I saw the concert a few days after this one on the tour (and again a year later on the 2 year tour- had to see this concert twice!), and about 95% of that performance was identically face melting, basically like most of Neil's drum solos - he does have some sections that are improvised at each performance, but mostly they are just that good. Not sure if you've checked out La Villa Strangiato yet - it's an instrumental based off a recurring nightmare Alex used to have - great instrumental, really shows off their abilities - I like the studio version the best but there are quite a few live ones that amaze, some that are just silly. Also a must see if you haven't is YYZ live in Rio - the audience there was amazing - another of Rush's instrumentals - basically a drum/bass groove with some other magic. YYZ is the airport code for their home town airport - Toronto Pearson International airport, and when flying back home into airport they would hear the Morse code for YYZ over the transponder, which is how the song begins - people usually wonder as it has a very strange intro if you go in not knowing.

This song, in Cleveland, is what put Rush on the map in 1974.
As the story goes, a radio DJ in Cleveland needed a long song to cover for a restroom break, so she played this one (it was over 7 minutes). The lyrics resonated with the working class community in Cleveland, and the song took off and launched Rush’s career.
Neil Peart was not with the band at that point. He joined after the original drummer left.

I really enjoyed watching this with you - you have a new subscriber! I think I was one of RUSH's original 50 female fans seeing them for the first time in 1974 and for the last time in 2015. Welcome aboard the RUSH express - from one redheaded girl to another!
The boys are definitely jokesters! They love to throw us curve balls with old standards. This is an example of them starting with reggae for fun (not the original beginning of the song). Another example of this is beginning La Villa Strangiato. It opens with a carnival theme during the same concert. Another fun,🔥🔥🔥performance!

Great reaction!! You remind me of another redhead, my wife, that didn't know Rush until I introduced her to it (when we were dating). She's a musician, and was completely blown away (as I was) at how these 3 guys could make such a sound, be so tight doing so, AND appear like they're having a blast performing! She also loved their concerts as there was never a line for the women's washroom - as females were definitely part of the minority (as you would've heard in the documentary!)
Please keep up this Rush journey - you will discover that, besides being nice guys, they are 3 of the most talented musicians around - making intelligent (lyrically & musically), rocking tunes ever! (and I'm not just saying that because they're home of Toronto is less than 100km from my home!)
Future considerations: Subdivisions, Limelight, Red Barchetta, Red Sector A, Xanadu (do the Live Exit Stage Left version), and eventually 2112 (there is a wonderful graphic novel video that really displays the 'story' of that epic song!) Cheers from Canada, eh!

Unlike other bands, they didnt fight over money. Neil wrote the lyrics but Alex and Geddy composed the songs so they all benefitted equally. In some bands, the songwriters make more money but that isn't fair to the others who contributed their instrumentation/compositions to the song. Many bands have broken up over jealousy.

My girlfriend is a huge music lover but not a big Rush fan like I am and she went to see Beyond the Lighted Stage with me when they did the anniversary release of it in the movie theaters and she's right with you. She can appreciate my love of the band and the music, but just loves the guys. You can't help but see they are just good people and don't take themselves too seriously. If you enjoyed the documentary i highly recommend the audible version of Geddys new book, "My Effin' Life" as he reads the audible version himself, with a few guest appearances :) An amazing life, family and friends... not a big rock star life story.

    Hello
You probably wondering how their concert was recorded live in Cleveland? Back in mid 70's, Rush was just starting out as a band. But they had very hard time to break thru US's music market. But that time, major rock station in Cleveland with call letter, WMMS aka "The Buzzard", one of station's DJs played one of Rush's songs (rumor is he or she played a long song from Rush because they have to relieve themselves without any dead air broadcast). This is Rush's way to say thank you to station and its listeners in Cleveland. By the way, this same tour, Time Machine that my friends and I have seen in West Palm Beach in 2010.

If you love Rush, I'd urge you to check out a Canadian 2-piece band called Crown Lands. Incredible sound and music they can produce between the two of them and clearly influenced by Rush.
Maybe look at Context: Fearless Part 1 Live as an introduction - they are phenomenal.

Back in the 70s, not many people knew Rush. Because of the length of their songs, radio wouldn’t play them because they couldn’t get in as many commercials. Besides, reporters for Rolling Stone and DJs couldn't understand their music, so instead bashed them all of the time.. It was musicians, like myself, that gravitated to bands that make complicated music, like Yes, Jethro Tull, Emerson Lake and Palmer and of course Rush.
I am a guitarist and played in bands in the late 70s, 80s and 90s and I had never heard any music like Rush before. Their themes and their musical abilites was so challenging. My band would play Rush songs at a time of the early 80s and the crowd would think they were our songs. When people asked if those were our songs I just said, “we wish” then I’d tell them about Rush, but because they weren't on radio, most people had never heard their music. People would always confuse them with Mahogany Rush whenever you’d say the name RUSH.
If you get the DVD of their concert in Rio, you can see each musician playiing throughout the concert. It allows you to split the screen 4 ways, one wide shot of the whole band and then each musician in separate boxes. It’s really great, but you still need to watch each song three times to watch each guy throughout the song, especially pn instrumentals like YYZ and La Villa Strangiato. Rush has several instrumentals that are real popular. Where’s My Thing and Leave That Thing Alone are a couple others, but YYZ and La VIlla Strangiato are the two most legendary that they pllay at every concert.
It was their first time in South America, so they were filling soccer arenas with like 60,000 people in attendence and everyone sang every lyric of every song, but when they played YYZ, an instrumental, everone was singing along with the guitar melody, as if it had lyrics. It’s really insane and awesome to watch.
You can hear the crowd over the band. Rush fans are unjlike any other band’s fans. Very dedicated, which is how they got into the hall of fame. The HAll Of Fame selections are made by the same idiots from Rolling Stone and other publoications that hate Rush with a passion. They tried everything to wreck their careers, but it failed because people found them anyway, mostly though a lot of touring.
In 2013, The HOF let people online vote for the final act to go in that year, a cast of non-rock and roll artists, except for Heart. They were the only legitamate rock band selected that year. The jerks at the HOF probably thought that Rush could not win such a poll because their fanbase is so small. Yes, they are small, but extreemly dedicated to the band, enough so they would all take the time to register and vote on such a silly poll.
The poll was for fun, not official and they reserevd the right to dissmiss it and choose someone else. The problem is, when they publishred the results, Rush had garnered 25% of the total vote! That's insane. No other group was close to even double digit percentages, yet Rush acoounted for one quarter of the total votes spread out among hundreds of artists. Even those asshats at the HOF couldn’t ignore such a sweep, so they reluctantly made it official and Rush was inducted to the R&RHOF.
The first kick in Jann Wrenner’s teeth was the explosion of an ovation that lasted for over 2 minutes. It was the loudest and longest ovation in the history of the R&RHOF history. It caught him completely off-guard and he had to step back when he heard it. he never got to say the name of the band. As soon as he says, “…and from Toronto” the place lit up like a bomb wemt off.
Dave Grohl did the induction speech with Taylor Hicks (RIP) and it was the best induction ever. Dave even called out Rolling Stone, the inhibitor of Rush’s success and how the band succeeded in spite of their efforts. It’s a great speech and can be found on CZcams, but warning, it is NSFW. A whole lot of F-bombs, but it’s funny and so true. Grohl, liike most drummers, is a huge Rush fan.
It’s amazing just how many famous musicians from the 1980s up to topday were inspired by Rush. Even bands that sound nothing like them. Dream Theater makes since since they’re progressive, but Pearl Jam or the Police are a bit shocking? Even Smashing Pumpkins are huge Rush fans and a huge list of more. There were several famous musician at the ceremony that stayed standing the longest. I think that Tommy Morello is still standing? He stood the longest, but with him I saw Chad Smith (or it was Will Farrel, it’s hard to tell them apart), Dave Grohl and several others.
No band was more deserving of the praise that night than Rush. They may have gotten in with Wrenner’s hands twisted behind his back, but they did derserve it more than any other indectee that night.

Performance for the ages ( from the aged😂). I will always enjoy working man for its straight ahead, rock style but it’s one of the least nuanced songs in their catalog for that reason and there are others that massage my brain much more effectively. Try Analog Kid, thecamera eye, or, distant early warning for example. Rush on sister!

The ending vamp is the entrance hook from one of their tour de force songs, "Cygnus X1." They've never played that song in it's entirety, due to the vocals being too far up in the stratosphere for Geddy to sing at the end of a show, let alone at this "winding down" point in their career. Instead, they usually would find a spot in the set to play a few lines from it to tease us. Great reaction! You have wonderful energy! Cheers.

My first of (only) 2 live experiences with Rush was this tour, but at the Manchester MEN Arena. Loved EVERYTHING.
I was taken aback by the extra stuff they did: funny videos on the big screen. I think it would be cool for you to watch the skits. The opening one is called "The Real History of Rush", and it leads straight into Spirit of the Radio. So funny! 😁
