When I was in high school one of my best friend's father had a car audio sales/installation business. For a demonstrator, he took an 1980 Camaro and tricked it out with the most high end system he could devise. Two powered subs, 8 woofers, 8 mids and 6 tweeters. The trunk was covered with amps, crossovers, relay blocks...and the car had two alternators and two batteries. He entered it into many contest throughout the 80's. The reason I told this story was that to demonstrate the full capability, he used the Moving Pictures CD as the main sound track because it was recorded so well and engineered to perfection. I used to play the bass, my brother played drums, and our best friend played guitar, back in the day I think we played the whole exit stage left album, I can't explain what it felt like to actually play YYZ, it was incredible It was like being in the middle of a whirlwind! It's like I get goosebumps just thinking about it. The song just takes over and you're just rushing as fast as you can to keep up. It's just incredible. Because my brother was the drummer it was really important for us to be really really tight. Those were such awesome days. Being in the barn, playing la ivia Strangiato, over and over again, trying to get the monsters section just right. Playing spirit of radio, and counting those beats, going right into Freewill. It was incredible really. The first song they ever learned was Fly by Night. I think the last song I ever played with my brother, the last one I ever learned with him, was Red Sector A. I learned it just for fun when I was back visiting him in the mid-90s I think. Rush was just such a great band in so many ways, great guys, great role models, great musicians, great friends to each other. It's just amazing. and to think that playing drums was only one part of Neil peart's life! A tragic loss
Alex Lifeson is a massively underrated guitar player. Maybe Neil and Geddy made the germ of this song, but it wouldn't be what it was without the guitar line.
I am very saddened by the passing of Neil Peart! I never got a chance 2 experience Rush live & will have 2 carry that disappointment with me 4 rest of my life. Thank u Rush 4 the many years you've given us, God Bless U.
Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s as a rock fan, it is a sad sad day for me to say good-bye to Neil Peart. Thanks for the music, the inspiration and the memories.
Went to a Rush concert at Alphine Valley Wi. Best concert ever. When a band is this good! You don't need anyone to acknowledge it. There music speaks for themselves as well as there fan's. The had alot of high honors. Rush lives for ever. A great name is worth more then 💰 money. Rush lives forever.
RIP Neil Peart. Virtuoso drummer, lyricist and author. Thank you for 40 yrs of uncompromising pure Rush. Love, from Toronto YYZ (Seeing YYZ on their baggage meant they were coming home to us...)
I used to work for the airlines many many years ago and whenever a bag missed a flight it ended up getting a tag put on it that said RUSH and the 3 letter designator, basically meaning it was priority. I always thought that's where the song came from, a lost Rush bag with the tag RUSH-YYZ on it.
Even dubbing in album version ...the shots where Neil is playing, I can't see one flaw. His ability to nail it again and again, when have had past opportunity to see them live, it was always studio tight with live embellishments the bonus
3 master's at their craft. I don't believe there's been another band with 3 players truly at "the top of their game" like RUSH. And I believe their compatriots in other bands would agree. I mean, Geddy on bass in just incredible. Alex gets lost sometimes because there's so many great, flamboyant, lead players, but he's right up there with them. And Neil, well there's really not many drummer's you could put above him, especially taking into account the guys writes the damm lyrics too !!!!! I mean, what other bands have their drummer play 15 minute solo's at every concert ??? NONE. Because to keep an audience entertained with a 15 minute drum solo it HAS to be UNBELIEVABLE and have the crowd on edge dying to hear what's next. Only Neil could do that. The only thing greater than his playing was his "composing". The guy truly was the GOAT taking into account: playing, composing, and writing.
How could anyone not love this song?! How could anyone not love RUSH?! I worked at that airport as IT Support for 17 years. Saw several celebs passing through. Never saw them. Good thing! I'd have been screaming like one of those girls back in the early Beatles days!
I've tried playing this song in practices with my band. There's not a lot of songs that I literally can not play or even fake, but this is one of them.
First off I LOVE tis song. Second is it just me or am I the only one that wants an all insturmental album from these guys. (Not that I hate Geddy's singing or Neil's lyrics) and lastly in any other band Alex Lifeson would be THE star. Jut goes to show you how much freaking talent just oozes from these guys. Concrats on the HoF Alex, Geddy, & Neil!!! Well deserved & LONG overdue!
I remember flying from Columbus Ohio to Toronto. When we landed, which you do when you fly, I remember getting my luggage and seeing the baggage ticket with the Toronto call letters YYZ. It put a smile on my face because for years I couldn't figure out the reason to call a song "YYZ". For a while I thought it was the letters you see on a lot of zipper pulls. Upon further inspection the letters on a zipper pull are YKK. Hope you enjoyed my story!!
When it came out I had a mate who had lived in Canada for about 5 years and thus he knew why it was called YYZ. Boy did we think we were cool for knowing that!
Almost same thing happened to me 20+ years ago, a co-worker came back from Toronto with his luggage in our office...YYZ tags still on them as the origin airport...it was like a Divine Revelation...long before you could look that shit up on Google....had another Divine Revelation when I went to Toronto and wound up on the corner of Danforth and Pape...like I crossed into another dimension.
When first heard YYZ in 1981/82, first reaction was--"WOW! Who're these guys?!" Had heard "Freewill" on the radio but just thought that was a cool song. First chance I had, purchased "Moving Pictures" on cassette!(Remember Those?!). Played the cassette, and that song until practically wore the tape out! IMHO, YYZ is the most musically complex, and relaxing, pieces of music by ANY group, be it Trio, Quad, Quint, Octet, 10 or 12pc group! One of my first music group T-shirts was Rush 3/4 sleeve......
In 1984 my best friend recorded Moving Pictures and Signals onto a cassette tape for me. I was hooked. Wore that tape out and kept it for years after even though it no longer played. Rush has been a part of my life since that time.
Neil Peart is a genius his percussion playing the lyrics in there songs the stories he tells the way that man speaks utterly genius there will never be another Neil Peart !!!!!!! Long Live Rush and their music the greatest rock band ever !!!!!!
It's funny; when I started playing drums in the 80's, I considered Tom Sawyer as my pinnacle. Now that I've been playing bass for a year, YYZ is my goal. Maybe when I'm 70, I'll get to find a Lifeson song to reach for.
Three Canadian lads, who just happen to be Canadian (eh!), and are all master class musicians. I was fortunate enough recently, to meet Alex Lifeson, at a Gibson Custom guitar seminar
@zalewskimm Yes he plays, and just returned from Milan, Italy. I can't name him here if then others would know who I am, I used to play guitar tours all over the world, then I got death threats in 2011 to 2014, those people murdered my dad in 2014, I am anonymous online anymore.
So happy I put up the big bucks to see rush when I still had a chance. There has never been and will never be another group like them. How do I know? Simple...nobody's even trying. R.i.p. neil
Love to hear Rush interviews, all three of them are intelligent, down to earth, and all have a passion for what they do. that is the secret of being a great band!!!
Guys, any true musician will tell you that recreating a piece such as this with every note, cymbal crash, base lick in the exact same location as it was recorded is nearly impossible. This piece, while having basic structure and tonality, has a very fluid feel as if being improvised on the spot. That's because I can assure you that no two times have ever been identical. So expecting the musicians to line up exactly with the piece recorded 5 decades ago is just not practical. The tittle is "Rush-The Making of YYZ". Not the performance of. This is about how the song originated and was developed back THEN. Seems only right to me that they play the song as it was recorded back then. Them jamming to the song from the track is just a bonus. I doubt they think that Rush fans are going to be so naive as to think they're actually playing this piece for the documentary. Love Rush for who they are and were and will be. At least they're true musicians. No AutoTune with these guys. Rush is and will always be, just amazing.
That's why these guys are my #1 influence. They created music that nobody can copy. They themselves can't even copy. It flows like energy and you just have to be able to flow with it. I still haven't seen anyone like them on the scene. Maybe never will.
Saw Rush do this song live 40 years ago during their “ Signals “ tour. Alex was incredible, blistering out the amazing YYZ as Neil hammered away on the drums. And they performed every song from “ Moving Pictures. “ An excellent show from the greatest trio band ever.
FINALLY a television producer and engineer that understand how to use correct camera shots to convey a live song. Great job. (even if they use an overdub track for the music) ;-)

Although I had no say in the matter, I'm glad that I've been alive during this specific time in history. We, people, have been blessed with some really great music to listen to. I could've been born 2 million years ago and all I would've had is some guy playing a rock with a bone for a drumstick.
DAN MIDKIFF and you would’ve said he was the greatest rock with a bone player in history. It’s all the same concept.
Earth is 10k years old.
Not millions
@@bryanfrombuffalo7685 you knew that, and I don't give a fuck. So, what's your point, bumpy?
It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on Earth
has ever produced the phrase, ‘as pretty as an airport.’-Douglas Adams.
"I was flying the plane at the time" lmao, genius, brilliant Alex.
pilotpilot alex has a pilot lincense
***** U bet - and when I learned my first thought was 'Brilliant.' Something I both have the means and ability to do - on my bucket list. XD
CV That got me laughing as well
So casually spoken
@@hermanhelmich Like... of course I was flying the plane Alex is just a treasure.
YYZ - " The call home" - RIP Professor Peart
R.I.P Neil Peart :(
A Farewell to Kings
Well I'm just proud of the fact that these guys did not get caught up in all the drugs and drinking that goes along with being in a rock band. They are very good role models for up and coming bands and groups. The dedication and love for life and music and people make for good song writers.
Isn't tea a drug? LOL
I mean they still did a lot of drugs, they just didn’t let it define them or take control of their lives
It's called "dedication" to their craft as "true" musicians, something rarely seen in our current time!!!!
RUSH GOAT.
@blake. They definitely did. Have you even listened to 2112. They were on LSD for alot of it. It doesn't take away from their creativity but it sure did help it.
"Laughed at by time, tricked by circumstances..." Thank you for all the licks, introspection, and inspiration. Rest in peace, Neil.
R.I.P. Professor!
Rush retiring was very sad for me, because you know they wont milk the comeback tours like other bands. Not their style.
They’ll have a reunion tour. I can feel it! Plus, what idiot would want to let go of the greatest fan base in the history of rock? Rush are smart enough to make that decision.
Edit: We all know that can never happen now, sorry for my bad prediction guys :(
There will be reunion tours but it will mostly be for the love of music and playing together for their fans than it will for the money. Which is the way it should be. RUSH FOREVER
lachazaroony ; I know what you mean - been a fan since their first album.
I dont think there will be. Neil has really bad tendonitis
Slick muck love of music? you're kidding right? Love of music is whatever ticket prices were before the 475.00 A TICKET on this FINAL tour, over double what the previous tour was...JMO :) saw 4x and im.not that old.
Watching Neil play is like being in a trance for me. He is a master of the drums.
Neil, though you have not been 'present' in 4 years, news of your passing brings great emptiness. Thank god for CZcams and Rush's excellent commitment to quality DVDs / Rockumentaries over the years. RIP Professor
Especially poignant today as Neil has returned home.
Gone, never to be forgotten. A true legend
“Each is us, a cell of awareness, imperfect and incomplete. Genetic blends, with uncertain ends, on a fortune hunt that’s far too fleet... “
Title : “Free Will”
Album : Permanent Waves
Year: 1980
As I get older now 62 I realize this band has been with me all my life may god bless these 3 and their talent that inspired me to play
Out of all the basses Geddy has played it on, I love hearing YYZ played on the WAL bass the most.
I’m starting a Rush tribute band but everyone’s afraid to join
Not me dude I can impersonate Neil quite well..where do I sign?
vinny my band plays a shit ton of rush and it’s v fun
As they should be
That’s great!
If I could do it all over again I'd chance 2 things: I'd have more patience with those who love me and I'd go to more Rush concerts.
@VoodooCrab, if I could do it all over again I'd be Geddy Lee.
"You are once again surrounded by a brilliant white light"
Geddy Lee - Extraordinary Gentleman
RIP Neil Peart😪one of if not the best drummer ever
Alex Lifeson is a massively underrated guitar player. Maybe Neil and Geddy made the germ of this song, but it wouldn't be what it was without the guitar line.
You’re right but the great thing is that Neil and Geddy thought exactly the same. They never needed to be reminded just how much Alex brought to Rush.
Hard to believe we're having no more Rush around. Assume I'm a big time Rush fan, since I just can't get enough of them
I am very saddened by the passing of Neil Peart!
I like to imagine this song is always playing in the background at the Toronto airport.
MY GOD THAT WAS SO SATISFYING. Rest in beautiful peace professor. You are so missed. ❤️🇨🇦❤️
Great guy, no more pain
They're so relaxed! It's incredibly complex stuff, but they're so chill about it. Complete mastery of their instruments.
for all you young ones out there , this is real music with real instraments .
The guy truly was the GOAT taking into account:
playing, composing, and writing.
As a pilot and a rush fan, the story behind YYZ it’s mind blowing
The sticks have gone silent. I never imagined that happening. Very sad.
Permanently, as of today. RIP Neil Peart 😞
@@ssmanning :(
Why Rush is so great? Cause a masterpiece like YYZ is only their second best instrumental
EK2112 La Villa Strangiato #1?
@@TimothyReeves la villa strangiato is my absolute n1 instrumental of all time, any band.
La villa at no.1 and at no. 3... Well, it's best we "leave that thing alone."
Not only that, but they recorded Lavilla in one take. That's nuts.
The live version with the drum solo on Exit...Stage Left is insanely good. My 10 year old son and I rock out to that in the car all the time.
FYI: This instrumental was NOT meant to be played at a low volume!!
How could anyone not love this song?! How could anyone not love RUSH?!
I worked at that airport as IT Support for 17 years. Saw several celebs passing through. Never saw them. Good thing! I'd have been screaming like one of those girls back in the early Beatles days!
Best damn band ever !
Great Storytelling, Great Song, The Best Muscians. Thank You For Your Music. The Soundtrack Of My Life.
I've tried playing this song in practices with my band. There's not a lot of songs that I literally can not play or even fake, but this is one of them.
As I’ve said before a thousand times they are all three the best at what they do.
First off I LOVE tis song. Second is it just me or am I the only one that wants an all insturmental album from these guys. (Not that I hate Geddy's singing or Neil's lyrics)
and lastly in any other band Alex Lifeson would be THE star. Jut goes to show you how much freaking talent just oozes from these guys.
Concrats on the HoF Alex, Geddy, & Neil!!! Well deserved & LONG overdue!
So glad Neil lived long enough to see it and participate in the event, and so much more until
The end. 🙏🥁😇🎶
YKK
When it came out I had a mate who had lived in Canada for about 5 years and thus he knew why it was called YYZ. Boy did we think we were cool for knowing that!
oddly - YKK is also a Canadian company! ;)
hated ur story only cuz of u feeling the need to put "which you do when you fly"
It's A Snider
La villa strangiato
Have fun!
Three Canadian lads, who just happen to be Canadian (eh!), and are all master class musicians.
I was fortunate enough recently, to meet Alex Lifeson, at a Gibson Custom guitar seminar
Peart should have been an fm radio announcer. He has an amazing deep soothing voice.
Cannot watch anything with Neil without getting sad. So glad we were able to experience someone like him, but still can't help but miss him....
YYZ is absolutely a masterpiece, my brother learned to play it on the drums when he was 11, one of the first songs he ever played.
@zalewskimm Yes he plays, and just returned from Milan, Italy. I can't name him here if then others would know who I am, I used to play guitar tours all over the world, then I got death threats in 2011 to 2014, those people murdered my dad in 2014, I am anonymous online anymore.
Its a masterpiece. One of many by this amazing trio.
Magic happens when three friends decide to come home 🔥❤️👑
So happy I put up the big bucks to see rush when I still had a chance. There has never been and will never be another group like them. How do I know? Simple...nobody's even trying.
R.i.p. neil
Simply one of the greatest compositions of stylized rock...Wow.....!!
Bah! I saw this live, 4-5 times. Hell, 3 times in 3 days over a long weekend in Dallas. Of course, it was a "few" years ago (c1983), but hey... :)
Love to hear Rush interviews, all three of them are intelligent, down to earth, and all have a passion for what they do. that is the secret of being a great band!!!
The greatest Band of musicians of all time :)
"I was actually flying the plane at the time"
Nice flex Alex 🤣
Actually, they played it exactly the same night after night. Note for note.
Saw Rush do this song live 40 years ago during their “ Signals “ tour. Alex was incredible, blistering out the amazing YYZ as Neil hammered away on the drums. And they performed every song from “ Moving Pictures. “ An excellent show from the greatest trio band ever.
All 3 of them are absolutely AWESOME! ! I been a true fan of rush from the very beginning! They really are great musicians!
FINALLY a television producer and engineer that understand how to use correct camera shots to convey a live song. Great job. (even if they use an overdub track for the music) ;-)
Mother Shipton or at least a good video editor
I could literally listen to Neil talk forever. And I have only said that about 2 other people.
Thank you for doing these videos Neil. Amazing man and musician. Memory will live on forever.
I have been hearing their music for about 40yrs now and have had the privilege of watching them in concerts almost 10 times ... they never ever disappoint and are always phenomenal !!!!
The all time best Rock instrumental, by the all time best power band.
Rip Neil Peart
This song actually got me through the beginning of my middle life crisis....I bought a kit and started playing after 35 years! We covered 2112 back then. Thanks Neil, you were always my fav!
Music has changed a lot over the years. I'm so glad I grew up listening to RUSH. Saw them 6 times live. Unless you saw Neil live and up close, you didn't see the best of him. Absolutely the best I've ever seen. RIP.
