  • Another gratuitous use of technology: an Allen-Bradley SLC500 PLC (5/05 processor) used to control the temperature of a toaster oven. This "manual mode" demonstration shows how pulse-width modulation (PWM) is used to throttle energy to the toaster oven, using a discrete output on the PLC.
Later, we will program the HMI panel to communicate with the PLC to show temperature and output variables, allowing us to do more formal PID tuning for optimum control.

You are a good instructor. This video is better than any text book i have ever read about PID and PLCs

Yes, we use a timer instruction and a "Greater-Than" comparison instruction to determine when the discrete output bit turns on and off, according to the percentage output value coming from the PID instruction.

I use a similar control technique for my homemade reflow oven. Controller built by "Silicon Horizon". Love the vids.

Hay tony, would this a basic demonstration of time proportioning control of the heating element in the toaster oven to keep the process variable at the right temp instead of overshooting.

Hi there, great explanation, Can you show which digital output bit are you using to fired SSR? from the Flags Bit? or you write a new rung?

Hi, I'm new at this and I want to use a PID instruction. I would like to ask you a question about how you're turning the output ON/OFF. Do you have a separate rung that calculates the percentage duty cycle required and cycles the output via a timer accordingly, or something like that? Thanks in advance if you're able to answer my question.

I need to create this same function with the output being turned on and off to regulate temperature in a large hot water heater. Could you create a video on the ladder logic starting at rung 0? Maybe even supply me with the .rss file? I know that might be a long shot, but any direction would be appreciated.

Is there a way you could post the .rss file for this? I would like to learn more.

do you have a video where detail the pid programming? i have a problem with mi pid...when i reach the set point value my process variable always is at 100%. i will explain what i want to do. i have a conveyor with weight measure...i put a set point...1.5 tons....my process variable starts to change and reach at 100%...but i think that is incorrect because always stay at the same speed value. please help me...i think the problem is in the scaled

Isn't PLC a bit overkill for this? Some pid controller like Rex will fit better.
