Another diffuser idea is if you have a junk tv laying around you can take it apart and there are several sheets of light diffusing thin plastic inside. It works great.
I think this is the perfect solution to lighting up my workbench area more.
Got to watch more videos of the leds in action during gaming/watching movies. Never knew that was a thing.

I bought similar channels at home depot about 2 years ago, they work great you just need to clean them well, I placed them facing up on my wall since I didn't want the led's to show {no diffuser} and it worked great.
Now that you tried the paper as a diffuser I'm thinking about other areas in my place.

I think at home depot they were like 13 dollars for the 8 foot section. Not horrible but still would add up if your getting a lot of them!

And since I believe they mostly only sell their products in the US, its a bummer for other regions not to have them as an option. But good thing there is usually ways to go about making things yourself!
I subscribed a few months ago and your videos keep keep me coming back. Love your mention of RGBW, they've been out for a while now, but few folks know about them or use them. Also very ingenious to use addressable LEDs to build your custom lighting schemas, additionally, you're using an ESP32 to accomplish this affordably also giving you the option to wirelessly make changes to your light configs or sync the lights up to the smart home. This is neat! I've been wanting to put lights in my office area for awhile now but hadn't settled on exactly how I wanted to do it, especially because I wanted the strips to double as a goal light when I watch hockey games. This is super useful and I'll definitely be watching a few more of your videos you linked!

The Muzata diffusers are great, but they're only 1m, so this is really useful when you don't want seams. Even if you had a seam in the aluminum channel, there's no seam in the diffuser, where it's most noticeable. Bravo!

I never imagined that paper could help make a decent diffuser, but I think that over time and depending on the humidity it could become damaged and would have to be replaced with some frequency. But it's something interesting to try, to start a project inspired by your work that you share in your channel.

I know a lot of paper you can buy now says like non yellowing so at least there is that but yeah, if you have this in a place where kids or pets could bump into it, I'd probably go with just a normal diffuser. So far they have been holding up perfectly but then again, its only been a couple weeks lol.

Another idea for the paper diffuser, instead of cutting a roll of paper use a roll of paper that is for calculators or even register tape.
Someone tested it? I think it didnt get over 70°C to get dark

@@jeremiahbullfrog9288 thanks for suggestion. Those arenât available in UK. Whatâs the need for non thermal please and whatâs the ideal width in comparison to channel? Is it an extra 10mm for the bend either side of channel?
Another great option could be paper drywall tape. Itâs thicker so may diffuse too much, but a 75â roll is $2-3.

really interesting low cost idea. I just put on my aluminum framing and stick some LED stripe in it,
ended up not super stoked about the "spots", especially when my strip density is rather low.
remembered I seen this video of yours so trying it out with photocopy paper first - the diffusing effect works, just the fibre of the paper is visible. I might have to try different types of paper, or see if there's cheap white plastic sheet instead.

have you ever done anything with thick perspex like the Muzata skirting board strip? where its edge lit from below but creates the neon look nicely - if so what perspex did /would you use? something clear but with a frosted surface? thanks!

Great vid and good idea for a deflector wouldn't really call it a diffuser as the aluminum has zero transmissivity but still a nice effect

thanks for taking the time to make this, I might do this myself cause I'm sure its much cheaper and I wont be wasting time returning bad diffusers to amazon. i will say its a bit hard to see how your diffuser work since you didn't use a solid color and had animations, itd be nice to just see solid colors thru the whole strip. I also have a question, with the ESP32, can you have it sync up with other wifi bulbs? i use sylvania wifi bulbs that are also on google home, it would be really cool to sync the led strips with it

I saw one of your vids and got inspired, bought all the stuff from your vid and been working on setting up home office. I finished painting and am thinking of setting up the muzata diffusers this weekend and I started thinking, do I need longer screws to get into studs? I saw somewhere that command strips are good? The tiny little screws that come with the Muzata clips work fine?

How about diy ambient Wled strip around the projector screen. That way it lights up what ever is on the edge of the screen.

what's the best way to run these led strips off a power bank/brick? or a small 12v battery? I'm going to be making similar lights with an on/off switch for an indoor storage unit where there's no power. Awesome video. It gave me a lot of ideas.

I've been using BTF Lighting LED's for a while and I would highly recommend them Even the double sided tape they use works well and stays stuck. Very good and well balanced LED's.

I have not analyzed things too much but I would imagine the BTF strips are better overall but I'm honestly not sure from a color perspective If I could tell any difference just by looking at them. BTF for sure has options with better Whites than the Govee but as far as just colors, its gotta be close.

Do you think it might work if I used a roll of bond paper typically used in old adding machines (printing calculators)?
There's a roll at Staples: Bond Paper Roll, 2 1/4" x 125', which is the exact same width you cut your paper to, and the whole 125 foot roll is just $1.29. My only concern is whether or not it will behave the same way as the paper in your video and manage to be stiff enough to stay in place in the channel without curling inward or something. I might have to go feel it in person soon, and maybe get a test roll

I've had a couple OG Adafruit 2.5 pitch 64x64.... It is clear some of the programs for the 2D matrices were designed for a 64x64!
As a video or 3 ideas worth, do you see yourself doing any 2D matrices with WLED anywhere in your house?

Itâs got a whopping 768 KB of on-chip SRAM as well as 8 K of very fast cache RAM for intensive operations.
But the part that I'm most interested in for this $24USD (estimated) isn't the 50 GPIO pins, or it's new USB OTG 2.0 Integration - it's the addition of on board hardware Pixel Processing Architecture (PPAi I believe is the official acronym) chip!

Thanks buddy! I was thinking about that! It wouldn't be perfect but I would probably just use a piece of poster board paper and cut it to size. Its a little bit thicker and more rigid so I think it would work pretty well. Could also probably 3d print something but I still have not gone down the 3d printing path yet!
Awesome video. Was the strip that you were using in the video the same width as the Govee m1. Would the 3/4 channel be to wide for one Govee m1 not allowing it to shine bright?
Thanks so much for watching and great question! The strip i'm using in the video is 10mm wide. The Govee M1 is 12mm wide. The 3/4 inch channel I used in this video would for sure be wide enough for 1 and look great but probably would not be able to fit 2 side by side.
How were the leds matching the images on the TV?
Is there a link showing how to integrate the colors with the screen as-in "dreamview mode"? I currently have Govee M1 and floorlamp but our tv is slightly too small to run the T-series backlighting with camera... I'm trying to do a work-around. Larger tv is not an option due to built-in cabinet dimensions.

Thanks again for the great question! It really just depends on the look your going for. Connecting them in parallel means that they will all do the exact same thing. Yeah buddy! I guess I never realized they are not nationwide! They are bigger than home depot and lowes so they generally have a bigger selection of things which is why I go there a lot. Never thought the older I get the more I would enjoy going to these type of stores lol.
@@ChrisMaherDIY You and me both man I never thought when I was younger there was any draw to those stores for me but over the last 15 years I've remodeled every house we've lived in in one way or another! That's at least three houses and then a friend's house that we stayed at as well
Can you also start using shrink wrap tubing for your wires or zip ties something to make them look more pro.
Hi Chris! Your video's have inspired me to try my hand at a project myself and i'm pretty happy with how it turned out!
I was wondering if you could consider doing a tutorial of sorts on the different lighting effects that you like to use. The most difficult part for me is to find good looking effects. There's so many that it takes a lot of time to see what looks good.

If you're using WLED, you can import/export the presets. So, if Chris is willing to share them, you can have the exact effects that you can see in his demos.
One thing to note is that effects don't translate well between different numbers of LEDs/m (what may look fantastic on strips of 60/m, may look subpar on 144/m for an example). This is especially true when it comes to advanced effects with multiple effects overlapping via segments.
Having a tutorial instead would definitely be just as helpful to many people and is a nice idea for a video, good suggestion!

I dont think they are on amazon yet but here it is form AliExpress: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DlWk90T Otherwise, you could always look into 3d printing at least the box part. I at some point want to get into 3d printing but just have not found the time yet!
Could you share what color pallette you use for your cyberpunk/synthwave presets? I can never quite get the colors right and yours look amazing.

Hey chris you can create more good looking nanoleaf by adding magnets and using small 4Ă4 led square matrix instead of strips in the you will be making exact product like nanoleaf like you did earlier in govee glide it will be more please consider it it will be great

I know some people use 3d printing to make something and others have recommended like a travel soap dish. Is that multiple esp32 boards running the floor lamps and media bench or do you run all 3 channels from one?

So I have a total of 4 esp devices. 1 is running the lamps (wired up in parallel) 1 is running the top diffuser, another the bottom diffuser and the 4th is the medial console. Hmm, would 3D printing a U channel also be a good idea to make this work for even cheaper? To get 8 feet I'd need to glue a bunch of 250mm long pieces together but I think it might work as well and hopefully the seams where the pieces are glued together won't be visible.

Thanks so much for watching and good question! So the 2 floor lamps are doing the same thing at the same time since they are connected to the same controller with the data split (called running in parallel) However the 2 horizontal diffusers are connected to their own esp device. For everything I am just using the sync feature which is supposed to change all the effects/settings to the main one you are controlling. Now in my experience, when syncing this way, some animation/effects do seem to sync and do the same thing at the same time and then others, do not. I'm not sure why some do and some do not but If I truly did want them to do the exact same thing at the exact same time I would just connect them to one controller and split the data just like I did for the floor lamps. Hope that makes sense and I am horrible at putting together schemes so I don't have any of this written down!
