- Did you know that the festive greeting Io Saturnalia to the Romans was much like Merry Christmas, or Happy Holidays is to us today? This video is all about the earliest predecessor to Christmas, the Roman festival of Saturnalia.
The Ancient Roman Festival of Saturnalia began as a one-day festival in honor of the Roman god Saturn, but by the late Republic, it spanned over an entire week. The Saturnalia consisted of feasting, drinking, games and general merriment and was celebrated during the Winter Solstice. The strict social order of Roman society was not only loosened, but partially reversed with the slaves given more freedoms during this time, and their masters often wore the felt hat (pilleus) of the freed slave. The Saturnalia was the jolliest of all Roman festivals, and it was customary for everyone to greet each other with a hearty 'Io Saturnalia!' The connection with Sol Invictus and the importance of the Temple of Saturn in the Roman Forum will all be discussed in this video!

Really missing the Roman series..
Love your channel! It may be, however, that classicists, mythologists, and historians have misunderstood what the ancients were celebrating and remembering from prehistoric times!
SOL INVECTUS, HELIOS, CRONOS, even the Egyptian ATUM-RAH and the Sumerian AN, not to mention the Ugaritic & Hebrew EL/ELOHIM (& the "Sabbath" being "Saturn's Day" or "Saturday"...), It ALL may go back to a time of Paradise & The Golden Age, a time when Saturn's orbit was closer to earth, and the huge yellow light was seen night & day shining in the heavens, at the pole, and never setting!
SOL was NOT our Sun, but a planet! And this documentary uses plasma science and petroglyphs, art, texts, and comparative mythology, to PROVE and make sense of ancient messages, resulting rituals, various interpretations around the globe and established in various ways! ALL SEEN IN THE SKY! (Atlantis, Eden, the Great Wheel, the Great Bull of Heaven...) Explaining so much! And the Saturnalia, a return to better times, before Saturn "fell" and went far away.

Because WHY would a wandering star now a speck in the sky, earn such a mighty reputation, but also earnest fear? A GOD.
Why was Venus/Aphrodite/ Ishtar, so many names, around the globe, a starlike feminine power? And Mars, the warrior hero, fighting serpents, snakes, dragons and plasma discharge monsters "fighting" in the sky, with his cosmic sword, weapon, even a sacred plasma mountain, or tongue, reaching to the earth?
How do we explain these common human symbols? And the origins of rituals, festivals, and religions? Just a Winter Solstice?

I enjoy Saturnilia, although the dates have been organized by a local comitte called the festive committee of the cologne carnival in 1823. We still have women come around and cut off the ties of men trying to work during these days and also a bonfire marks the last day where the chruch comes in and tries to stamp out all the pagan activity but we deceive the church and burn an effigee.
