I suffer from 30% hearing loss in both my ears and have dealt with struggling with conversations for a long time. I’ve now been using AirPod pro’s for around 3 months now, predominantly in the workplace environment and can honestly say they have been a revelation. I just couldn’t accept paying upwards of $2 - 3,000 per ear for hearing aids knowing this tech was just round the corner. I’m glad I waited. Cons (not really cons when you look at the overall savings and benefits) are start alerting they are running out of charge around the 4-5hr mark but I generally stick them back in their case at lunch time. The case acts as a mobile charging station so by the time you get back from lunch you are good to go again. I just stick the case with the pods on charge at night like I do my phone. Another thing that might concern some is the need to purchase an apple phone or tablet to set the AirPods up correctly. You can get a relatively lowly spec iPad for very cheap nowadays brand new. You just have to make sure it can be updated to the latest iOS software. Another pro is you’ve now got a pretty cool tablet as well. All this is still magnitudes cheaper that pretty low spec hearing aids - you know, the kind you have to put batteries in and cant listen to music through or are noise cancelling for example. It’s a no-brainer 😉

Thank you for your feedback. I have been using Bose Hearphones (now a canceled product) in noisy situations - and they do a good job at it, but I really need something more of daily use -- Your feedback is giving me the confidence to move forward with these -- I might actually wait since Apple is expected to announce the release of the next generation of these any day now.

If you have an audiogram from an audiologist, you dont need the mimi hearing test app. You can enter the audiogram data in the iphone settings under accessibility/Audio-Visual/headphone accommodations/custom audio setup. You can enter the data manually or take a picture of the audiogram.

It’s worth pointing out that with iOS 15 (and a firmware update to the AirPods Pro themselves) they will get a feature called “conversation boost” to help hear in noisy environments. Also you will be able to import the paper or pdf audiogram from a real professionally performed hearing test instead of relying on a 3rd party app like the Mimi hearing test app.
I hope you revisit this and make a “part 2” in the fall. Excellent video.

That’s good to hear. I have been using AirPod pro as hearing aids for a month or so. Today I got my first hearing aids. Phonak Audeo Paradise P90-R.
The sound quality of the AirPod is far superior to the P90’s. It’s like the use tiny blown tweeters in these real hearing aids... Is this normal?
Been using the P90 for about 7 hours now and am wondering if I just wasted $6,000+ 😢

I wish it could interpret the Bluetooth signals output and amplify according to your program but it only does that for external sound.

Have you thought about testing the Apple Airpods Pro 2, which came out in September of last year? These have a more advanced processor and greatly improved noise reduction, which may bridge some of the shortcomings of the original Airpods Pro's. I would like to know what your thoughts are on the latest model airpods as hearing aids. Thank you!

Not to mention that they make music and speech that streams from Apple devices sound wonderful. I've started to experiment with connecting to my Apple TV and turning off CC. My results are preliminary and I'm sure I will still need to turn CC on sometimes, but there is a definite improvement with my mild to moderate upper end hearing loss (with 100% word recognition). I find myself once again listening to music for the sake of listening, and not as a background distraction. I haven't done much of that since back in the day. Way back. :-) Thanks for your review and for confirming what I suspected.

One note on the cost aspect: the batteries inside the Airpods are not user replaceable, so after two years of intense daily use, your battery life is going to be very short, while traditional hearing aids would hold up far better, especially if you get ones with replacable batteries. Say you're using the Airpods for two years before you need to get new ones while you can use hearing aids for five. That difference in life span and e-waste is pretty significant!

Rechargeable hearing aids have the same battery degradation issue in my experience. I got a pair of Resound Lynx Quattro 961 DRWC in December 2019. At the start they lasted all day, I would say 18 hours or more even with a lot of streaming. I did a huge amount of streaming during 2020 and 2021 and they continued to last all day. Suddenly in March 2022 the battery life took a sharp downturn. I noticed when they would signal low battery in the middle of the evening. Now in mid April I put them on fully charged and they last maybe 6 hours. I have to do quick charges several times a day now. I could buy 20 pairs of Airpods Pro for the price of my hearing aids. So the cost of buying several Airpods Pro and replacing them every couple of years is still far less. Maybe something to consider if your hearing loss is mild to moderate. Unfortunately my hearing loss is profound, so Airpods Pro are not an option for me.

You didn’t mention the “Live hearing” feature which I found useful for tv. This entails setting the phone near the tv while you can be quite far away with tv volume fairly low and hear clearly. Although, it would be difficult to have a conversation with another person as air pro is only amplifying the tv.

This is mindblowing to me. I'm deaf in my right ear and partially moderately to almost severe loss in my left ear. I can hear well in my left ear and I can almost hear nothing in my right. I can feel the vibrations in my right ear but I can't really decipher what that sound is or was. My left ear is capable and I lip read a lot so that helps as well. I do wear a hearing aide though which I got thru a licensed audiologist. It's almost a decade old and the newest model of hearing aids on the market today has Bluetooth capabilities to connect to smartphones and whatnot. The prices are thru the roof. I've been wearing earbuds which are okay. But what this AirPod Pro can do is just blowing my mind. I will look into getting myself a pair of AirPod Pro today. I'm leaving to go out of town for my daughter's graduation this Friday. Thanks for everything.

Just wish to offer some user feedback for anyone who, like me, has a typical age-related high frequency hearing loss at the worse end of moderate. With great anticipation I purchased airpods pro second generation along with an iphone a few days ago (still much cheaper than hearing aids!) and have been testing out the hearing aid capabilities for a few days now. To put it simply, the airpods pro do not offer anywhere near enough amplification for my level of hearing loss unfortunately, even when set to maximum. Still, it is wonderful technology and I will certainly monitor future advances. For anyone with a mild hearing loss however, I believe they might be quite helpful. Battery life is of course another major problem and this needs to be significantly improved. For the time being, I have reverted to using my Etymotic analogue hearing amplifiers which offer slightly more amplification and have batteries that last about a week.

Great review Cliff. We'll be waiting for the follow up when Apple introduces direct audiogram input for Apple Health (allows taking a picture of an audiogram and verifying the thresholds), the new Tinnitus masking feature, and Conversation Boost (beamforming directional mics). That last feature should address your concerns about AirPods potentially being a net negative in noise

Doctor Cliff, great video. Listened with my APP. I had high hopes for the Airpod doing good. NOT replacing my Starkey's though. I knew that sound production/quality may be better on Airpods though because of their main purpose. Quality music listening. I enjoy listening to the TV with the pods and in some group discussion situations the live listen rocks, with transparency sometimes turned off, is reproducing voices better than my aids. So pursuing Live listen with the pods is well worth trying.

My Opticon hearing aids had to go into the shop to get fixed and I’ve tried to use the AirPod Pro and iOS 15. Like Dr. Clifford said it was not up to spec for someone with a moderate hearing loss for it was very weak in my experience.
Also setting up the hearing aids can be difficult for someone with a moderate hearing loss for the Mimi app said that It could not measure my hearing loss and ended up using another app where I could enter in my hearing chart from my hearing aid vendor. Even with all the tweaking it’s still so far below my hearing aids performance.
One of the things that was not addressed was that wind noise when running was an issue for me for it made it almost unusable and annoying when I was doing my usual Tuesday running group run.
I turned them back in after two days for it was not a real alternate for me

That is an excellent review of the AirPods Pro.
My recent hearing aid experience has been very favorable. All my hearing aids have had real ear measurements. Signia Charge&Go was just ok, streaming really didn’t sound that good to me. I was issued Phonak M90 by the VA when they first came out & they are good, I hear well and the streaming is pretty good. When Paradise became available I acquired a pair of P90, not much of an improvement over the Marvels but the ability to connect to different devices easily is a definite improvement. Now using M90 as a spare.
AirPods Pro I purchased shortly after they were available, programmed with Mimi. In most situations they are amazingly good. Put them on 1st thing in the AM hit the treadmill & mute the treadmill noise while listening to the radio. Usually continue wearing them until noon when it’s time for a recharge.

I have just started using Airpods Pro and notice a time delay between the audio I hear without the air-pods and with the air-pods. That makes the sound echo, like in a big room. Does Apple do this deliberately to reduce oscillation? Certainly such devices should be able to reproduce sounds "instantaneously" to our ears it desired. Wired earphones have no such echo. Any Thoughts? Is there something I'm missing?

I don’t totally agree in that I have been using hearing aids for about 16 years and the Apple pros for a couple. We are an Apple extend family with just about every Apple device in use. And these AirPods, in my opinion, don’t even come close to serving as hearing aids. The minuscule battery life alone is enough to disqualify them. I never run out of charge with my Resound rechargeable aids. Easily run 17 hrs a day with a lot of streaming from my iPhone 13. I use the pods for music and to listen to videos on my iMac so the rest of the house doesn’t hear them. No matter what size earpiece I find they easily fall out. I guess if you can’t afford real aids they would be better than nothing.

Should I be looking at something like Costco Kirkland at $1,400? Something like Apple AirPods at $250? Or something like the online hearing aid services? I have 2 pair AirPods pro and I notice if there is silence and low noise, my Airpods go to idle, and when people start talking it takes 1-2 seconfor that it would to go to transparency mode 100%. In other words, a noise outside activates the transparency mode in full. So I miss the start, a few words from a speaking person.

I've heard comments about the air pod pros sounding better than hearing aids. I am trying my air pods with ios 15.1 and have no experience with hearing aids. I've found the sound is very artificial, tinny and having an echo type character to the sound. Not having any hearing experience I'm very reluctant to try them if the sound of my own voice and outside sounds are going have this amplified echo prone sound that I'm not liking with air pod pros. I even tried a set of Nuheara IQ buds 2 with the same result. In fact I have to say the air pod pros are a bit better than Nuheara buds I have not found the air pod pros to help much with speech understanding, especially softer sounds from my wife, lol. But I can watch TV with less volume but there's a limit to understand improvement and so still us CC. I'm tried multiple settings and tweaking but just don't find the air pod pros to be much of an advantage. All the tests I've taken say I had a moderate hearing loss with more loss in the left ear than the right. I'm debating either trying Costco brand hearing aids or some from truhearing since I have a Medical Advantage benefit of $1500./pair for premium hearing aids. The truhearing aids have OVP which I think might be a big benefit because my own voice thru the air pod pros is not all that great and somewhat annoying. I'm on the fence about hearing aid obviously, but I do know I need some help. Additionally I would like to wear them riding my mtn bike because I just can't understand other riders out there while they all seem to understand each other easily. So whatever I get has to stay in my ear. The air pod pros will fall out easily without adding retention devices to them. Oh I have found that the best thing for TV listening for me has been a wireless headphone set...much better than the air pod pros.
