It’s not so much about the price of bikes and components, it’s more about value for money. And the bike industry is quite simply taking the piss when it comes to value.
When is this industry going to realise that charging £600 for a fork is not budget and is not value for money. These are still way above what a lot of people can afford. The margin on these forks must be massive. The problem with Mountain Bike consumers is that we have all become brainwashed by these mega high prices and we are not seeing the woods for the trees! Please supply bikes and components that are actually affordable and represent great value.
only in Mountain Bike is a $500 fork considered a budget buy! Good gravy, my first real mountain bike only cost me $700 back in 1993. I used to get crap for whitewater kayaking, and how expensive it is, but it isn't even half what mountain biking is.
Why buy anything other than a Z2 Bomber at that price point?
@@dougnico2492 i got my z2 bomber for 300. jenson is a great online shop.
This isn’t 1993
@@hc3820 We Know Smartass. Adjusted to Inflation is $1300. Goodluck finding a Decent Squish bike at that.
@@lossantoscity3249 you’re telling me the bike he had in ‘93 was a ‘decent squish’?
Got back into mtbing last year with a mountain bike shaped object ...realised i loved being on a bike again after a 35 year break ..so started looking for a real mtb late last year decided i wanted an Orbea Laufey H10 (2023) price E2150 delivered so i started saving looked again online in Feb and low and behold the same bike E1250 delivered so now i have my laufey plus 900 euro for upgrades I'm happy with a 2023 model def the best bike i've ever owned and sexy to look at as well 😍
the laufey is a beautiful bike, good choice.
Do a co-lab with Doddy... He is there too!
The simplest tip when on a budget is brows the internet. For an example, for the price of that Psylo I recently got an Pike Ultimate. Tons of great deals across European online stores.
We need both ends of the price spectrum. Plenty of people have the money and want to drop it on their hobby. But also need options for people who want something dramatically cheaper
I think the main issue I see with prices is that people create demand for high spec bikes that you only see being riden on fire roads with full face kit etc. which scares away new riders because they think they need that same bike and kit to get started. Or at least thats what I see and hear here in southern California. I always tell people a modern hardtail is more than enough to start hell even a gravel bike will do. The last full sus i bought was second hand and fully loaded without a scratch because the guy was too scared to ride single track..
The main problem with prices is that people who have more money than sense think that 4/5k on a full suspension bike is classed as budget, and 7/8k for a carbon one is value for money and then continue to buy them at these ridiculous prices.. Plus the constant push on carbon bikes doesn't help matters either...The cost of some bike parts are way too expensive as well. (Shocks)
mountain biking is becoming a luxury sport. not so accessible anymore with high prices.
People lie about wanting cheaper bike parts because none of us need XTR or XX1 yet they sell a ton of them. People actually want the bling parts to be affordable. GX and SLX offer all of the performance you need, but we (me too) buy the stuff we crave but don't need. I buy used stuff all the time in perfect shape people sell for pennies because they needlessly upgraded. I do this too I'm just honest about it.
I have a bike with Deore, and one with XTR, the difference is negligible when riding.
The lower end CUES stuff is an awesome deal for new riders. I don't know about the 1x8 stuff, but the 1x9 works pretty well for something that rivals microSHIFT in price (at least where I live). And the mix and match is definitely nice (got the U6000 front chainring and crank arms because the chainring is replaceable, and complete U4000 rear, works flawlessly)
Martyn - "I have 1 bike" completely disowning the Random Tandem.
I didn't see the poll but chalk up another vote for "2 bikes." Aggressive Trail Hardtail and a Fixed Commuter. 2022 Commencal Meta HT and a 2009-ish Steel Swobo Sanchez.
Anybody else riding fixed gears around here(s)? I dig it as a challenging and more engaging way to do the commuter thing.
Shhhh 😂
Hounds and Beagles: Still yet to see a beagle. But then I’m still yet to see mine in the same frame, even on the same trail, as my bike. She always sees me back at the car though.
I love “Hounds and Beagles” 🐕🐾
I have a 27.5 modern bike, a GT LTS 3 retro mod bike running marzocchi bombers (it's been on the tech show years ago) and my adaptive trike for when my balance is completely off (I have MS and sometimes 2 wheels ain't good for me).
There is no end of season here in Australia, so we get to ride all year. However, does mean there's no end of season sales.
Love getting the pups on the show 👍👍
My argument on the prices of components have always been they’re entirely too expensive because they’re catering to the sponsored racers. Because of that they cater to the enthusiasts with deep pockets. I mean, why not make great products that are of excellent quality that don’t have to be high end but comparable?
Kind of missing the point, if you ask me. Entry level gear is being out on mid tier bikes, mid tier gear bikes now costs high end prices. Introduce even more entry level stuff will not solve the issue. It will just hike up prices of the enty/mid/value segment
Thinking about the complicated routing for the cable on some full suspension bikes, electronic shifting is possibly a must 🧐 cables seem to lag due to binding which causes inconsistent shifts!
We want: Upside down forks. Gearbox bikes and lower maintenance and easier maintenance component design.
😅 You guys crack me up! Hopefully see you in Bentonville for bike festival 🧐
#captioncontest Owen’s effort to sneak onto the Dirt Shed Show disguised as a poodle for the Hounds and Beagles segment was doomed to failure.
Really happy that brands are investing in great lower end bike kit as it’s fine for us normal folk . I just hope it’s reliable , I don’t care if it’s heavy , I’m not racing . I also don’t mind high end kit , if that’s your thing then go for it .
Where can I find the guidelines for submitting a photo to the Bike Vault?
I have written the title and description, but after adding the photo and clicking the button I can only see the bike animation. No matter how long I wait, I don't see any confirmation that the upload was successful. Maybe my picture is too big?
cable actuated are robust and reliable.
#captioncontest. "Beaker joins the GMBN presenter staff"
You read my mind
#Captioncontest Owen found his GMBN hoodie useful to hide his new haircut.
hounds and beagles?? you mean trail side roadkill
I love the live bike vault!! Hoping more of this when you guys are out on the trails!
After my last trip to the bikepark I felt it is the opposite, there was almost only high end gear on all the bikes I’ve seen in the lift queue and some guys were literally joking on one of their mates because he had “only”
a RS Domain fork on his Commencal Clash. But same dude had shimano XTR breaks lol. I guess everybody likes the high end stuff but not wanting to pay the crazy prices
Building a second bike, bc Niner deal is so sweet. And better HT interface, and rear TA. Gonna shave the cable mounts and drill for IR. Shimano drivetrain and brakes. And ahead of you, on the shifting.
A very good topic tbf, how expensive mtb has become when wages us mere mortals earn are shite, cost of living is extreme too. Technology has advanced too fast for the general Consumer market.
I like Hounds & Beagles, disappointed that there was no beagles though.
I don't think we need new down spec-ed stuff at lower prices. We need the current products to be sold at more reasonable prices.
save money? I converted a used 2020 Rockshox Revelation, into a Pike Ultimate (RC2 damper) by swapping out the internals, for half the price of a new Pike Ultimate....just had to spin the wrenches myself.
Great show lads
There has always been high value, budget components available on the market. Now you can get high value, budget and with high end component stickers on them. Perfect for those who are really tight fisted, but want to be snobs at the same time. Marketting teams will be scrambling!
Can’t wait to go to sea otter tomorrow!!!
The bike industry seen an opportunity during COVID to maximise profits, and thought the good times are here, and continued to hike prices up.
People are slowly waking up and thinking do i need to spend thousands on over priced equipment and bicycles, hence why two companies have gone in a week and more will follow.
Really hope kona are okay 😢love there bikes
Same plus I need there life time warranty
Global Mountain Bike Network, I subscribed because your videos are super cool!
The Don carrying the channel again!😂🤙🏻
I still think the best budget fork deal is picking up someone’s new takeoff Recon RL Silver. 140-160mm of travel air fork with adjustment for ~150$ or less is super ideal for a budget build!
Happy the biking industry is starting to come down though. Remember yall having expensive stuff eventually means it will trickle down to us for cheap:) keep making great vids GMBN! We love em all even if we can’t afford it lol
Thanks for watching! And long live the trickle-down tech 🏆
My home! I just wish I could make it to the sea otter this year
eBike as a commuter and a normal HT MTB 😁
Can vouch for the Domain - awesome fork.
over 500 bucks for a fork is cheap?? wow, honestly i don't think so. Many many new riders have bikes that cost about 600-800. So the fork is almost as much as a complete bike. This ist still way too high for entry level
I have a status and a levo sl.. the ebike is better imo🤷♂️
Def hard to beat a Bomber Z1 Coil for $300 right now. I love mine! Apparently overpaid for it though, 2 years ago 😂. I just paid $150 in tools and parts to service it too…
That's because it's basically a fox and why I only buy rockshox now. Easy and cheap to service yourself.
Tip: Jenson is having a big sale on forks, 50% off or more on most forks.
I dont rly care bout retail price, when i can buy new Suntour Durolux under 230$…
I get that quality suspension is expensive. I just can't justify paying over 300eu for a fork. 1k+ frames the same. To me a good hardtail should be had
I've only ever had cables, so I want to say I don't need electric, but if they were was better and someone could convince me, and the cost was low enough to switch over then maybe.
No wonder bike shops are struggling to sell. I am dying to get a new basic gravel bike that was £450 less than two years ago. Now the same bike is being sold at around £1200 or £599 for just the bare frameset. The bike industry seems to have lost grip with reality. Like people said on the comments bellow, it looks like they are taking the piss.

disappointed the pyslo gold are not vintage psylo gold in colour
#captioncontest whilst Owen is away on holiday, the GMBN website needed updated presenter mugshots so the office staff found a suitable replacement for him
All latest videos are just adverts
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOGS and and hedges, bogs and hedges, bogs and hedges ... sorry wrong song 🤔 on other hand, those dogs might enjoy some of them.
Low end budget fork, that costs £600. Wow.
Hang on, the £ price figure is Higher number than $ price figure for those forks??!!! With even the terrible exchange rate for £ these days, the £ figure should be lower.... Rip off Britain again. 🤦♂️
The UK price likely includes VAT whereas the US price is before tax which varies state to state.
Mountain biking season?
See the nobly bits on your tires they are for riding when it’s nasty
I would like to say that this is something that I do, but I would be lying within reason
Please slow it down, it is not a competition to see who can talk fastest 😢
I guess these mtb companys also sells 90 thousand dollar bearings and bushings 😂
Where's the GMBN Racing News Show?
#Captioncontest: GMBN has a new presenter: Jason the Duster and he is going to make sure GCN and GTN are left in the dust
So the English cricket team haven't approached Rich yet? Just saying that's a pretty safe set of hands if you want to get us Aussies out in the Ashes. 😜👍
#captioncontest GMBN introduce their new presenter Beaker who's moved on from the Muppet Show 😁
#CAPTIONCONTEST Rich remembering the days when he had hair.

DMBN Channel soon. 🤣
579 dollars or 620 pounds! So it’s 33% more to buy a Rockshox Domain fork in the UK. British buyers getting gouged!
#captioncontest I don't get it, that's just Owen. 🤷
#caption contest "Beeker, formerly of the Muppet Show, starts his new job at GMBN"
#captioncontest Owen looking *exactly* the same as normal, flashing his peaty's chest tattoo! Seeeeexy!
#CAPTIONCONTEST Owens new haircut really takes off a few pounds, at least now if he needs to clean his bike in the middle of a long ride he can. HAACKS AND BODGES!
I physically cannot access the uploader anymore. You messaged to say its up and running now and sent me a link but I still cannot gain access via any route, be it Facebook or googlemail. It's as if I've been blocked from using it full stop.
Loving Hounds and Beagles
lol…the sport of mtnbiking has become so expensive that promoting budget parts has become a thing….
#captioncontest - All that time at public school came back to haunt Owen
Tom rolled though that news segment way too quick. It was hard to follow.
#captioncontest. Owen’s brush with the Muppets.
£500/600 is a budget fork nowadays😮 now its not.
If I can get a gravel bike instead of getting Sram Transmission. Of course I'm getting another bike instead.
Luv dogs, but not on the trail…is any explanation really needed?
Rich, Hounds and Beagles, how's a dog wearing a back pack like Planet of the Apes 😀
#CAPTIONCONTEST Tough financial times in the biking industry causes GMBN to replace Owen with a Peatys brush, viewers won't even notice the difference.
#captioncontest how kids look when they don't wear helmets
I can't afford anything new in MTB its a rip off for me wish i could
Please end the hounds and beagles!!!! Hack and bodges was so much better!!!
Nice women sunglasses, Neil.....
This video is all over the place , could not make it through all the way. Banter and lack good content ended this video for me
hello
I feel like the show is trying to cram too many segments much too fast into these videos . This isn’t tik tok stop it
I'll be glad when Tic Tok is eliminated to be used in America!
@Magoo71 whether you hate it or not is irrelevant. The fact that they have the audacity to take away our choice to use it or not is the issue here. Each day it seems we have less and less autonomy. In the UK they're banning cigarettes for people born after a certain year. Yeah on the surface that sounds good, healthier people right... no, another choice taken from people. Slippery slope.
@@AndyHyatt1991 it's Chinese spy software, the app shouldn't even exist.
@@AndyHyatt1991 We have plenty enough of misinformation and persuasion...we don't need one second on communist china's influence in this country period....
@@AndyHyatt1991 move to the USA that’s why my ancestors left GB in the first place.
The problem is the budget bike drivetrain stuff is flexy garbage, think shimano Tourney, microshift 26, suntour junk. Sloppy shifting and impossible to repair
I think there are different levels of 'budget' drivetrains. The new ESSA stuff looks to be a distinct step above the stamped steel Tourney crap you find on a lot of very cheap 'bikes', and that $160 price Neil references includes the crankset.
I'm a big fan of options like the M5100 Deore 11 speed, which i just put on two of my sons bikes, and Microshift Advent and Advent X that I run on three of my bikes.
@@chiefsilverbackyeah, hopefully it's solid and doesn't suck
Yes we need Wireless Shifting and Seat Tube dropper.....THERE IS NO QUESTION about it!
I havent seen any reductions at all. Treks recent clearance sale had the fuel exe 9.8 at 12k aud. This was the rrp about 12 months prior.
