I worked on the Kuala Lumper 'SMART' tunnel, now this was originally designed as a flood water relief tunnel so for long periods of time it would stand idle. A contractor bidding the the job suggested using as a traffic tunnel when idle, two decks were incorporated much the same as Seattle's. Signage etc. had to withstand water, escape routes had Submarine type doors to seal them off during flood use. After being used to prevent down town flooding it would take around 14 days to bring it back to traffic use.
A road tunnel under the Suez Canal employed a precast road deck system, this was installed as the tunnel face progressed. The TBM back up gantries then ran on the deck. So there was no delay in waiting for concrete gaining the 28 day strength. Sadly epoxy coated rebar hadnet been invented and the tunnel did suffer rusting rebar, that had to be repaired.
So much progress has been made in tunnel design, TBM use in variable grounds with EPB machines etc. I'm lucky enough to have witnessed many of these methods since I starting in tunneling back in 1960 and retiring in 2015. It's always great to see another project completed safely. THANKS

I can just see hackers getting into the control systems, that wont be very good. I'm reminded of the Tanker truck fire in the Caldecott tunnel in Calif in the 80s

AM/FM override. Cool feature, but virtually useless. I'm sure 4 people will be glad to get the news.

Only two lanes each way? Roads being replaced are three lanes each way.

@@Dog.soldier1950 Do you have a background in tunnel construction? The number of lanes is driven by the tunneling technology. They could have created 2 double height tunnels but for the stretch of road and no exits, it will be fine. There are experts who master in this sort of work for a living.
