    By Monday, you will be able to drive through the new highway 99 tunnel under the Seattle waterfront. But there are places you won't be able to see through your windshield, and that's where we are taking you.

    They should turn part of the underside of the tunnel into a pedestrian or bike bypass. That'd be really cool.

    • @joeylantis22
      @joeylantis22 Před 5 lety +6

      Would be cool, but none of those fire safety things is down there :( They’d have to rebuilt, and they can’t connect to the stuff on the next level because of the curvature of the tunnel.

    • @peter_smyth
      @peter_smyth Před 5 lety +7

      That would be cool, but only useful for people travelling the whole length of the tunnel. It would be better to add a cycle path to the surface, now more space is cleared by moving motor traffic below.

      I mean it would be a neat idea but the idea of putting the road underground was so that there wasn't a freeway blocking access to the coast, creating more sidewalks and bike paths in the process. Opening a bike path in a gloomy tunnel would be counterintuitive

    I drove thru the tunnels in Boston for years. 2 go under the harbor to and from the airport. I don't get why there is such hype about this Seattle tunnel. Are tunnels all that new in the region.

      It's not so much hype for the tunnel itself, it's that with the tunnel in place the Alaskan Way Viaduct can be torn down, which is a big deal.

    So? It’s a tunnel. Must not be common in the northwest.
    I live in an area of Virginia where we have TEN tunnels. On top of that, people here actually WANT them to build more. We had a new span of the Midtown Tunnel open in 2016, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is building a new adjacent tunnel to the existing south one, and VDOT is building a third tunnel for the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel by 2024.
    EDIT: I guess I should clarify we have 5 underwater crossings and 10 tubes.

    How about the toll, that never should be in place since day 1? Or the poorly managed project from the beginning to ourdays, how about a way more serious/heavy traffic tunnel project located in Boston with exits/entriy ramps in the city, not just a stupid 3 mile pipe run north to south and back. People around here must wake up ASAP and be more strict on the wasteful city budget control

    • @zorak950
      @zorak950 Před 5 lety

      You do know what a "bypass" is, right? The tunnel is meant to serve traffic moving through downtown, not as a way to get in and out of downtown.

  • @FWtravels
