    I think what you're missing about the different price tiers is the most obvious one - VALVE IS BEING COOL. that you CAN buy the most inexpensive one and you won't miss out. you won't get a slow piece of crap with cut down features. it's just the storage that you can easily upgrade for cheap and save money - how very pcmasterrace right? it's like games that allow you to spend more money but it won't help you beat others, it's just cosmetics.

    The price difference imo was to encourage tweaking, considering it's simple, Gabe did say he was surprised most sales were from the most expensive model and that will shape how future models are developed. TLDR: Valve's expectation was that people would buy the cheaper one and tweak it.

    Quick tip re Linux. I notice you downloading software from web sites. Usually with Linux this should be a last resort. Installing software via whatever package manager it comes with is preferred as it will mean the software stays updated. In the Steam Deck's case this is the Discover store, which has all the usual stuff like OBS, Discord, Spotify, Heroic, emulators etc.

    The ultimate value of the Deck is the fact that anyone who already has a big Steam library and wants a handheld can just carry it over. Imagine having to rebuy all those games on Switch, they'll be more expensive than on Steam, you'll get an inferior version (or even just cloud) or they might not even exist on the Switch.
    I just sold some CSGO skins and got it "for free" so it was a no brainer for me. But if I were in the market for a Switch and saw the Deck releasing, I'd definitely pay the extra because I'd save a ton on games and get better performance with all the advantages that come with it being a PC.

    I like your video it was pretty good and i can see your point. However there are a few things i have to disagree with you.
    First is the point about the 649$ version of the deck. The biggest model of the steam deck costs 679€ from where i live. A 512GB M.2 2230 PCIe 3 x2 costs about 80€ish. A new Anti Glare Screen from ifixit costs about 95€ so if you get the cheapest steam deck model that costs 419€ you'll end up with 594€ leaving you with 84€ to spare. Now these 84€ are price you pay for the convenience of not having to put this in all by yourself. For you it might be easy to replace the storage and the screen but there is a sizeable amount of people who just aren't comfortable with opening their device and performing such upgrades. Plus you get a nicer case and some goodies for your profile which i know are easy to ignore but i wanted to mention them since they are a part of this too. So having a 84€ convenience fee is something that needs to be decided on a per person basis. However its is now as outlandish as you make it out to be.
    Second point that i didn't like is at 2:52 the point you make there is a straw-man argument you may heard it from some hardcore fanboys but it isn't a popular opinion in the community.
    The last point is at 11:38 i do agree with you that the steam deck is unfinished but these seem more like growing pains rather then major problems and i am optimistic that 95% of these issues are able to be fixed with software patches and Valve showed us clearly that they will be working on them and constantly improving the deck at least for the foreseeable future

    • @BulletBarry
      @BulletBarry  Před 2 lety +9

      I definitely see your points on all of these. I was technically correct with the first one but you're right. I come from a computer hardware background so for me it's easier to ignore the little goodies and fix up my deck, i actually prefer that in a product but most people would not.
      I also think the steam deck will be ironed out in no time! The thing updates all the time so valve is paying close attention to it and those who bought it!

      Everything is person to person - Steam Deck

    • @cunt5413
      @cunt5413 Před 2 lety +1

      The first point depends on how good of a deal are you able to get for the storage. I went from the 64 GB to 256 GB SSD and 256 GB SD card for around 50€ which saved me like 80 € compared to the 256 GB and 210€ to the 512 GB. And because it takes just a minute to swap the SSD even the 80 € saving is a no-brainer for me. Plus you can just get an anti-glare screen protector instead of the whole screen which is like 10 bucks.

    • @GamingEnding
      @GamingEnding Před 2 lety

      @@cunt5413 Of course, when you get a good deal then its even better but like i said a lot of people don't like opening their device and the problem with SD cards is, while they're good now and just a little bit slower then a NVME SSD i can see this gap becoming only wider as games use faster ssd technology. Not to mention that the 64 GB model doesn't have a nvme ssd but a eMMC which is basically the same as an SD Card and i think a screen protector might even be better then a new screen since its easier to replace then a screen if you don't like the matte finish

Demanding games are like 3 hours while most I've played are 4 to 5 hours. I like the controls a lot. For Fear 1 and Fear Extraction Point I binded L1 for slide and R1 to jump kick. The bottom paddles are leaning and the left touchpad is a radial menu for the grenades and gadgets. I really like how much you can config the controls to your liking. Jokes aside, I really don't think there will be a second revision release anytime soon. First, Valve have put a lot of money into the R&D for this device and are selling each unit at a loss. So they'll keep making and selling these until the economy of scale reaches the point of profitability. Second, the hardware is already capable enough. Sure, there are minor issues here and there, as you mentioned, but the raw power of this machine at this moment doesn't require any tiny improvements. I guess Valve will hold off releasing a second revision until a significant performance boost is achievable (maybe 3 years down the line if competition between Intel and AMD stays the same). I'd say tech-savvy people who trust their repairability skills will be fine using the current machine. Other people? They probably couldn't care less about the small problems these machines have.

    I think they were banking on the uncertainty of how easy/difficult it was going to be to swap in a larger m.2. We only knew that every one would have a m.2 socket but not how difficult it'd be to swap one in. So they probably capitalized on charging more for higher storage so that they didn't need to offer anything more.

    I don't think the 64 and 256GB versions are a mistake, except for triple A games, the vast majority of games take minimal space, and if you want an emulator machine the 64Gb is perfect, the highest you are gonna see a game going is 4GB or so (if you enter PS3 and WiiU, Switch emulation territory it will be much higher though, everything before that is limited to CD/DVD capacity, so from 700MB to 4.2GB), many older PC games barely take up any space, and indie games don't take that much space either, i personally reserved the 256GB model, thinking on getting a 256GB SD card (maybe a 512GB if i see a good one on sale), but for a machine that i know i wount be using for heavy games that take 30GB+, just because the standar in AAA games is "F the user, why we would optimize our game so that it uses less resources and takes up half the space, when the user can just buy a 1TB HDD for 46€" doesn't mean that the 64 or the 256gb models are useles because "oh, they can't fit the new CoD in there".
    Basically, if you know the games you will be playing in the steam deck, and realize that there is no need to get the 512GB, then you just don't need to buy the 512Gb version, i think that more options are better for the user.
    Regarding the software issues, we've seen many of them already being fixed, compared to nintendo where every 3~5 rows of games in the eshop the entire system freezes for a couple of seconds since the console came out and i still haven't seen a fix, valve is fixing and patching his shit, so they are already doing more than nintendo in terms of software and that's promising, oh, and i don't have to get a 150€ modchip to be able to change THE FUCKING MENU THEME, thank you nintendo, you can now go and F yourself.

Built my computer about 5 years ago and was playing on prebuilts before that.
      For your other point, the battery life is a genuine thing to bring up in a review. Especially since the console was dying when it was still at 90%. That is a major flaw for a handheld since the primary point of a handheld is not always being attached to a cord.
      I can somewhat agree that asking for more powerful hardware is a bit of a lackluster complaint; however, that was a very minuet point in the video. It wasn't like he claimed it was an absolute deal breaker for the device.

    while I get the fan boy mentality of the success of this, it's not fully just that if you think about valve and its other products. I see this more as the new way of small formfactor handheld computer lite consoles. meaning that if this success then other bigger companies will follow suit. it kinda happened already with things like the steam link and the steam controller. Now there's Xbox game pass, NVidia shield and full controller support just through the PC now. remember how you needed third party software or third party controllers made for PC. before the major update to the Xbox controllers? You can kind of thank valve in a way for that. but if it's not for you it's not for you. I personally love it cause my old gaming laptop while good is now showing its 4 year old age which might not sound like a lot but it ran slow had a ton of junk and some internal stuff had to be repaired and it still isn't doing well. but seeing as how I ran it nonstop a lot with a vr setup that pushed it hardcore it makes sense. while this may not be for everyone this is a BIG step for Linux gaming and people are already seeing it pay off.

It was just a moneygrab option for Valve to put out a 512gb version. Banking on the fact that people would say "512gb is better than 64gb". Everything about the device is the same except storage and matte screen on 512gb version. Gameplay is no different........... So you can pay $400 plus tax and another $135 for a 1tb microSD and still be about $100 in the black with the option, should you choose, to swap the hd out.......

Normally I would think it to be anti-consumer, but we know that in the end it's really a choice and they give you the option to replace the storage, and valve even shared a video on youtube on how to replace the storage making it easy for consumers to choose to do the work or don't. Secondly, the steam deck isn't the first product in this space. The GPD win three and max, the Aya Neo and Onexplayer, several of which. Valve, on the other hand, has the most compelling offer; however, each offers its strengths and weaknesses. Also, the valve is the only one using a distribution of Linux. All the other ones run Windows; I sincerely hope the steam deck does well, which could potentially break the Monopoly that Windows has.

It's arch linux and you can choose the same desktop environment that the deck has (KDE) if you want, but KDE has some issues when using multiple monitors of different models, so gnome, cinnamon or something else might make more sense in that case. It's also arguably the best gaming oriented no-setup linux distribution and has helpful graphical interfaces for most things you would normally have to do from terminal. It even has a feature like time machine called snapper and you can run it off of a portable ssd if you want.

The main issues can be solved through garuda assistant and installing packages even can be done through an app store, although i'm still a bit confused why garuda dragonized KDE uses both flatpak and AUR and how they relate to eachother. The problems on like ubuntu are that you can frequently get bugs that are near impossible to solve and are only possible to fix because there are forums where some wizard has done it like 3 years earlier.
